CRICH
(1.8 miles)
Home of the Crich Tramway Village and Crich Stand, the clifftop memorial to the Worcesteshire and Sherwood Foresters Regiment this pretty little village was also the setting for fictional village of Cardale which featured in the popular TV series 'Peak Practice'.
Visitors to the Tramway Village can ride on one of the world renowned vintage trams through a unique period street and out into the open countryside for spectacular views and explore fascinating exhibitions or even watch as trams are restored from the Workshop Viewing Gallery.
MATLOCK & MATLOCK BATH
(5,6 miles)
Two of the most popular places to visit in Derbyshire, occupying a beautiful position in a limestone valley.
There are plenty of things to do in Matlock. In the heart of Matlock sits Hall Leys Park with its boating lake, riverside walks and tennis courts. In Matlock town centre there are pretty streets full of small, independent shops, and a host of cafés, pubs and restaurants in which to relax.
Just a mile and a half to the south, Matlock Bath is a lively town that was developed as one of England’s first true tourist destinations, with a long high street lined with quirky shops, cafés, amusement arcades and visitor attractions, as well as peaceful paths for shady strolls alongside the River Derwent. A popular destination for families, bikers and fun seekers, there are plenty of things to do and see in Matlock Bath.
Take a cable car flight to the Heights of Abraham, a historic 60-acre hilltop estate, and enjoy cavern tours, exhibitions, adventure playgrounds and much more, plus regular special events throughout the year.
The Matlock Bath Illuminations are a popular feature from September to the end of October, when the riverside is decorated and the cliffs floodlit to create a magical scene of colour. At weekends during the Illuminations there are parades of decorated boats, entertainments and, on certain dates, firework displays.
CROMFORD
(5.1 miles)
The lovely village of Cromford is perhaps best known for its connection with the renowned industrialist Richard Arkwright, who built Cromford Mills in 1771.
There are some great walks starting in Cromford, especially along the canal from Cromford Wharf to High Peak Junction, where there is a Visitor Centre, Lea Wood Pumping Station and the start of the High Peak Trail. Black Rocks with its' picnic site and craggy tors are also high up above the village.
BAKEWELL
(13 miles)
Idyllically situated on the banks of the river Wye, Bakewell is the biggest town in the Peak District National Park. With mellow stone buildings, a medieval five-arched stone bridge and quaint courtyards, it's a magnet for painters, photographers and sightseers alike. Catch the colour of Bakewell Carnival Week and Well Dressing in July or Bakewell Show, one of the oldest agricultural events in the country, in August.
Legend has it that the town's famous Bakewell Pudding was created by mistake by a local cook in the mid-19th century. Today her delectable 'jam tart that went wrong' can be sampled at various bakeries and cafés and posted virtually anywhere in the world!
CHATSWORTH
(12 miles)
Chatsworth is a place to learn, explore and create in the heart of the Peak District National Park. It comprises a Grade I listed house and stables, a 105-acre garden, a farmyard and adventure playground, and more than 1800 acres of parkland and historic woodland that is free to access and enjoy all year round.
There are more than 25 rooms to explore in the house, including the Painted Hall, Chapel, Sculpture Gallery and State Rooms.
