Welcome to Gearing Down!

Enjoy our Captiva Island vacation home in luxury. After sustaining damage in Hurricane Ian, we took the last two years to completely rebuild our island home, adding even more amenities.

Boasting an expansive floor plan with 4 bedrooms and 5.5 bathrooms that sleeps 14, Gearing Down is a desirable bayside home. Witness breathtaking sunrises from the covered lanai overlooking the private dock. Enjoy the peaceful serenity swept in by the cool gulf breeze in the private pool or hot tub.

On the first living level you’ll find a STUNNING BRAND NEW kitchen complete with bar/icemaker and island style seating at the center island and lounge chairs overlooking the bay. Adorned with all new furniture and fixtures, and the necessary amenities this first level is home to a formal dining table to seat 10, vast living room space, 3 king bedrooms with ensuites and a new fun powder bath located off the foyer.

The master suite, located on the uppermost level, is furnished with a king size bed and private his and her bathroom complete with shower and free standing tub and water closet. Roll out of bed and soak in the sun’s rays on the master suite balcony while overlooking the bay, dock and pool. Adjacent to the master suite is the 4th guest room fitted with 2 bunk beds comprised of 4 full sized beds. This bedroom now has a fun new nautical themed bathroom as well and easy access to the homes front sundeck.

Additional new features include a whole house SONOS sound system, TVs in all bed rooms, conveniently located HDMI port in bunk room for game consoles. Pool with automation and spa control. New Grilling area next to pool. Brand new outdoor shower with hot and cold to wash off the salt and sand!

Everything from flooring to bath fixtures is brand new. This 7 figure renovation covers all the bases from decorative ceilings to a new fishing station on the spacious dock. The fishing is fantastic! Snook, Grouper, Trout, redfish right off the dock!

Gearing Down is centrally located to the Village of Captiva. The island’s restaurants, rental stores and retail shops are all within walking distance. A short walk through the village takes you to the beach where you can experience the postcard-worthy Captiva Island sunsets. Golf cart and bike rentals available. Ask us about our new boat lift available for rent.

Amazing House and Views

This is one of the nicest rentals you could stay at on Captiva. Everything about the house is 1st class. The views from the pool and back porch are breathtaking and the convenience to all of Captiva's shops and restaurants cannot be beat. Our kids loved fishing off the dock out back while my wife and I could lounge in the pool. 100% as advertised.

Nice family getaway

This property lives up to the photos. Our three-generation family (2 grandparents 70+, 2 kids in 40s, 2 grandkids 10 and 7) enjoyed a great week between pool with bayside views and beach a short walk away. Dolphins swam by almost every day. Just be aware the upstairs master suite shares its bathroom with upstairs twin-bedded room.

Family time, summer vacation

We enjoyed the beautiful morning sunrise from the lanai , having our boat tied to the dock for early morning trips to the private beaches for snorkeling and some awesome fishing. Afternoons by the pool laughing together and grilling our fresh catch of the day . Walking to the shops to browse , getting ice cream or dinner at Doc fords . Strolling down to the Mucky Duck while we watched the sunset by the beach . We made memories around the kitchen table playing games till we wandered back to the dock for some late night fishing to end our perfect days. Owners were always available to answer our questions. addressed then quickly and ensured our stay was perfect. Thanks for the memories !

great week at Gearing Down

great property on the intercoastal, fishing off the dock every day, kids loved it, quite street that is literally a 3-4 minute walk to everything. we had golf carts and didn't even use them!

Fantastic!!!

This was a family vacation with several generations and there was something for everyone. We made use of the fantastic pool daily, and enjoyed the screened in porch at night while having dinner and enjoying the view. The location made it easy to explore the island. The owners are absolutely amazing. They responded quickly throughout the process when we had questions. The house is beautifully decorated and felt like home. Thank you Karen and Jeff for letting us share your beautiful home. It was an absolutely amazing experience.

Beautiful home in the most perfect location

We stayed for a week with another family and cannot describe how wonderful and perfect this home is! We parked our cars and barely had to get in them for the entire week. The home was just beautiful, with a great layout, amenities and wonderful pool area with hot tub and dock. Just as described. with the most unbelievable view of the bay. It is very quiet on the island and in that area, but within walking distance to beach, restaurants, shops and anything else. Large grocery store is down on Sanibel - about 20 minutes away. We rented a golf cart and really loved it! The only thing to be aware of is the 4th bathroom is actually downstairs in the basement area to be used while you are lounging in the pool. There are two bedrooms on the very top floor - the master and a guest room. The guest room will have to use either the master bath or go downstairs to use one on the main living area. Wasn't a big deal at all, but I missed that detail originally. We absolutely loved Gearing Down and hope to return! Highly recommend.

Wonderful vacation for two families

This house was perfect for our two families which included 4 small children. I'm hesitant to write about how great of a week we had staying here because we don't want others to find out about this place ! :) The kids had so much fun on the dock either fishing or looking for manatees. They even woke up extra early each morning to sit out with the adults and watch the beautiful sunrises. We spent most days by the pool for a few hours and then we would either head to the beach or go somewhere for lunch/dinner. We really enjoyed the village and while we rented a golf cart for the week, we probably didn't need it as most places were just a short walk away from the house. We will certainly be back to Captiva and we'd love to stay at this house again, if available.

Beautiful house, perfect location

I can't say enough about how wonderful this lovely Captiva Island home was and how much we loved it. The home is beautifully decorated and appointed. Everything was first class, including the colorful Fiestaware dishes, the abundant glassware, every pot or pan you could need, beach towels, etc. The bikes in the garage were an unexpected bonus, along with the ice machine and two washers and dryers. The location is stunning. Being right on the water, we saw daily "performances" from the dolphins. We used the screened lanai constantly. The pool is very nice and there were even some pool toys provided in the lower level/garage area. The house is situated on a small side street that doesn't get much traffic, but just steps away is all the excitement you would want from the abundant nearby restaurants and shops. Jeff and Karen were very responsive to any questions we had. Overall, I would highly recommend this property. We had a great time and were very very comforatable there.

Outstanding!

Our stay at Gearing Down exceeded our expectations! Our family has been traveling to Sanibel and Captiva for over 40 years and we have never enjoyed our time more. The property was beautiful and the views were breathtaking! We hope to make Gearing Down our new vacation house each year. This house is stunning! Highly recommend!

This house is something very special and I cannot recommend it enough. The views of the bay are spectacular. Dolphins and manatee swim past the your private dock regularly throughout the day. All of the rooms are beautifully decorated and have everything you need and more to make your stay wonderful. You’re located on a very quiet street, just a minutes walk from the restaurants, shops and the beach. The owners are very friendly and helpful. Thank you so much Karen and Jeff for letting us share your home. We can’t wait to return next year!

Great week, great House.

This is a very special house and the owners are awesome. Some of our most precious family memories have been made in this home which we first rented when our oldest son was 2, he is now 27! Beautifully maintained and kept immaculate. We've already booked for next summer!

Could not have been better!

We were blessed to celebrate 33 years of marriage at Gearing Down Dec 9-16. Karen made reserving the house super easy ... even when UPS lost the package containing the keys for us to get in the house. The home was just perfect! We have never stayed on the Bay, but it was fabulous! A golf cart (rented from YOLO) made it easy-peasy to scoot to the Gulf in about three minutes to catch sunset each and every night. Each morning brought an awesome sunrise over the Bay. It was just amazing. Thank you Youngs for the hospitality and the anniversary gift upon our arrival. We hope to return very soon!

Bayside property does NOT disappoint!

This was our fifth vacation on Captiva which has captured our hearts and become our favorite destination. This was the first time renting a home instead of staying at a resort, and this property is fantastic. Only able to get it because someone else had to cancel their standing annual reservation, and it was an amazing stroke of luck for us. The home is beautiful, very well maintained, and really comfortable. I had some concerns about staying on the bay side (all previous stays on island were in cottages on the gulf side on the beach) but the sunrises were amazing and the property is far enough along the bay that you look across at open water. Great appliances, wonderful washer and dryer, commercial ice machine was a huge surprise and much appreciated. Pool and hot tub are fantastic. Internet connection was a bit quirky for brief periods of time, but was fine most of the time with good connection speeds. Can't say enough good things about this place or the owners. Definitely hope to be back again sometime!

Captiva Favorite!

This was the fourth home on Captiva that my family and I have rented. It was our favorite for sure! Not only is the home itself beautiful, but it is in a perfect location. We didn't need to rent a golf cart this year...easy walk to everything we needed. The bay views are so peaceful. We sat on the dock every morning and watched manatee and dolphin swim by. We caught 13 different species of fish right off the dock. We enjoyed the pool everyday. It was an easy walk to the village for restaurants or to the beach for walks and sunsets. You won't be disappointed with this home, and the owners are kind and responsive.

Fantastic Fishing! Watching the beautiful sunrise over the bay, private pool with Jacuzzi, private boat dock, back patios, spacious living accommodations. Biggest, most private lot in this location. Private home but if you want to get in the mix, just walk down the street and you will be in the heart of the village!
