We were hoping to stay there for a week for our anniversary. We got there late around 11pm and unloaded all of our gear. The place seemed clean and nice at first glance. We liked that it had an enclosed back porch so we could hang out with our pups back there while listening to the babbling creek. Sure, it overlooks the gas station too, but that's something that you can ignore with the trees. We also liked that it had two bathrooms.
First red flag: the kitchen had about 10 roach traps placed around the countertops and in the kitchen cabinets. I knew something was up.
First roach I saw walked out from the microwave on the countertop (completely ignoring the roach traps). I told my husband who came and killed it because cockroaches give me the creeps. Then, he went upstairs to go to sleep when he called out that he just killed a roach on our bed. I went up to see where he found it and it was on my pillow... great! We heard sounds from the kitchen so I went down to see if maybe it was one of our dogs, but they were both in bed. I turned on my flashlight so I could make my way to the kitchen when I see a few scatter in the living room. And, by the time I made it into the kitchen 3 were just hanging out in the sink where we had washed our dog's food bowls which I can only assume they were enjoying any remnants of their food we had left behind. My husband of course killed all the ones that we saw which we counted 7 total. Knowing that we saw 7 cockroaches, we could only imagine how many were lying in wait in the walls. We barely slept that night even though we were exhausted from driving 10 hours to get there. I messaged the host to let her know what was going on, and her response was that she would send out Orkin to spray outside of the cabin and that she would give us spray for the inside. At first, I thought maybe that would help, but then we saw more even when we got up at 8am and decided to pack up and leave. I told her what we decided to do and would appreciate a partial refund for nights not stayed. She said she could not give us a refund if we left early which makes no sense to me if the place you are hosting is infested with cockroaches! I have continuously called VRBO about this and will continue to do so until I get my money back. Going out of town and spending over $1K to rent a cabin just to leave after one night is not some secret plan of ours to ruin your business lady! Treat your renters fairly and give refunds when they are due!
