This experience was unacceptable and extremely stressful, particularly because it was our family Christmas vacation.Upon arrival, the home was unsanitary and clearly not properly cleaned. We observed:Spider webs throughout the main living areaGeneral uncleanliness that did not reflect a paid cleaning feeNo batteries in the fire alarmNo carbon monoxide detector presentThese are basic safety requirements, especially for a home accommodating families and children. We were traveling with our family and immediately felt unsafe and uncomfortable.When I contacted the host to report the condition of the home, I sent photos documenting the issues. Instead of addressing the concerns professionally, the host was dismissive and disrespectful and explicitly told me not to contact VRBO. This response alone was alarming.Because of the condition of the home and lack of immediate support, my husband and I had to clean the house ourselves late into the night, purchase cleaning supplies, and buy a carbon monoxide detector just to feel safe enough to stay. This was not how we planned to spend the start of a holiday trip.I contacted VRBO multiple times, provided documentation, and requested reasonable remediation. Despite the seriousness of the sanitation and safety issues:VRBO was slow to respondThe concerns were repeatedly minimized or dismissedNo comparable alternative property was offeredWe were told the host would only refund the cleaning feeWe requested at least a one-day.
