This town's history is intertwined with the medieval castle of the Soardo and Bembo families, dating back to the 15th century, and is mentioned in ancient records as the Roman settlement of Castrum Vallis. It's yet another quintessential Istrian town, with narrow streets, stone houses, and a unique atmosphere. The bell tower of the Parish Church of St. Julian dominates the town, constructed at the end of the 19th century. The restoration of the Bembo Palace has been recently completed, and nearby stands a fine example of a town loggia. The town center enjoys protected status.
