Where does one begin...? I've never actually stayed at "a home away from home" before; always impersonal and austere hotels; get up, get your breakfast, get out. This wonderful and timeless Home was everything I hoped it would be... and more! I could look at nooks in the cliff face as I did dishes; I swear there is a ruin right across the road.
I was able to cook and move about with ease in the very well-appointed kitchen, which made it much easier to save $$ than eating out every night. There is a market just down the road (featuring local grass-fed Beef)and a full-size grocery store in Cortez complete with a Starbucks (which our teenagers loved). Not to mention The Pony Expresso, full service coffee shop &snacks & wraps right next door, which was lovely, and convenient for mornings we DID get up and out to go see the sights.
This beautiful and character-filled home accommodated 7 total for us; two adults, a toddler, and two teenagers sleeping upstairs, and my parents, in their 70's, downstairs. (There was another full-size bedroom still free, we could've easily had another couple join us!) The laundry facilities off the kitchen were a godsend. The two full bathrooms were ideal. The bedrooms upstairs were spacious and beautiful; Robbie & the Steves have worked so hard to modernize the space and make it convenient and homey, while still maintaining it's unique style.
We were all thrilled with our stay; great restaurant right across the road, called Ponderosa (NOT the chain); best hot beef sandwiches I've had since my Grandmother's, many years ago. Waitresses are knowledgeable about the area; awesome homemade Salsa- we bought several jars! Walked along the River every night after dinner (bring bug spray), beautiful walk, very relaxing and cathartic. Bedroom downstairs has walk-in shower with lots of room, easily accessible for those with knee replacements, etc; also had a seat which enabled my mother to bathe in comfort. Ceiling fans moved the air wonderfully. The Front Porch is a perfect little spot to sip Iced Tea or Lemonade while you look at the stars.
Truthfully, I have wished I was back in Delores since we have returned home so many times. It is really a lovely little town, with friendly people & beautiful sights. Don't miss the Anasazi Heritage Center; only a few miles up the road & gives you a real appreciation & understanding of the ancient peoples who inhabited this land. Thanks, Robbie & Steve. This family will definitely be coming back! :)
