In the cellar of the buildings is a surviving sandstone arch of the medieval Tyne Bridge. The Watergate Buildings are also on the site of the medieval Bridge Chapel of St. Thomas the Martyr, which stood on the north end of the medieval Tyne Bridge. The chapel was demolished in the 1820s/30s. The Church of St Thomas the Martyr, at Barras Bridge, was built by John Dobson in 1827-30 to replace the medieval chapel. A narrow alley, called Watergate, runs along the east side of the Watergate Buildings.
