Cozy Cabin Hideaway | Minutes to Blue Ridge Parkway
The McCormick Cabin at Osceola Mill A Historic Creekside Retreat on the Blue Ridge
Some places are just a place to sleep. This is not one of those places.
The McCormick Cabin was built in 1873 on the grounds of Osceola Mill - one of only two surviving mills from the seven that once powered life along Marl Creek in Virginia's Shenandoah Valley. The other is the McCormick Farm Mill, part of the same original McCormick Estate that revolutionized American agriculture. You're not just staying somewhere scenic. You're staying somewhere that shaped history. The cabin's centerpiece is a massive stone fireplace - original to the 1873 structure - with the historic mill grinding stone inlaid into its exterior. It's the kind of detail that stops you mid-sentence. Beside it sits a private soaking tub, because some contrasts are worth leaning into: 150 years of working history, and a long, unhurried soak while the fire crackles beside you.
The Cabin At 464 square feet, this is a cozy, intentional space - designed for two people who want to be present with each other and the landscape around them. A king-size bed, full-size pull-out sofa, and open living area give you comfort without clutter. The full private bathroom with standing shower handles the practicalities. A mini-fridge, microwave, coffee, tea, bottled water, linens, and toiletries mean you arrive and settle in - nothing more to think about.
Step onto the porch and you're immediately above Marl Creek. Pull up an Adirondack chair at the fire pit, light a fire, and let the sound of the water take over. Evenings here tend to stretch longer than planned.
The Property Osceola Mill has been welcoming guests for nearly 50 years. Named after Seminole leader Chief Osceola, the mill still stands anchored by its massive hand-hewn chestnut beams and a steel Fitz water wheel - a later replacement for the original wooden one - that still turns heads today even though it no longer grinds grain. The Brubaker family ran the mill for decades until Hurricane Camille's 1969 floods ended the milling era. Rather than fade into history, the property reinvented itself - first as a home, then as the historic inn and retreat it is today.
The whole property sits at 352 Tye River Turnpike in Vesuvius, Virginia, cradled in the Blue Ridge Mountains with the Blue Ridge Parkway just minutes away.
Your Blue Ridge Basecamp The cabin sits right along Tye River Turnpike - easy to find, easy to reach - with the Blue Ridge Parkway practically at the end of the drive. World-class hiking, cycling, and some of the most scenic open road in America are all within minutes. You should know the cabin is close to the road and you may hear passing traffic during the day. Most guests tell us that by the time the fire pit is going and Marl Creek settles into the background, the road becomes the last thing on their mind. Come for the mountains. Stay for the history. Leave a little more restored than when you arrived.
The McCormick Cabin is a self-contained, private retreat. No B&B services are included with this listing.

Complimentary lite breakfast food, coffee bar, and snacks Complimentary Starlink WiFi-fast enough to stream, but slow enough to remind you to go outside. Hôte : Linda Schatz
Meet Your Hosts - The Folks Behind the Mill
Linda Schatz founded At Ease Retreat Corporation after decades in design and real estate, and a lifetime of dreaming about a place like this. Originally from Hawaii, Linda brought the warmth of island hospitality to the hills of Vesuvius, Virginia, and teamed up with her son, Tyler, to create something heartfelt, creative, and refreshingly down-to-earth.
They didn't want to build a resort-they wanted to build a place that felt like home. A place for gathering, creating, laughing, healing, and staying a while.
Voici pourquoi l’hôte a choisi cet hébergement
Meet the Family Behind Osceola Mill At Ease Retreat Corporation is the heartbeat of Osceola Mill, and at the center of it all is Linda Schatz-a woman who knows a thing or two about hospitality.
Originally from Hawaii, Linda grew up in a culture where family, gathering, and making guests feel at home were a way of life. That warm, welcoming spirit is something she has brought to Osceola Mill, shaping it into a place where visitors can unwind, unplug, and feel completely at ease.
Before running the Mill, Linda spent 27 years in real estate development, working on everything from apartments and retail spaces to master-planned communities. After falling in love with rural Virginia, she knew she wanted to create a space that felt comfortable, unpretentious, and deeply connected to the land-a true home away from home.
Voici ce qui rend cet hébergement unique
Back in the 1800s, water-powered mills were the heartbeat of the Shenandoah Valley. Osceola Mill was one of seven mills along Marl Creek, once a bustling network that fed local farms and families. Today, only two are still standing-McCormick Farm Mill upstream, and Osceola right here at the bottom of the creek. Both were part of the larger McCormick estate, rooted deep in Virginia history. Osceola Mill spent over 120 hardworking years grinding flour and cornmeal for the local community. Built in 1849, it was crafted with massive hand-hewn beams made of now-extinct American Chestnut, and it's still standing strong thanks to the quality and care put in by generations past. The iron Fritz water wheel you see outside replaced the original wooden one and still stands as a striking piece of mill history-though it's no longer turning, it's a powerful visual reminder of the Mill's working days. In the 1900s, the Brubaker family kept the mill going, producing stone-ground goods until Hurricane Camille swept through in 1969 and brought the operation to a close. But the story didn't end there. Instead of fading into history, the Mill was lovingly restored-first into a private residence, then a country inn-and it's been welcoming guests from around the world for nearly 50 years ever since.
Today, Osceola Mill still carries the spirit of its working past. You'll find original mill parts scattered throughout the property, a tribute to the hands that built and ran this place. The Millhouse next door now holds four unique guest suites on the second floor-each with its own charm, a private bathroom, and a blend of old-world character and modern comfort. Just a few steps away, tucked beside the creek, is our McCormick Cabin-a freestanding, pet-friendly getaway with vintage vibes, perfect for families, couples, or anyone who prefers to stay close to the ground.
