When we bought our lake house (ggâs Place) in 2006, we met our beloved neighbor Margaret Dodd. At first glance we saw a frail, stooped, 90 year old woman but we soon learned she was much more than that. At 90 years old and living on the lake, we never saw her without being dressed, full makeup, and heels! She would meet us on Friday afternoons with fresh baked cookies, strawberry pies, and other assorted goodies. We spent hours rocking on her porch and listening to tales of the old days on the lake when moonshiners would ârunâ their stills just up the creek, or a seaplane would land on the lake and bring friends to visit. She told stories of how she taught her grandsons to ski âright off of the beachâ and how her late husband Garvin would go fishing early in the mornings and she had a full breakfast ready for him and the other fisherman that would âdrop by.â She even had a story of how as an Eastern Star Matron she was once locked out on a balcony at the Governorâs Mansion and had to shimmy across a ledge in an evening gown to get to an open window and climb back into the mansion.
We never dreamed that one day we would have the privilege to own her home with its rich history. We purchased the home in the fall of 2016 and have been working and adding our touches to Waterâs Edge ever since.
