My husband and I just returned from our Maine honeymoon and we are thrilled that we had the opportunity to stay in this wonderful cottage. The ower & his assistant were terrific, the accommodations were perfect and it was all we could do not to chain ourselves to the front porch in protest of having to leave.
Firstly, the photos included here do not do this charming cottage justice. The wood paneled walls make this home warm and cozy. The rear deck offers some outstanding views of Casco Bay and the sunset. With many windows throughout, its bright, cheerful and simply amazing. We are already saving up for a trip next year.
While we did not take advantage of the boat dock as much as we had planned due to the cooler temperatures, it would be a wonderful option in the summertime for swimming, fishing or if you have the means boating.
Peaks Island itself, is lovely and quaint. There's little action going on there, with only three restaurants/bars and a small (but very well stocked) market, ice cream shop and a small cafe for breakfast, all near the ferry terminal. So if your looking for a relaxing getaway, this is definitely the place. The ferry runs hourly for most of the day so if you need a little action during your stay, its a short ferry trip to town.
Most of the locals get around using golf carts or small electric cars and make weekly or monthly trips to the mainland to stock up on supplies not readily available on the island. They are super friendly and were very helpful to a couple of New Yorkers.
Prior to our arrival we stopped at Shaw's supermarket in Portland to purchase items we thought we would need for the trip, since I was unaware of how well stocked Hannigan's market was. I shouldn't have bothered. The selection was great. Apparently the Hannigan's slogan is "If we don't have it, you don't need it" The meat counter, while limited in comparison to big chains, carries great quality meats... beautiful steaks, freshly ground beef and chicken. I'm almost sorry we bought meat in town.
Note: The Casco Bay Ferry service, while on time and very handy, is a little wonky. Their website information (pricing and schedule) is not entirely accurate, so I suggest calling ahead before arrival. It is only by some miracle that we scored a car ferry when we arrived because according to the schedule I picked up, we had missed the last car ferry by an hour.
