Family Weekend

Ice fished and visited. Took a Ranger and had 2 snowmobiles. Also took multiple fishing shanties. Caught perch and smelt.

Returning to the lake for the first time since the 1960s

I haven't been to Higgins Lake in decades. I always loved the time I spent there as a child. We found this location, which had great views. Even though it was winter, we enjoyed our stay. The cottage was comfortable with excellent amenities. Highly recommended.

Beautiful beach front getaway!

Had a wonderful family time at this beautiful home on Higgins lake. Family used to have a cottage on Higgins lake. We've rented for a few years now. This so far is our favorite and hope to rent again next year, but hopefully longer!! Loved it!

Just perfect!!!

The pictures online don’t show how great this place is. Wonderful up north feel on the water very cozy. Has everything you need and more. Joan is very quick to respond with any questions and very nice booking again for next year!

Memorial Day Weekend Vacation

Beautiful private, sandy beach directly on Higgins Lake. With it being a holiday weekend, I was concerned it might be rowdy or loud, but this section of the lake and neighborhood was calm, quiet, and peaceful. Joan is a great host - kind, responsive, and even had a maintenance person come right away when we mentioned difficulty with the fireplace. Since the fireplace was an extra, this was not necessary, but very much appreciated so that we could enjoy it during our stay!

Family Trip

Location-location-location! Great family cottage on Higgins Lake. Very private, yet close to everything you need. Nice to have 2.5 baths! Sunsets were beautiful and the property is in a very relaxing setting with quiet neighbors and amazing views! We saw ospreys, bald eagles, pileated woodpeckers and a plethora of other wildlife. Joan was very responsive and always got back to us in a timely manner. We were already discussing booking for the following year, but sadly it is already all booked out for summer 2025.

Family weekend

We had a nice relaxing family weekend to celebrate the new year. Everything went great and Joan was very accommodating. The place was clean and had everything we needed. We will definitely be back!

Our happy place!

Higgins Lake never disappoints! And this cute cottage is perfect for our 2 families to enjoy our stay. The view from the dining table and the deck table is very relaxing. The lake windows slide open easily for a nice breeze. Fans in the rooms allow those who want to sleep in to do so without any noise. The owner responds quickly to questions. And our kids live swimming for hours each day in the lake.

Larger open areas worked well for us. Plenty of room for all. The beach was great

There was plenty of space for all. The beach was great even tho the weather wasn't always cooperative. Enjoyed fire pit at night. Sleeping space was adequate. Didn't realize we needed to supply our own bath towels. Didn't see that in the discriptors and our previous rentals supplied them. Overall everyone had a wonderful time

Beautiful home, awesome dock and beach

We had a great stay, the water is crystal clear and the dock was nice and big. A perfect base for sand-free swimming and sunbathing. Nice sturdy ladder to climb in and out of the water. There is a convenient brick walkway all the way to the dock so you can keep your feet somewhat clean and easier to walk vs thru the sand. The water is really incredible! Unlike any other lake we've visited! We hope to return with more family one day. It was just two of us and our dog but I could see a large family having plenty of room to roam. Beautiful grill and great deck with comfortable patio furniture. Views from inside and out are stunning. Peaceful and quiet. It's especially nice that there is no direct neighbor to the south which makes it feel very private. Neighbors to the north are quiet and seemed like nice people. We're from the Detroit area so on a cloudy day we took a trip to see the bridge and UP one afternoon. Only 1.5 hour drive. Stopped in Petoskey. Beautiful drive. This trip made us fall in love with Northern Michigan! We are regular HomeAway users and I promise that you will not be disappointed in this choice!!

Paradise

Joan is a great host. I communicated with her several times over the past year since making the reservation. We vacationed with my parents. The cabin was big enough for 4 people to feel very comfortable. The cabin was clean and clear instructions were given for checking in and checking out. This location was so PEACEFUL. We have stayed at Higgins Lake a lot over the last two decades and this was our favorite location because it was so quiet. The cabin is right on the lake with your own private beach area and dock. The weather was just about perfect this year and we were on the dock every night watching the sun set. The dock was large enough for 4 adults in their chairs and my large raft. It was amazing. The only complaint was my husband and I stayed in the lower level bedrooms using that bathroom most of the time. There is little room between the toilet and sink. I read the reviews on this so I was aware of that. I understand it would be a major overall to redo as Joan responded to those reviews. Not knocking it because we chose to stay there knowing that information but if you are a larger person or disabled this would be hard to maneuver. It was a much needed vacation after a cancer diagnosis, surgery and treatment for my husband. Great cabin, great location and great people to rent from. The cabin and location are Paradise!

Not sure how it ever got over 4 stars.

Property in disrepair and not maintained. Sink Rusty. It stinks terribly like mothballs all over when arrived. Opened all windows but not able to get rid of in it lower level after a week. Entry door sticks so bad we thought still locked when first arrived. Dead bugs all over outside. Only one tv with cable, firestick on other tvs needed code, not provided, for 95% of all tv shows even free channels. Bathtub beat up, lower toilet installed so close to cabinet only a child could use. Never received instructions about furnishings required to bring. Very disorganized and owner is more concerned with herself than guests comfort. We left two days early. Worst rental we have ever been. P.S. you are instructed to replace everything where you found it, strip the beds, adjust thermostats, clean the sinks, keep the counters free of crumbs, lock windows, make sure dishwasher empty etc. etc. etc. before you leave.

Great Getaway!!

We visited S'Hummer Haven in mid-October for a long weekend (Thur - Sun). The view of Higgins Lake is gorgeous from this home/location. Was able to take a chair out on the beach and sit for quite some time enjoying the beautiful lake and blue sky. The fire pit is right on the beach, so it's easy to have your toes in the sand while you sit around the fire pit (and plenty of chairs are provided!). There is a paddle boat and canoe you can use as well if you'd like to venture out into the lake. The home itself is big! Nestled a few homes back on a private, quiet, dead end drive, it's definitely a home where a large family can go and feel comfortable - and everyone can have their own "space" and room. They even had it decorated for "Halloween". One bedroom had a whole wall shelf full of games and puzzles that were fun to use; we were able to play some games we had never even heard of before! Also, if you don't bring your own groceries, there's a little Spartan Grocery Store about 6 miles away called Glen's Market. You can definitely save money by making your own meals in the kitchen instead of going out. Wi-Fi inside was also a plus. I worked with Joan during communications setting up our weekend and making payment. She was so easy to work with and I enjoyed how personable her emails were.. almost like talking to a "friend" via email. The house is exactly as described on the VRBO listing; no surprises here. I would definitely stay here again.

Always wonderful!

We love Higgins Lake, and we love staying here. Just a few steps down to the beach, and you can walk WAAAAY out into the water before it’s over your head. The cottage is cozy, and provides all that we need to have a great time with family. The fans in each room are nice for those who like to sleep in and filter out the noise… and the kids always comment on how comfortable the couches are. The big dining table overlooks the lake as you eat your meals. And you can sit out on the deck and enjoy the sunsets. The owner is always accessible and quick to respond to any questions.

I am an environmental analyst with the State of Michigan in the Department of Environmental Quality. My Wife is a teacher, mother, homemaker, and my best buddy. We have four adult children: 2 sons-in-law and one daughter-in-law. Three of our children and their families live in Michigan, and one lives in New York. We are proud grandparents of 7. We all love the lake and spend as much time up there as possible.

Ownership of our lake home was a decision that I made. My family purchased our property when I was 18 months old. From that time until I graduated from high school, I spent my summers and many spring and fall weekends at Higgins Lake. As soon as school was out, Mom and I headed north. Dad would join us on the weekends. Over the many years, I found joy in picking the wild blueberries that bloomed in front of the cottage (and in the swampy areas back on the state land behind our property (there is nothing that can beat pancakes made with just picked blueberries. I enjoyed lazy days of swimming, boating, fishing, sunning, and exploring the state-owned woods behind our lot. The back roads were available for deer and other fauna watching. We have seen deer in our backyard and wild turkeys on the beach. While ducks and herons swim in the lake and eagles soar air overhead. The experience has had a lot to do with my selection of a career in environmental protection. I became the sole owner when my parents passed away. We recently completed many renovations and repairs to make S’Hummer Haven more pleasant to visit and relax!

One of the main benefits of my home is that the area around it is still relatively undeveloped. Over the 58 years I have been coming north, I have seen many regions around Higgins and Houghton Lakes build up and become more “downstate. downstate.” Our location is still pretty much as it was when we first started coming up. Our place is on a private road, on which there has been no new construction in over 40 years. Ownership of the other areas on our road has not changed in 20 years. Our sandy beach is clean. Our side of the lake deepens gradually. An adult can walk out 100 yards and still have their head above water. Our lake water is crystal clear, and the lake bottom in front is sand.
