We had the most amazing time at the gorgeous Villa Mar Azul on Soliman Bay. The setting is absolutely breathtaking, overlooking the turquoise waters of this peaceful bay, which is bordered by a barrier reef, thereby blessing it with gentle waves and calm waters. It's perfect for kayaking, swimming, and snorkeling. There is only one boutique hotel, and 35-ish houses along the beach, so it feels very private and quiet.
The Villa itself has been completely and beautifully remodeled and updated with a wonderful, contemporary, light and open feeling. There's a view of the magnificent water from almost every window. If you like to cook, you'll love the spectacular new kitchen, or you may like to grill at the outdoor kitchen/bar under the palapa, which is also a great place to hang out and entertain. The whole place, main house, two-story casita, palapa, pool area and beach, was immaculate and the service was absolutely wonderful and unobtrusive.
Other than laying around on our lounge chairs, reading and looking at the water, we especially enjoyed kayaking; (there are two kayaks at the property), and taking walks along the beach. Also, we snorkeled every day and saw rays, snapper, flounder, puffer fish, and many other tropical fish. We found the snorkeling to be best down near the hotel, which is a pleasant 3/4 mile walk down the beach. You can also kayak or swim out closer to the reef for great snorkeling.
We loved going into Tulum for breakfasts and dinners. It's a short 10-15 minute drive from the Villa. It's fun to walk around Tulum as well, and we found some really great boutique shopping. In general, meals were incredibly reasonable. We also had a fantastic meal and enjoyed live music at Oscar & Lalo's, just across the highway.
We really fell in love with Mar Azul, and truly can't wait to go back. We left feeling rested and rejuvenated and it now has a special place in our hearts!
