Hi Anne, we’re sorry you found furniture uncomfortable for older folks (but like the beds, as do we). I think we may have erred more in the “match” direction than the “comfortable” direction. :) Since we have so much nice furniture in storage that we find comfortable, we will think about which ones might feel best to older folks and switch things around. While we love hearing that you had a wonderful stay, we have to admit that your critique of the condition of the house is fair. This past year was supposed to feature a renovation, but we never had a break in residency so it got pushed to next year. The architect is drawing up plans as we speak. We’re glad you were actively engaged with the yard and surrounding area, and agree that the interior could use some sprucing up. Stay tuned. :)

We’re delighted you loved the charm of our house and have politely shamed us into making sure our cleaner remembers to clean the blinds! I agree with you about the outdoor shower - it wouldn’t be Oceana without it. :)

This was a concerning rental – seemingly on both sides. Deeply concerned about the enjoyment of our guests, a number of which return annually, we take this critical feedback very seriously. This was our first rental of the season….and unusual. People are urged to introduce themselves after making the booking; since this guest did not, we reached out. We sent multiple greetings and additional information regarding the property and Little Compton – with no reply. There was silence prior to the renter’s arrival. Nonetheless guest raises some legitimate issues. The rental was Thursday-to-Thursday, rather than the usual Saturday-Saturday rental, requiring different cleaners with whom we were unfamiliar; the stove and some other places could have been cleaned better. A huge storm did make the bottom portion of the stairs to the water, on our neighbor’s property but shared with us, unusable. We had anticipated the stairs would be repaired by the rental date; they were not, so when our renter raised the issue, we agreed on a partial refund. She also sent photos of a number of concerns, including mold on a shower liner. Concerned about the issues, I agreed to drive to the house, meet, replace the curtain, and address the other issues of concern. When I arrived, approximately 1½ hours later from Boston, the guests had left for the afternoon – without informing me of their intent to be elsewhere. I attended to as much as I was able to identify from the photos. The issue of the mold is the most serious. The “black filth” on the couch arms resulted from Velcro that we used to hold the covers that we had intended to protect the arms of couches. But the possibility of mold, and because we’ve been intending to do this anyway, we are removing the old slip covers, replacing them with new covers. In the end, we refunded our full payment from VRBO to the guest.

We appreciate your detailed assessment of your stay at Oceana. While it’s obviously discouraging to hear anything but delight from our guests, critiques are always helpful for us. A number of the items – the pillows, utensils, curtains in the shower, and others – we will address immediately. Your account of the mold is concerning. Four rooms in the house are equipped with AC. We also have a dehumidifier that controls moisture under the house. It’s been a particularly wet July, and perhaps that along with the oceanfront setting has created a perfect storm for mold. Still, your point about the bathroom floor and the fabric on one or more couches needs attention. We are actually on a backlogged list for a contractor to replace the bathroom floor that you mention. Your comments have also enabled us to think of other improvements. Thanks for your input!
