A car makes exploring the Sonoma Coast effortless — it unfolds for miles in either direction. Cell service is light along the coast, so downloading offline maps before you arrive is a good idea.

• From January through May, volunteers staff Bodega Head on weekends to help spot migrating gray whales - don't miss this incredible experience.
