"Great Escape" is the perfect name for this home. There is relaxation and lots of country fun at this wonderful private location just off Lake Skegemog in the Rapid City/Elk Rapids area. The Great Escape was originally an up north camp in the mid-1960s/70s and now serves as a charming northern retreat. Take your family back in time to when kids played outside and adults relaxed on the porch sipping iced tea on warm summer days. Featuring a total of 3-bedrooms and 3.5-bathrooms in the main house, you can bring the whole family, plus there are two rustic bunk houses outside that are great for kids or adventurous adults. The house is two stories. (New kitchen summer 2022)

Enjoy the great outdoors with many fun family activities or relax on the large front porch to take in the beautiful country views.

Dogs welcome. Guests are responsible for cleaning up after their pets. No smoking. Window air conditioner upstairs only.

Tons of on property activities, board games and fun. Skegemog access walkable and better water than expected. Amplespace including bedrooms and bathrooms for a party of 8 with constant visitors. Would suggest better insect control as ants and earwigs are quite prevalent in the house. A bit overpriced (probably higher due to bed count) as not on the water.

Family reunion

We were in the Elk Lake area for a long-awaited family reunion. We have family members with a house on the lake nearby, so were already familiar with the area. The house went beyond expectations with a mix of lovely updated features (particularly the kitchen which is stocked with excellent cooking supplies) and cozy old-school camp style. The house is full of books (classics from Hemingway through Harry Potter), board games (lots of current strategy games) and cozy hang out nooks in and out of the house. The front porch is a great spot any time of day to sit in the Adirondack chairs and watch the sunrise, spot the deer in the field across the street or eat at the picnic table. There is no wifi which can be tricky for those like me with limited data or my husband who had to keep working while on our trip. There is an excellent public library in Elk Rapids with good wifi and an excellent, helpful staff. The house is not on the water but Elk Rapids has a great public beach right in town with free parking and easy access. A lot of the beach is sandy in the water but wearing water shoes are a good idea for avoiding the occasional sharp or slippery rocks and shells. Thank you for a great week!

Great place for a crowd

Overall, I recommend this vacation rental. Reviewer Comments: We rented this home for 3 families visiting from Australia and Ohio. The facilities were perfect for our needs. We had 6 adults, 2 older teens and two younger children.Our only problem was around the communication with the rental agent. We received specific instructions, the day before the rental, telling us that there was a key safe and giving us the combination. We spent quite some time searching for the key safe and then discovered that the back door was unlocked and the key was on the kitchen bench. Also, we were told that there would be no supplies in the rental. We made a trip to the supermarket before hand and spent several hundred dollars purchasing everything from salt & pepper to paper towels only to find when entering the property that it was well stocked and we only needed to top up the supplies.All up, we would be thrilled to stay in this property again on our next trip.

Fantastic Home! Would love to stay here again.

The house was really great! The home is located on a quiet street that dead ends at the lake. We didn't spend too much time there, but we walked to the end of the road and our boys took an impromptu swim. Note- there isn't much beach area. The front porch was fantastic. We enjoyed morning coffee and an evening glass of wine watching the many deer just across the road. My children had a great time in the hammock swings. We also enjoyed the many yard activities, and wish we had more time to just enjoy the house/yard! The interior of the house was also great. The kitchen is beautifully redone and we enjoyed cooking there. They had everything we needed to cook our meals- thank you! There are two family room areas in the main house, and although we didn't spend that much time inside during our stay, we loved the comfortable couches and being able to relax. There is one bedroom on the first floor, which has access to the main bathroom. It has a full-size bed. I would strongly encourage they consider putting a Queen size bed there! It worked well for my sibling/sister in law and the room easily accomodated our pack and play for their small baby! With them downstairs, we didn't even hear the middle of the night crying from upstairs. Upstairs, to the right there is a bedroom with a Queen bed and it's own nicely refinished bathroom. To the left, there is a small sitting area, a small bedroom (twin bed with a pull out trumble bed) and then a very large master bedroom with a comfortable King Size bed. The bathroom is located in the Master. There are two AC units upstairs (Master and Queen bedrooms). Thankfully, it wasn't very hot while we were there, but I could imagine it might get warm upstairs at the height of the summer. They did provide fans which was helpful. Some of the photos online are a bit confusing. There are two additional structures/houses in addition to the main home. The first has a Queen size bed. The second is a camp-style with bunks. It's PERFECT for a bit older children, ours were a bit young to stay out there by themselves. Overall, this was a great place to stay for our family vacation! We would absolutely stay again. The location is great, there is so much to do in the area.

It was okay

The property has a nice, well equipped kitchen. The location is isolated and picturesque. It's about 15 min to Elk Rapids and 5 min to Torch Lake Bridge. The front porch is a nice place to sit but dangerous for small children since there is no railing. The kids couldn't play on the trampoline because it was covered with sap from the trees but they enjoyed the hammocks. The bedroom on the first floor is private but the bed is full size so it could be a tight fit for two adults. There is a sink in the first floor bedroom which was convenient. There are A/C window units in the upstairs bedrooms but it was down in the 50's and 60's at night during our mid-July stay so we were comfortable.

Relaxing vacation with extended family

We had a great time at this property! We stayed here with my parents, our kids and my brother's kids. The house is large and comfortable, with tons of toys and games in case of a rainy day (including a HUGE assortment of Legos, all in color-sorted bins, that the kids played with for hours). The front porch is wonderful to sit and eat on. The kitchen is small but has everything you need to cook for a crowd. Note, the house isn't super close to a swimmable beach - the lake you can walk to doesn't have a beach nearby. But there are nice beaches within a close drive of the house. There are also tire swings, many hammocks, lawn games, a baseball diamond - tons of fun stuff to do around the house. The kids had a great time sleeping in the bunk house too. The property management company was the only downside. They provide generic information for all of their properties, some of which was inaccurate (for example - it says there's no food or supplies at all in the kitchen, in fact there are spices, oil, vinegar, and staples). They didn't put out the hot coals in the fire ring from the previous guests, and one of the kids got a very bad burn because they stepped into the ring (not realizing the coal was there because it was covered by ashes). The previous guests hadn't put out the trash to be picked up, so the bins were totally full, but the property managers insisted that we put additional trash on top of the full bins so that they were seriously overflowing when the trash pick up service came.

Perfect location A

The location was perfect for us. One in our party is a kayak enthusiast and with so many choices on where to launch and paddle, he was a very happy person. Nearby Beaches are quiet and beautiful which is a plus for us snd we enjoyed the small town feel of towns nearby. There was plenty of room to spread out in this rental too which made it feel home-like. We had a very good time.

Michigan Get Away

It was a perfect spot to enjoy the beautiful area with privacy due to Covid 19. The little ones had a blast exploring the property and surrounding lakes. We hope to go back again!

Extended family getaway

The yard was fantastic with the two chair swings and kickball field! The bedrooms were good as well as the fox bunk house. We were not able to use the larger of the two bunk houses because the screens needed repair and allowed bugs in the bunk house. We spoke to someone the day we checked in and asked for repair however, no one came so we had to fit everyone in the house which we were not planning on. The property was about four miles from a great beach on Torch Lake which we loved! All in all a nice house, only complaint would be the bunk house was not usable for sleeping.

Overall, I recommend this vacation rental. Reviewer Comments: If you are considering this property, itā€™s probably because you have a large party to accommodate. Note that there is NO central air. There are 3 window AC units. One in the upstairs master (2 people), another in the upstairs guest room (3 people) and one in Cabin A (2 people). That means the remaining 11 guests will have to endure the summer heat at night. Cabin B that accommodates 8 people does not have an AC unit and feels 10 degrees hotter than the outside temp. During moderate temperatures, the house would be fantastic. Great location, property size and amenities (kitchen supplies, outdoor games, books to read, fire pit, climbing wall, picnic bench, hammock, horse shoes etc.) Finally, it shouldā€™ve been disclosed that there was a septic issue at the time. It looks like there was run off from the septic tank. From the tank down to the front lawn there was hay and noticeable work that was done. The kids were playing in the hay not knowing that it had absorbed some of that run off.

Overall, I recommend this vacation rental. Reviewer Comments: Overall, this was a great experience. The property was amazing, with so many outdoor activities and that huge patio. While it was clean, we did have some bug issues. Pest control came quickly to take care of wasp nests, but the bunk house and small cottage need some upkeep and cleaning. It is tricky to keep them completely pest free, but the cobwebs could be removed/dusted out. We also couldn't tell if blankets had been washed, or just sheets? If staying with a large group, as we did, be aware that there are really only two beds for couples, a king and a queen. One couple slept on twins and the other out in the little cabin. This was a fun, rustic, spot, but the bed is truly awful to sleep on for a week. It is just a mattress, no spring underneath it, and it was terrible. The kids loved the bunkhouse, and we had no issues with being too hot or too cold, and no one got wet in the storms we had. We loved being outside and playing kickball, badminton, running around, the hammocks. The trash cans were completely full when we arrived and they did come to remove stuff for us. We left them out for Friday pick up, but then by Sunday when we left, we left them almost entirely full. Might need to work on that for future guests. The area is stunning, so many options within a half hour-one hour drive. The door on the patio did not close completely, and was never actually locked, so that should be fixed. Anyone could have gotten in. Overall a fun property, great for lots of kids, but need more bed options for couples, and keep the outdoor sleeping spaces cleaner.

The children had endless things to do, never once did any of them say " Im bored" We had day trips planned, location seemed pretty central. We all agreed if we ever wanted to go back to this area we would definitely choose this rental again.

Great property for extended family

Rating Details: The property manager was very helpful. The vacation rental was spotless. I was more than happy with the location. I was very satisfied with the condition of the vacation rental. Overall, I recommend this vacation rental. Reviewer Comments: We had a great time at the Great Escape. The property itself kept everyone occupied, especially the kids. The Eagle cabin was perfect for the eight grandkids. The house was clean, the kitchen was very functional, and the gas grill was brand new. The only things I would change would be 1) put a showerhead in the 2nd upstairs bath, and 2) I wish it was closer to the water. 0.5 mile walk. Great stay!

Family gathering to attend a TC wedding!

Rating Details: The property manager was very helpful. The vacation rental was spotless. I was very happy with the location. I was more than satisfied with the condition of the vacation rental. Overall, I recommend this vacation rental. Reviewer Comments: We did enjoy staying at the Lake Skegamog house. It gave us the opportunity to socialize together over morning coffee on the porch and breakfast before going off for our wedding activities. We did get to eat at Pearl's in Elk Rapids and at Short's Brewery in Bellaire. We highly recommend both. Time at the beach and wine tasting rounded out the time that we had left over from the wedding. The house location was an advantage for these activities. Our only disappointment was that we were led to believe that there were 2 queen beds in the main house and there was only one. We had to rearrange sleeping asignments because of this.

Rating Details: The property manager was more than helpful. The vacation rental was clean. I was somewhat unhappy with the location. I was satisfied with the condition of the vacation rental. Overall, I recommend this vacation rental. Reviewer Comments: It should be very clear in the ad that there is no central air and only window air conditioners in the upstairs. It was 97 degrees while we were there and very uncomfortable. It would be helpful if there was information in the house about locations of beaches nearby (took us 2 days to find a large public beach)and other attractions and activities. The house is in more of a remote location than we had anticipated. The lake access that is noted in the ad is nothing more than a drop off at the end of the street (as far as we could tell). We did enjoy the stay and the large grounds around the house.

Rating Details: The property manager was more than helpful. The vacation rental was somewhat dirty. I was more than happy with the location. I was satisfied with the condition of the vacation rental. Overall, I recommend this vacation rental. Reviewer Comments: Pleasant stay and great property. Disappointed that the trash from the previous tenant was left right by the back door. We ended up moving it by it still smelled and was terrible to deal with all week. Upstairs shower leaked into mud room. Door to mud room bath wouldn't work. Fridge kept going off, but it was also extremely hot out.
