Beautiful home on Smith Mountain Lake near the state park. We enjoyed the spacious yard and the spacious home. There are lots of levels that allowed for privacy within each room that we really liked. The main area was spacious enough for everyone to gather. The kitchen had everything we needed, which was very important. There are two docks which the smaller one looked fairly new. That allowed for everyone to spread out for boating, fishing, and swimming. The beach was nice for the little ones. There was nice white sand for them to walk in the water and play in that area beside the fire pit. The adults enjoyed the porches at night. Plenty of driveway for parking. This one was so accommodating. We will definitely have to make it the annual spot! Ashley was easily reachable during our stay, but we fortunately didn’t need her much!

Good space for family vacation

The was very spacious. The game room and playroom were big hits and gave us in home activities for late evenings. Although some of the amenities need repair, i.e. Foosball and Air Hockey table.

Great spot for families

We held our family Christmas gathering at the Wind house. It was perfect for our large families to come together to celebrate! So many different living areas so we could spread out when needed.

Beautiful place

Lovely home with room for everyone!

WONDERFUL HOME for families to spend time together.

We enjoyed your lovely home and all its special furnishings. Our hobby (in our 70's) is landscaping with flower beds, etc. It was hard not to want to go purchase some flowers and plant them in the pots, etc. Thank you for being a wonderful host.

Lovely home at the lake

We had a lovely time at Smith Mountain Lake staying at this house! The yard was spacious along with the inside of the home! The kids enjoyed the game room. Everyone enjoyed their space for sleeping and the large areas for gathering. The home was clean and appeared as if some recent improvements were done. Would definitely recommend to friends!

Great Family Vacation

This was an excellent choice for our family vacation. The lake is beautiful, clean and great for fishing. The home was very accommodating and comfortable and was filled with evening and rainy day activities like ping pong and pool table, etc. There were eleven of us and we all felt like we enjoyed this beautiful home and the activities it offers. The screened porch was lovely and the dock was terrific for fishing and relaxing. We will return again as our family, ages 2-70 have all agreed. !

Great home for Families

We had a wonderful time staying at the Wind Family Compound. This is a perfect property for families with children. There is plenty of space for everyone to spread out and plenty for kids to do. Everything seemed clean and well kept. The neighborhood offered a lot of privacy and felt safe. Everything seemed as described online. Ashley was very easy to connect with at any time. We look forward to finding an opportunity to return!

More privacy than most lake houses

This was such a great stay for us because this home feels more private than most at the lake! There is a large yard and a feel that the other homes are not close. We had lots of space inside and outside of the home to gather and enjoy ourselves! The home was very clean and appears to have brand new carpet! The kitchen was fully stocked with everything we needed for cooking since we didn’t want to go out. Great spot for a large group without a doubt!

Decent comfortable stay

Property was neat, beds comfortable and location was amazing. There was enough to do for all ages inside the house. The management was quick to respond to enquiry. The only complaint is we need to dispose of the trash at a remote location (15min away) before checkout which was extremely inconvenient with young kids. For all the fees we pay, wish it was not the case.

HI! Thank you so much for your kind words. I'm glad you all had a good time. Unfortunately, the rural area of Smith Mountain Lake doesn't have trash pick up. Our cleaners are not able to handle all he trash in their vehicles that guests accumulate during their stay. I have the address posted in paperwork and also email it to every guest at check in. The trash disposal area isn't 15 minutes away. I'm sorry that you took it to the incorrect place. Its only 3 minutes up the road and FREE! If scheduled in advance, I can potentially arrange a one time pick up but sometimes the fee is heftier than we would like!

Lake Fall Gathering

This is an awesome house for a large group! Multiple levels to give everyone space for privacy but then big gathering areas to get together. The lawn care was finishing up when we arrived and the inside seemed freshly cleaned. You do have to take your own trash to the disposal area address given. The yard was really nice for the yard games we brought and we enjoyed using the fire pit every night. Definitely a relaxing time that no one wanted to see end.

(Aug. 2025): Overall, for this high price point, some surprising disappointments on arrival and during stay. Access communication received very close to check-in time included a grill "as is" disclaimer (ut-oh) and statement you'll need to bring your own propane (oops, too late - necessitating need to search locally, haul in then haul out tank rather than bring one along originally); several grills on property but only one seemed good/clean for use. Asked twice for yellow-jacket spray as there is an active nest along a walkway - owner promised to provide but did not follow through. Another trip to town needed. Unlike VBRO images, back yard is mostly dirt and landscaping is neglected. Back porch is nice, but screens need cleaning and screens are loose on both doors. Pool table sticks don't have tips and no chalk to be found. Only 1 flat TV satellite box works; others of no use unless hooking up a PC. House shows some wear and tear, but was clean, appointed and very well stocked. Excellent kid’s playroom and game room (apart from pool sticks and mostly worn-out ping-pong paddles). Docks, deep water, water toys and boats and water/views are excellent.

Wind Family Compound

The Vrbo add is a bit deceiving. The property is larger than advertised. It was large enough for the whole extended family and quite comfortable. The driveway is a bit small for the number of occupants it holds but that can be managed. The access to the lake could be a bit difficult if you have older folks in your group. There were stairs for the younger folks and a poorly maintained walking path some needed to navigate. The boats and floats for use were poorly maintained and quite dirty from sitting outside under one of the decks. The dock was quite large and shaded but it's suface was in poor condition. All told it was a decent place to vacation.

Hi Mark, Thank you for staying with us. The home is larger than advertised in hopes to provide comfort to families home book. Im sorry to hear that the lake toys seemed dirty. I know using them and storing them near the lake during the rainy summer we had can make it seem this way. I happy happy to hear that they were used. A wonderful family reunion

Overall, we loved our stay. The location couldn’t have been better, with plenty of room and activities for all age groups. That said, we felt that there are a few things that needed improvement. When we rented the property, there were enough bedrooms for the adults but we discovered there was one fewer than originally stated. The entry was difficult and we had to get a second code as the first one didn’t work. There are TVs that don’t work and missing remotes. One of bed actually has no bed in it. There were a few other minor issues that the owner should address. Overall, though it was a wonderful vacation! SML is an incredible vacation spot. We will return

Hi Phyllis, Thank you for staying with us and booking to stay again next year! I want to take this opportunity to correct some statements made here that may confuse others reading it since this is a public review. There are 8 bedrooms in this home. There is no false advertising of more than that. Three of the bedrooms do have twin over full bunk beds. A full bed did not work for some of Phyllis's older grandchildren whom where over 6 foot tall. There is indeed 8 bedrooms and we do not advertise inaccurately that there are more than that. It is false that there is a bed with no bed in it. Phyllis thought a sofa was a sofa bed and we do not have any sofa beds in this home. No sofas are included as beds in bedrooms or are advertised. The entry has a key code that is activated at 4pm. Phyllis's group arrived prior to 4pm and their code did not work. Codes are activated for check in time. I kindly offered a different code to gain them access a little early since the home was ready. As a rental, people place remotes all over the place. If we are informed, we can assist in getting remotes again if they are truly not found within the home. Spacious and Clean - GORGEOUS Views!

We visited the area for a family wedding and had 15 guests (11 adults and 4 children) at "the compound". The layout is wildly pieced together, but perfect for a large family group like ours. The house was clean and bright, and the kitchen is well-stocked with supplies. There is plenty of outdoor furniture for everyone to enjoy the deck/dock areas. The lakeside view is awesome! The only negative feedback we had revolved around sheets and trash. Staying at a rental home, I expect to have to strip my bed - but the fact that we all had to put sheets on our beds was an unwelcome surprise (the sheets were washed and in the rooms, but we had to make our beds). We also had to remove all trash from the property and take it 10 minutes away by car - this proved to be a challenge when we were packing our rental cars with luggage and trash! We struggled to get the TVs to work - many of the remote batteries were dead and/or we couldn't find the correct remotes. Other than those minor items, it was perfect - highly recommend this property for a fall getaway!

Nice but quirky house

This older, but remodeled and enlarged home has an interesting footprint! As others have pointed out, you have to make the beds and haul your own trash. Trash drop off location provided by the host was 4.1 miles and 8 minutes one way. As others have pointed out, the home needs lots of TLC. One of the stove burners is tough to light and didn’t burn evenly. Check-in instructions mentioned a wood fireplace, but there was none. There were three gas fireplaces, none of which worked. Compared to other rentals, host was unresponsive once we checked in, but was quite active in requesting a photo ID and guest list. Home is listed at 8,000 sf, but Realtor.com, Zillow.com, etc list around 6,300 sf. Kitchen needs more serving spoons and regular glasses, wine glasses with host’s name were plentiful! TV weren’t matched with the remotes, and we only got one working. Overall not a bad stay, but not quite what was advertised.

Hi Ron, Thank you for staying with us for Thanksgiving! This home is quirky, but indeed 8000 square feet with the renovation additions! That is why it does seem larger than advertised to most! We do not have a wood burning fireplace in this home, that is correct. There are two outdoor fire pits. We have a stone one by the beach and a metal moveable one outside. We do have three gas log fireplaces in this home. We do just keep the two in the living rooms in working condition and not the one in the game room for safety reasons. The great news is that we do have a BRAND NEW GAS STOVE in the home. Thank you for bringing to our attention the one burner not working! We do ask that guests assist in letting us know if remotes are not working so we a get that resolved. We do have linens provided, but guests will need to place them on the beds in which they use. This assists in keeping down the cleaning costs and that the cleaning can get the home clean in an efficient manner. We also ask that you take your trash out because we are unable to get trash service in our area. Thank you again for staying with us!

Two short years later, we have acquired a more amazing property than we ever thought we would find! We live only a short drive from the lake and check on our home regularly. We love our home and are excited at the opportunity to share it with you!

We searched the lake for literally 4 years looking for the ideal property. We looked at endless properties, but never could find one with a 'total package.' Often we would find a great house on a mediocre lot. Or, a great dock with undesirable water. We knew when we saw this property that our search had ended. Never had we seen a property that had it all until this one and we are sure if you stay with us that you will agree that this is a unique and unrivaled family compound!
