Above Braithwaite, the remains of Force Crag Mine – the last mineral mine to be worked in the Lake District – have been lovingly restored, while 2 miles away, Whinlatter Forest offers lots of opportunity for walking and mountain biking, with play areas and tree-top adventure Go Ape for thrill-seekers. Ensuring an effortless self-catering stay, Braithwaite has a convenience store plus a choice of friendly pubs and other eateries, while the bustling market town of Keswick – home of the Cumberland Pencil Museum – sits at the top of Derwentwater, just 2 miles east. At the southern end of the lake, Borrowdale (9 miles) is a must-see. For contrast, head to Georgian Cockermouth (11 miles), a gateway between the western lakes and the Solway Coast. With a friendly shop just metres away and fabulous fell views from the doorstep, this pretty property puts you at the heart of village life.


Just inside the front door, the vestibule has space for boots and coats before you head further in, where a welcoming lounge/diner awaits. Stretch out on a comfortable L-shaped sofa or curl up in an armchair for a chilled-out evening in front of the TV. The wood burner will give a warming glow after dark, while table lamps add to the ambiance.
