We chose Wardsboro because it gives you two mountains instead of one.

It also means you aren't paying resort-village prices to stand in resort-village crowds. Wardsboro is a real Vermont town of a few hundred people, with a country store, a gas station, and a town hall that still runs on a town meeting. Five minutes down the road and you're in it. Ten minutes the other way and you're at the base of a mountain.

The land is the other reason. Ten acres of fields, woods, and river frontage, on what was once a working quarter horse farm. No neighbors watching your fire pit. No shared driveway. On a clear night the sky is dark enough that the Milky Way is plainly visible from the hot tub.

Winter is skiing, snowboarding, snowshoeing, and snowmobile trails running through the surrounding hills. Spring brings sugaring and high water on the rivers. Summer is swimming at Lake Whitingham and Somerset Reservoir, mountain biking, golf, and long evenings outside. Fall is the one people travel across the country for — leaf season peaks late September through mid-October, and the drive along Route 100 is one of the most photographed stretches in New England.

Food and drink are close without being underfoot. Dover has restaurants and bars at the base of Mount Snow. Stratton Village has fine dining and spa services. Brattleboro, about 35 minutes, has breweries, bookstores, and a farmers market worth the trip.

Quiet land, two mountains, a real town. That combination is why we're here.

Everything a group needs to stay entertained is already on site. Heated pool, hot tub, infrared sauna, steam room, two indoor jacuzzi tubs, and a fitness center. A game room with a professional pool table, air hockey, and a PS5. Three home theater setups, including a main room with a 75-inch TV and Yamaha surround sound. Three fireplaces, fire pits, and heated floors across two levels of the main house. On a snowed-in Saturday, nobody is bored and nobody has to leave.

Then there is the location. Mount Snow is about 10 minutes and Stratton about 17, so your group can split between two mountains and still regroup for dinner. Very few properties in southern Vermont sit between both.

And because the estate is private with no neighbors in sight, the sky is genuinely dark. On a clear night the Milky Way is visible from the hot tub.
