Rest and Relaxation Beachfront on the Wild West Coast


Welcome to Mawhiti Cottage. We hope that you have a wonderful stay in our much loved home, so named because this is the perfect place to switch off, forget the world and just relax! Mawhiti is the Maori word for ‘escape’; the very essence of what our cottage offers: peace, tranquillity, and serenity. The sunsets are amazing, the soothing sound of the waves in the background, and the stunning views make it one of the most special places to stay in the area. It is wild and windy though, and sand gets in everywhere, but if you are ok with that, just sit back and enjoy the magic of the setting. If you choose to keep in touch with the modern world, we have fibre optic internet, which means that you can take your laptop to the table on the deck and work from home, enjoying the views and sea air.

Mawhiti Cottage is very close to the Northern Wairoa Golf Club, where you can enjoy either a 9 or 18 hole round of golf for a very reasonable green fee, and golf carts are also available to hire.

A few important things to note before booking:
*The price per night is for two people. At this time, we are limiting guest numbers to two people only.

*You will need to supply all of your own linen. The beds have pillows and duvets.

* Because of our eco-friendly sewerage system, guests are requested to only use eco friendly personal products at the cottage.

*Please note that access to the cottage is down a short grassy slope, which can be slippery when wet. Those with mobility issues may find this a challenge.

*At this stage, outdoor living is limited to the very large ocean facing deck as work is not yet complete on the other outdoor areas. Currently, there are still some building materials on the cottage grounds.

* Mawhiti Cottage is strictly no smoking

* Mawhiti Cottage is unable to accommodate pets.

The Kitchen was more tha well equipt with Bosch appliances and beautiful dinnerwear and cuttlery . Very good sharp knives and plenty of pots and pans plus servingware. The bed was very comfortable in bedroom with beautiful views of the ocean. Beautiful bathroom. Of course the jewel of the crown was the magnificent view of Baylys Beach with all her personalities of a west coast beach. Sandra was a wonderful host and I highly recommend this slice of heaven at anytime of the year.

A little oasis

Loved staying in Blackbeards cottage. Perfect location. Comfy and well stocked kitchen made cooking very easy. Once the bathroom is done up it will be close to perfect. Sandra is a great communicator and easy to deal with. Highly recommended

Wow, what a fantastic iconic Kiwi Bach. Loved it. View from the place was awesome, sunset amazing, was clean, cosy and comfy. Communication and thoughtfulness of the host could not of been better. Didn't want to leave.Thank you for a wonderful holiday.

Magical Place

10 Stars. I love this place. Cute and perfectly formed. It has everything you need for a simple west coast beach stay. Everything was nice and clean. The view is amazing, and the beach feels almost out of this world at times. Would love to go back.

Easter Break

We loved this place. Amazing location on the edge of the dunes and looking out across the beach to the sea. The bach is simple and well equipped with a very comfortable bed. It was a relaxing stay and we even enjoyed a swim in the surprisingly warm ocean. Already planning our next visit to this charming seaside village.

Wonderful Wild West location

Didn’t know the traffic roaring up and down the beach would be so noisy - especially the Saturday Great to see all the nippers there in the morning but all driven in big cars. We did have trouble working out the key was for the sliding door not the one in front of us. Sandra assisted us very promptly with that thanks. The toilet wasn’t clean and the bed squeaked but we did enjoy our time thanks. The stayz process of advertising $93 a night then charging $315 for two was confusing and disappointing. All the best.

Blackbeard’s Cottage was bought sight unseen when we lived in Hong Kong. It was quite some time before we got to see it in person, and although in poor condition, we loved it immediately. We have slowly worked to make improvements, and are just about there, with just the exterior landscaping and some exterior painting to complete. As we do not currently live in NZ, this is a slow process!
