Tan Hill, the highest pub in England, is romantically set in a wild, moorland landscape, five miles away, and there is a good selection of pubs, restaurants and galleries in Brough and Kirkby Stephen, six miles away. A 15 mile drive will take you to the market town of Barnard Castle hosting an array of shops, pubs and restaurants.
