Even better than expected

Our stay exceeded expectations. Unbeatable location is an understatement. The beach was incredible. The house was clean and well stocked. Everything functioned perfectly. The staff was attentive and cordial. We felt safe. Host was accomodating to questions and requests. The house dog was a heartwarming touch. Already contemplating a second stay.

Even better than the first time!

We stayed at Villa Olivia 17 years ago as a single family and it was paradise! Our second visit as a multi family was even better! The pool and AC in the kitchen/living room made our 7 days vacation perfect. All personnel was amazing, like the last time, very attentive to our grand kids and they were always telling us know when the German bakery truck was coming by. We had amazing waves for surfing and as usual spectacular sunsets! We dream to return again... Thank you to the Gordon family for sharing this beautiful house with us!

Gorgeous sunsets

Great location right on the beach. Leanna and Kimberly were amazing hosts and so responsive to our needs. We were surprised that room cleaning and towel replacement was another 20 each cleaning but it was easy to simply decline that service. No TP in toilets so you must throw dirty TP in the garbage cans which means a cleaning is needed every few days. Def recommend having groceries stocked for you. . throw

Perfect beach vacation

We loved our stay at Villa Olivia!! The beachfront location, very comfortable rooms set up for couples and singles, wonderful staff for cleaning/cooking/security/maintenance, close proximity to walk to restaurants and shops in beautiful Playa Grande, all made for an outstanding time with friends.

Perfect place to vacation

We absolutely loved staying at Villa Olivia. We loved that it was a little secluded but also had great places to eat in walking distance. We loved the staff and the cooks were AMAZING! They were welcoming and friendly. Also one of our favorites was the watchdog who we loved on each day and she would stay right with us. For our first time out of the country(other than a cruise) this exceeded our expectations. We would definitely rent again. It has everything u could need. Thank you for making our stay wonderful.

Amazing Relaxing Private House

Super awesome stay. House was great. AC and private bathrooms with showers in each room were key for the family we had in the house (10 total). Kimberley the housekeeper has a service where she'll cook meals for the household and they were soooooo good. Highly recommend having her make a few meals for your stay. Area was safe, private and relaxing. Easy to get to and exceeded all expectations.

Big Family Reunion

This property was ideal for our family reunion. We were able to rent this house and the property next door through the same owner and it was great! The staff was great and attended to our needs. The location was great and we love the house being right in the beach with easy access. The area was quiet. We would stay here again.

Amazing

We had the absolute best time at Villa Olivia. We had a group of friends for a 40th birthday trip and we all enjoyed our time here. The beach is incredible and morning walks are just beautiful. The sunsets from even the back patio are incredible, less yet out on the beach. We rented surf boards for surging and had a blast. We lounged in the pool after coming in from excursions. Restaurants were just a short walk down the road or the beach, so we took advantage of those. Kimberley cooked dinner for us one night and breakfast one morning and it was so delicious- everyone in our group was so impressed! The watchdog Morena was such a joy to have around, you can tell she is well loved by everyone! Can’t wait to bring my kids with us here next time, they will love this place as much as we did.

Loved our stay, Julie and the staff were amazing

House is a touch dated, but amazing layout, tons of room!!! The rap around decks were out standing!!! Jeffery, Kimberly,Jose and the rest where awesome. Kitchen and BBQ area where great as well, kitchen has AC!!! THE VIEW AND LOCATION ARE ALL!!! TIME!!!!

FABULOUS! FABULOUS! FABULOUS!

We waited an extra year (like everyone else because of the pandemic) to take this trip, and it was well worth the wait! We were 8 adults, and there was plenty of room for us, everyone had privacy, it was so great to have the beach so close for those who love the beach. We had Kimberly cook a few meals for us, and they were all delicious. We wanted to bring her home to cook for us! She was also so helpful with whatever small problems we had. Everyone we came in contact with during our visit was friendly and helpful. We used YouAreCostaRica for a couple of tours, and Mariana was the best to work with! I highly recommend using them if you are in the area. If I never take another vacation I will never regret taking this one, and I would definitely come back here again!

Our first impression of the villa was a little dated and in need of some updating.

We had on amazing stay at villa Olivia !! The staff always very helpful and chef Kimberly made us 2 fantastic meals that satisfied even the fussiest eaters. We are Costa Rica supplied us with the surf boards rentals for the week and were very helpful in guiding us through playa grande. The only communication I had with the manager was through email. She was not available to us throughout our stay. The villa was quite tired looking but the location on the of the ocean was pure paradise which made up for it . We did not rent a car for our stay but had a driver for most of our transportation for excursions and to tamarindo. The walk to the water taxi is much further then described in other reviews. The locals are very friendly and always willing to help you out.

Amazing Ocean Stay!!

Our family of 11 enjoyed our week long stay at Villa Olivia! The ocean views from the house are amazing and we watched the incredible sunsets nightly. Someone from our family walked to the close by tide pools daily where they saw lots of hermit crabs and even a couple of octopuses!! The house managers, Leeana and Elizabit, were very responsive to any questions we had and requests for help. We really appreciated Kimberly shopping so that we had groceries in the house when we arrived. As our flight was late and we didn’t get in until 8pm our first day, we were especially thankful that we’d had groceries delivered. Kimberly was knowledgeable about buying gluten free food for our family members who have Celiac. Kimberly and the staff at the house, kept the grounds clean, cleaned our bedrooms every other day or so, cleared away our trash and recycling every evening and kept the place secure all night. Each of the five bedrooms had bathrooms attached to them. All except one bedroom is only accessed through an outside courtyard. So perhaps this wouldn’t be a good house for younger children as they would be wandering outside to get to their parent’s bedroom.The main living area inside is not huge for eleven people, but the plentiful outside tables and chairs accommodated us just fine. The smallish pool was great for cooling off if you didn’t want to be in the ocean and has some great seats on one side from where you can see some of the ocean. We all loved our visit!!!

Amazing location, property needs a lot of work

It's hard to be critical of a property in the middle of paradise. The location alone is beyond 5 stars. But, if we had known the following, we would not have rented this property: All rooms are accessible via outside entrances- with the exception of a small room off the family room and none of them are connected to one another. This makes sense for groups of adults but does not make sense if you like for your young children to be close to you. The pool is the size of a large hot tub The "countryside view" studio is in bad shape. It has potential if a)it was cleaned properly b) it didn't consist of the world's oldest, mustiest futons and decrepit day bed c) the "view" consisted of something other than a side yard littered with debris and junk d)the torn, stained sheets were replaced. The house was swept one time while we were there. No sheets or towels were ever changed which was problematic since the washer and dryer are not accessible to the guests (have to pay to have someone else mix your whites with your darks) The kitchen needs a major update-stove and dishwasher barely work, dishes and silverware are all chipped and old, pots and pans are old and worn and stacked in a jumbled mess under the counter. We found black mold growing on the inside of the water cooler spout. With a few renovations and updates, this house could truly be amazing.

We Expected a Lot and Villa Olivia Delivered

Villia Olivia was the first choice of houses available to our group of 8. The pictures do a wonderful job of giving you the layout of the house, and the beautiful surroundings. We were a group of friends that travel together every year, so we've set the bar pretty high. After this stay, we have set it even higher. You won't find yourself wanting much at this property. Each bedroom is exactly as advertised, and more spacious than expected. The beach is just steps from the back door as is the plunge pool. Each bedroom is accessed from the interior courtyard, perfectly private and air conditioned. We found the kitchen well stocked with the appliances and cookware you need to do your own cooking, but Kimberly cooked for us on two occasions and made two great meals. The staff is very friendly, and helpful, from keeping the property clean and well manicured, to notifying us when our driver was there to take us over to Tamarindo for dinner. I don't believe you could find a better group of people to look after you for the week. Playa Grande is a quiet surfing community. Don't expect a bunch of touristy shops and stores, for that you'll need to catch a ride or drive over to Tamarindo. But for the laid back, peaceful vacation we were looking for, Playa Grande can't be beat. We took walks on the beach, ate at Taco Star and RipJack Inn, took surf lessons from Frijoles Locos, and spent more than one day in the sun on the gorgeous beach. And if you want a sunset, Playa Grande can't be beat. I can't sing the praises of Julie's house, and Marianela, Kimberly and the rest of the crew enough. It was near perfect.

Gorgeous property

The house was nice, but there were some things that should be noted. I would mention that having a car is a necessity if you plan on leaving the house at all. It’s a lovely area, but definitely secluded. The "5 minute walk" to food and "the village" is if you are fit enough to walk the beach or dirt road and the heat isn't knocking you down. $75 round trip to get 5-6 people to Tamarindo added up. $100 to get fro Liberia airport. In the master bedroom, the a/c was overflowing/leaking but still works - messy. We had one room swarmed with some kind of flying insect which made that room unusable until Kimberly (or her team) came to clean it out. The bugs didn't return. Several of the lamps seem to not work. One I know was in the living room. In the master bedroom the light would turn off if you set anything on the nightstand. The extra weight adjusted the electrical wires enough that the lights would turn off. The beach was fantastic. Plenty of places to lounge and relax. The pool was comfortable and often a lifesaver from the heat. Amazing view. Yes I enjoyed my stay! House was cooled and appreciated as it was hot! The people are amazingly friendly. The food delicious - if maybe too much food. We had 2 dinners and had left overs 5 days later! Oh the shrimp was to die for though. Meals are cash only, pay as you go. We found ourselves scrambling for cash on the first night to pay her. Oops Bottle water in the house - no one told us it was $10 per bottle (multiple gallons per bottle). We were fine paying the price as it was worth it, just one of the little things we didn't know in advance. Crabs and birds and some flying objects attracted to lights at night - all that you would expect and more. LOL Very few of the biting types though. Between the 6 of us I think only 2 got any mosquito bites at all. Crabs and bats did a good job LOL So, all and all the property was as gorgeous and comfortable as advertised and I would stay there again in another season (we were there at the end of the dry season when it was hot and brown - our mistake).

Great place for a family reunion

Property is just as described; pool and ocean were essential for beating the Guanacaste 96 degree Fahrenheit heat. Beach has great surf, too rough for the littlest kids and oldest folks but perfect for everyone in the middle to play in. Took a while to figure out where to get groceries and recommend stocking up in Liberia before you head down the coast. Listing is clear that boogie boards are available to rent from the house, wish they were included!

We are a family of 'water babies' born and raised on the beach shores of Santa Barbara, CA. (Of course the grand kids also have this ocean gene). Once my children (Julie, J.C, and Mark) became of an age when we could all travel my husband and I would take them during summer vacation on a surf safari to an exotic destination somewhere in the world. This was not only for fun, but to spend quality time with each other as well as to expose and educate them about different cultures and customs.

On a surfing safari to Costa Rica in '91 we instantly fell in love with the country, the kind and hospitable people, and the natural habitat. It was a paradise!! Long story short after returning to the States and raving to family and friends about this oasis a friend said he had the perfect property for our family in Playa Grande.

My husband flew down a month later and purchased the property for me as my 50th B-Day present! Over the past 17 years both my family and friends lives have been significantly enhanced by the beauty of the 'Tico' people, the natural wonders that surrounds us and the 'Pura Vida' lifestyle. This means Pure Life, an expression of contentment, happiness, and satisfaction with ones life. It's this philosophy that ranks Costa Rica as one of the happiest places in the world!!
