A comfortable, self-contained suite in a restored 19th-century vila (RRAL 980)

Comfortable, modern suite on the ground floor of a completely restored 19th-century villa in rural São Miguel, Azores. The suite features a large bedroom and a fire place in the living room.

At the base of the Sete Cidades volcano and on the edge of the town of Capelas, Vila Alegre is only a short drive from north and south coast beaches, as well as the island's main city, Ponta Delgada. Once our family’s summer home, Vila Alegre has been completely renovated. It was our dream to blend the form and character of a traditional Azorean country home with modern comforts.

Enjoy carefully restored antique furniture as well as a new mattresses and sofas. With our wonderful temperate climate, a wood burning fireplace and electric heaters warms the suite during winter stays; thick stone walls and tile keep the suite cool in the summer. With respect to sound, the suite is extremely well insulated, with concrete between floors guaranteeing privacy and eliminating the sound bleed between the suites. The suites includes WIFI, cable TV in various languages, as well as secure parking within the traditional stone walls of the property

Enjoy easy walks to local shops, country lanes and full access to the property's serene gardens. At Vila Alegre, our beautiful gardens, walkways, benches and gazebo are all around you. Enjoy our covered outdoor barbecue patio and many spaces in the gardens for relaxation, contemplation, or play.

At Vila Alegre we welcome people from all around the world and all walks of life. Whether you're looking for a romantic weekend getaway, a longer stay in the country, or a relaxing family vacation, Vila Alegre is a spectacular, one-of-a-kind home base for your stay in São Miguel. Public transport passes directly in front of Vila Alegre for the short ride south into Ponta Delgada or north into Capelas.

Our suite is ideal for couples, individuals, or small families. A crib and/or cot is available upon request.

Aside from a comfortable and elegant home, Antonio was the most wonderful host ever! I took a fall and broke my wrist early in our trip. He took us to the hospital, heled us get prescriptions filled, built a fire, and checked on us daily! Extraordinary hospitality!!

We stayed at Vila Alegre with Antonio for 17 nights in February 2026. From the moment we arrived we were treated to Antonio’s gracious hospitality. He went out of his way to make us feel at home by supplying us with many delicious treats from the island including bread, fresh eggs from his chicken, fruits from his gardens as well as cheeses and jams. The accommodations were bright, clean, private and the surrounding gardens filled with tropical trees and flowers felt like paradise. During our stay he checked in with us regularly to make sure we had what we needed (and to drop off more fresh eggs!). The vila is just a short distance from the airport and downtown Ponta Delgada and an easy drive to all the beautiful sites that Sao Miguel has to offer. The bed was very comfortable and we loved waking up to the sound of mooing cows and singing birds in the distance. We also really appreciated his flexibility with early check in and late check out. We were sorry to have to say goodbye!

The owner greeted us and happily answered any questions. The location is 15 minutes from the airport and centrally on the island so we easily drove to all points of interest. The décor was fascinating antiques and modern kitchen appliances. The yard is a large magical garden with fruit trees and chickens. We loved it.

Amazing Stay with Antonio!

Everything about our stay was great. Antonio had flawless pre arrival communication, allowed us an early checkin (which was much appreciated after an overnight flight) and welcome light breakfast was extremely hospitable. The property itself was as advertised and perfect for three active people. The setting and all the amazing gardens that are so well loved allowed for a peaceful and tranquil setting each day. Highly recommend this amazing property to all.

Perfect getaway oasis

Beautiful place!

Antonio was so welcoming and gave us tons of tips on where to go in the Azores. The property had everything we needed from washer to dishwasher and he had left us local food to try after the long plane ride. The location was in a small town but we easily drove to destinations all over the island. And the garden is beautiful!

Beautiful island and accommodation

Wonderful stay at Antonio’s. He is so kind and caring! We loved his flat with morning chickens coming to greet us at our door! Lots of room in the flat and it is full of charm and authenticity.Antonio's is close to all of the islands attractions! Hope to return again some day!

Remarkable Refuge!

We were more than happy to have discovered Vila Alegre in the countryside outside of Ponta Delgada. It was beautiful, peaceful, and an amazing place to have been our home base for 5 days in Sao Miguel. Antonio was extremely helpful, knowledgeable, and willing to answer questions to help guide our itinerary while there. We can't say enough good things about our experience there, and we definitely plan to return!

The beautiful Vila Alegre

A charming homey stay in a restored vila. The gardens are endless and lush, planted and lovingly cared for by Antonio. This was our refuge after 2 weeks of travel in urban Portugal. It refreshed us, body and soul. Will come back!

Beautiful villa on spectacular grounds

The property is the first floor of a restored villa on utterly amazing grounds. We loved the glassed in porch off the bedroom, which gave us a beautiful view of the gardens. The house has everything you need, including a full kitchen. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay here and recommend it highly.

Wonderful experience great place!

My family loved our stay! Antonio and Maggie were the best hosts. Great reception with fruit and other goodies upon arrival. Their knowledge of the island provided great recommendations for us. Paradise in Capelas

Vila Alegre was an absolute dream! Beautiful home w/ gorgeous gardens and a very kind host who is flexible and accommodating. All the comforts of home with beautifully curated antique furnishings made the home feel as special as it is. The ideal picture of a Portuguese Vila! We enjoyed staying here so much and was the perfect home base for all of our Sao Miguel adventures. Can't wait to return!

Loved every minute of our stay!

From the moment we arrived and Antonio greeted us, it was perfect! He was such a kind man and we loved hearing about the gardens and enjoyed spending time sitting on the sun porch overlooking the beautiful property. The local foods he provided were delicious and were very much appreciated until we could get to a store. The apartment was spacious and immaculate…and decorated beautifully. Location couldn’t be better to get anywhere on the island. Thank you for a fantastic vacation and we hope to be able to return soon!

Incredible garden oasis

Antonio was the perfect host- so very friendly- as (are all the islanders,) advising us in places to go and where to eat. Plus a lovely welcome pack of food all produced on the island. Beautiful gardens and lovely to sit relaxing in the sun lounge after a great day out ,watching and listening to the birds . Would recommend this small Azorean haven to all!

Charming place within its own botanical garden!

The perfect place to relax and to discover this wonderful island! The apartment is spacious, comfortable, well-equipped and very peaceful. We enjoyed the inside (especially the wonderful wintergarden) as well as the outside (you feel like you are in a botanical garden!) very much ... also on rainy days! The owner Antonio - who lives upstairs - is lovely, very helpful and was very considerate and respectful of our privaty. The communication was always perfect and we were even surprised by a wonderful welcome package as well as fresh eggs during the week! The location in the middle of the island is perfect to explore the island. Free parking is available directly in front of the house. Grocery stores are available in the little city. A wonderful place which we can recommend and would love to come back to!

Wonderful Home

Antonio’s home was perfect in every way. The location was easy to drive to all parts of Sao Miguel. The apartment was larger than the photos show and fully equipped for all needs. Antonio was helpful, gracious and easy to contact if we had any questions. He greeted us with flowers from his beautiful garden and food from the Azores. I especially loved sitting in the sun room every morning with my coffee. Highly recommend!!
