Levanto, a city of pre-Roman origins, lies in the far north of the seductive villages of the Cinque Terre. The name Levanto comes from the medieval Latin levantem, east, meaning "a place east of Genoa".
The town of Levanto has an interesting old town, many beautiful painted villas, a lively Wednesday market, good restaurants and shops. In the main square, Piazza della Loggia, there is a lovely 13th-century loggia.
Levanto boasts a particularly mild climate. The long sandy beach is ideal for all beach activities. It is a great base for surfers, who come from all over Europe. Also on the beach, there is a swimming pool and a scuba diving center. In the summer there are many concerts and live music events. The area also boasts an excellent culinary tradition, thanks to the Cinque Terre wines and local fish recipes.
Levanto is a great starting point for visiting the villages of the Cinque Terre, whether by train, by sea or by taking excursions.
Genoa, Pisa, Lucca and Florence can easily be visited in a day, by train or car.
