Just 14 miles east of downtown Traverse City, Cozy Cottage on the Boardman River, is a retreat off the beaten path. It is in a quiet area but still close enough to lots of the region's best places. The cottage sits on five acres along the banks of the Boardman River, a blue-ribbon trout stream nestled deep in the woods of the Pere Marquette State Forest.

This home can accommodate eight guests, includes 3-queen beds, 2-single beds in two bedrooms, 2.5-bathrooms, and a spacious open kitchen, dining, and living area with a wood-burning fireplace. It has its own private river frontage and also adjoins state land, providing additional river frontage and hiking trails. Guests can enjoy activities such as hiking, kayaking, canoeing, inner-tubing, swimming, fishing, fly fishing, morel mushrooming, bird watching, and snowshoeing. Cozy River also has a charcoal grill and fire pit available to enjoy the outdoor natural surroundings.

Located 1.8 miles from the Supply Road Snowmobile and ORV staging area and trails. It is two miles to the VASA Singletrack Trailhead for fat tire biking, snowshoeing, cross-country skiing, and hiking. Drive three miles to Ranch Rudolph horseback riding trails, and 10.2 miles to Flint Fields for the Horses by the Bay Horse Show.

It was very clean and roomy, even for being a little on the smaller size overall. Beds were comfortable, everything was working, clean and in order. We didn't go at the prettiest time of year but it was still a really nice property - even better in the summer I am sure. Would highly recommend!

We enjoyed the fire pit and the surrounding chairs. Loved the design and layout of the cottage and the generous offerings of the host. My only wish would be to have some window coverings in the main area of the house for nighttime.

First impression of house and property was amazing! You will not be disappointed in this choice. Home was well supplied. You may want to bring a few more kitchen towels if you plan on washing several dishes. We enjoyed the peaceful river and walks through the wooded area and Brown Bridge road.

Wonderful, peaceful, glam cottage

This is “cottage” glamping on the highest order. High end design meets the Up North woods… two of my favorite things. All the creature comforts, with the quiet and peace of woods and river. The property managers were available and responsive helping us with check in and granting us a bit more time due to the extreme weather (heat) during our stay. I was there to visit my ailing mother primarily, but coming back to stay here after our visits really made this last minute trip a respite of peace and refreshment. The dogs thoroughly enjoyed having the woods and river to explore. I had limited mobility on crutches, but managed a trip down the relatively short, narrow dirt path to the river. Absolutely beautiful inside and out. Loved our stay. Will definitely look here first for future visits. You won’t be disappointed!!For those who have physical and/or mobility limitations, the hard surface floors and ample doorways should help with wheelchair access. Though technically not an accessible space, it is workable. Both bedroom baths have hand showers - a huge help. The bunkbed bedroom’s attached bathroom has a low threshold step in shower (bring your own shower bench, if needed). There are no grab bars; keep that in mind. The toilets are standard height. (Helpful info to know if needed).

2nd Annual Couple’s Fishing Trip

We stayed here last year and couldn’t wait to come back!! The Cozy River Cottage is exactly that! You can read my review from the end of June 2024. Everything applies! We fished out of a couple places: the Elk Rapids Harbor was approximately a 20 minute drive. Lake Skegemog was approximately 20 minutes and the DNR ramp on Mission Peninsula was about 25-30 minutes. The boys caught a couple trout in the River behind the house waiting for the charcoal to fire up. We are already looking forward to booking our trip next year!!

Perfect girls weekend getaway

This property was the perfect space for all of us… Plenty of beds, bathrooms, and the living area was so cozy with the fireplace… The outside is absolutely beautiful and the river was so fun to walk down to… Close enough to Traverse City to do shopping, but also go to other towns nearby. This is a place. I will definitely come back to and recommend to others. My group of girlfriends do an annual trip every year and this was a perfect choice.

We had a fantastic time at this beautiful home. The glass windows and huge deck allowed for great visibility of the changing colors on the trees. Taking a walk on the trail by the river is such a nice way to start the day. Wonderful place and comfy beds.

Great for recreation

Very new house in serene environment, surrounded by woods including a little stream in the back of the property. We liked the seclusion, yet not too far from Traverse City, beaches, wineries (15-30 minutes drive).

A beautiful & relaxing spot!

This property is gorgeous. Very clean, very peaceful and sits along the boardman river. 20 min drive to Traverse City but away from everyone. We loved the layout and everything was top notch! This is a must!

Absolute Gem!!

This house is AMAZING!! Modern with all the right amenities and decorated with just the right amount of natural accents. Plus it’s surrounded by the beauty of nature, the Boardman River and a carpet of ferns. We were in the area to fish Grand Traverse Bay, Torch Lake and ended up in Petoskey’s Little Traverse Bay. We were with another couple who also brought their fishing boat. It was a little tight backing up 2 boats/trailers but there was plenty of room once we got them down the driveway. Beds were comfy, showers were fabulous, and there wasn’t anything we needed that it didn’t have. The only thing we couldn't find in the listing was if we needed charcoal for the grill….you do. But there’s a Dollar General not very far that solved that! We loved it so much that we chose to stay on the property on our last night instead of heading into Elk Rapids for dinner just to enjoy the surroundings on the spacious deck! Highly recommend and will stay there again in a heartbeat!!

Overall, I recommend this vacation rental. Reviewer Comments: This incredible cottage sits on 5 acres of beautiful and secluded property. We loved the setting, even with rainy 40° weather, but our week was ruined to find that we had been unaware that we were under surveillance by an outdoor hidden camera monitoring our every move inside the great room. Though apparently intended for security purposes on the sliders which have no window treatments, it was unsettling. VisitUpNorth dismissed our concerns and suggested we simply unplug the camera during the remainder of our stay but instructed us to plug it back in upon our departure. The camera should have been disclosed. A report was filed with the Grand Traverse Sheriff’s Dept.
