Cycle the Parenzana
Built in 1902, left to rust after 1935, the Parenzana was a narrow-gauge rail that ran from Trieste, winding through the bucolic Istrian interior before terminating at Poreč. In those days, this was all Italy andPoreč was Parenzo, hence the name. Running for over 60 kilometres, it has gradually been revived, section by section, by local outdoor enthusiasts. There’s even a short stretch of rail, between Motovun andVižinada, plied by a tourist train. Mostly, though, theParenzanais patronised by cyclists and hikers, and regularly facilitated with improvements such as maps, benches, bike racks and service stations equipped with air pumps and repair kits. In September, it stages the three-dayMTB Parenzana race, one of many events in a busy cycling calendar

The main telescope in the observatory is used for research purposes and observations through it are not possible.

Explore underground lakes
Halfway from Poreč to Višnjan, theBaredine Cavehas been a major tourist attraction since opening to the public in 1995. Tours are advertised all over Poreč. You can travel here independently –there’s a car park right outside –but all visits are guided ones, and take place every 30 minutes, in English among other languages. You’re first led along a pathway 300 metres long before reaching 60 metres deep, where you find underground lakes and five otherworldly chambers filled with ancient stalactites and stalagmites. In the waters you should see the strange-looking olm, or European cave salamander, blind and pink, hence its alternative name of the human fish in Croatian. Given its appearance and habitat – it does everything underwater –the olm has been the subject of many a local legend. Tours last 40 minutes. Wear decent shoes, hold on to the railings when negotiating slippery stairs and be prepared for a fair climb back up.

Porečis a town located in the heart of the western coast of theIstrian peninsula, in Istria County. The city is almost 2,000 years old; the remains of ancient temples and forums are spread throughout the old city centre. The most valuable and recognizable cultural and historical monument is theEuphrasian Basilica, present on UNESCO World Heritage List, dating back to the 6th century.
Today the city is a vibrant and modern place balancing perfectly between history and present. The language spoken in Poreč is Croatian, but due to its history, it is not unusual to hear Italian language on the streets. Last recorded number of Poreč population has shown that there are around 16,700 inhabitants; their main occupation includes olive and fruit growing, fishing and tourism.
Poreč is apopular tourist destinationfamous for its beautiful natural landscape, a long tradition in tourism and several well-equipped tourist resorts. TheMediterranean climatewith mild winters and warm summers makes the city enjoyable to visitors all year round. Summer season is perfect for beach fun, swimming and sunbathing, while in the off-season you can avoid the crowds and enjoy the town peacefully .
A few kilometres outside Novigrad, Istralandia is a large aquapark complex with six pools, including a children’s spray arena, and 15 kinds of slides. Kids can try the Black Kamikaze, Family Rafting and, for toddlers, Crazy Hills. As of 2019, there will be a new feature, Space Combo, offering nearly 200 metres of space adventure in a rubberised vehicle with full visual effects. Other attractions include beach football, beach volleyball, concerts and all kinds of courses and workshops.
Situated on thewest coast of Istria, Rovinj is one of the most popular and most developed tourist resorts inCroatia. The old town is built on the island, which was only connected with the mainland in the 18thcentury. Known as one of the most picturesque and romantic towns on Mediterranean, over the last few decades Rovinj attracts a large number of tourists, most of them faithfully returning year after year. Why do they come back? Maybe it is the breath of past times felt as you walk around old town's cobbled narrow streets. Or is it maybe its 22 islands and islets, the mild Mediterranean climate, carefully designed parks, the tidiness of its streets, the friendliness of the local population or numerous and varied town events. Or all of it!
Rovinj manages to combine, in a very interesting way, its rich tradition with the modern times. As it is also an active fishing port, you can experience the atmosphere of a small fishing village, especially during the popular fishermen’s festivities or at one of the traditional taverns called Spacio (in the past, very popular among fishermen). On the other hand, the town has been developing an exquisite gastronomy and offers a high standard of tourist services in general.
The city at the foot of the Church of St. Euphemia is the favorite gathering place of artists from around the world. Walking down its streets, you'll bump into many art galleries and studios, whilst once a year, in August, you have the possibility to attend the largest open-air exhibition of the Adriatic coast, which takes place in one of the main old-town streets - Grisia.
It is almost impossible to list all Rovinj's attractions, so we suggest visiting it and surrendering to its beauty… We are sure that it will win you over and that sooner or later, you’ll come to visit Rovinj again.
What to see and do in Umag
Although it dates back to the ancient times,Umag has preserved only the Medieval architecture. The remnants of this are seen in the city walls, Venetian villas, picturesque streets… As already mentioned, the Old Town is now on a peninsulawhich was once an island. In the 10thcentury the city walls were built around the settlement and which was connected to the mainland by a drawbridge.
The best preserved buildingis also the oldest one – the west tower which houses the Museum of the City.
In the centre there is a square withthe church of the Assumption of Mary.
A little bit outside Umag, in Savudrija, you can visit the oldest lighthouse in Croatia. It was built in 1818 and there is a legend about its construction. Metternich,an Austrian count, fell in love with a Croatian lady at a Viennese ball so he had this lighthouse built only for her. However, she got ill and never got to see it, so the count decided to never again visit the lighthouse.
In Umag, and some other Istrian cities as well,Sole Fish Days are held every year. This manifestation lasts for a month and is held in restaurants which offer 4 course menus based on common sole, accompanied by excellent Istrian wines and olive oil.
In order to prolong the wellness season,Umag offers the days of wellness, Welldays, which take place during October. Three hotel wellness centres offer special packages which include staying in a comfortable hotel, half-board service and daily entrance to the wellness center.
Music loverscan enjoy the UmagoBlues music festivaland taste some of the local specialties.
Another festival isUmagination which is a festival of electronic musictaking place in Umag for four years.
What Umag is most famous for is theATPCroatian Open Umag tennis tournamentwhich takes place every year in July.
Generally speaking, in terms of sport, there is always something going on in Umag whether it is about tennis, football, golf…

Vad som gör detta boende unikt

Visnjan is located in the western part of Istria, 12 km east-northeast from the city Porec. Its surface spreads on 65 km2 and has about 2,200 inhabitants. The name Visnjan derives probably from the Latin word Vicinianus (meaning : in the hear/close), because, in those days it was the closest property to Porec. The act from the year 1003. is the oldest written document where the name Visnjan is mentioned and by which have been determined the borders of the property of St. Mauro. In the years of B.C., Visnjan was inhabited by the Illyrians, and later by Celts and in ancient times and the Middle Ages, west of Visnjan was known the village Dilian, famuous by its monastery and the church of St. Michael. Visnjan was surroanded and protected by the walls until the 18th century, and it was possible to enter the city only through a large door, built in the Venetian times with thei simbol on top o fit: a lion with an open book. Once, in the vicinity of Visnjan was also passing the old railroad Parenzana.
Due to the large migrations in the past, the population of Visnjan is now very heterogeneous. Visnjan was inhabited by the Celts, Illyrians, Slavs, Venetians, and because of the Turkish conquests in 1500.g., also with Croats from Dalmatia and Bosnia and Herzegovina and the emigration of Italians is significant between 1946. and 1958. after the annexation of Istria to Yugoslavia. In the past few years depopulation of younger people is greater towards the coast, usually for work reasons. The population is mainly engaged in agriculture (olive oil, wine and fruit growing) and catle breeding and tourism.
Like other places settled around the large tourist resorts, Visnjan has an increasing role in the touristic offer of the region. In the very town, but also in the surrounding places, were built or have been renovated a numerous houses and villas with swimming pool, which significantly has increased the capacity and category of accommodation in the Porec area. In Visnjan there is still lot of tourism potential that is ready to be fully exploit, such as hunting and health tourism folllowed by agro tourism.
In the surroandings of Visnjan there are few families engaged in the production of premium wines. One of them is the family Poletti who are dealing with a wine business since 1842. With every sip of their wine you can feel the passion of the devotion which this family has been giving to the grapevines for more than 150 years. We can be free to say that each cup of family Polletti's vine is a new pleasure.
From the other tourist attractions at the Visnjan area, there are several farmhouses and typical taverns where you can taste simple traditional dishes prepared from ecologically grown ingredients. The bicycle paths are connecting this area with Porec, coastal area of istria, central Istria and with attractive Baredine cave, located in half way between Visnjan and Porec. Probably the most famous cycling route that passes through this area is Parenzana (http://www.parenzana.net) . It is a former railway line which once connected Trieste and Porec, representing a „lifeblood“ of the Istrian economy and today makes a remarkable tourist attraction. In very Visnjan the guests can find everything they need for everyday stay, refering to the convenience store, bakery, butcher shop, pizzeria, typical tavern, ATM and an ambulance.
Visnjan is probably best known for its observatory which is famous world-wide after the discovery of the small astronomical objects in the solar system thanks to the Croatian astronomer and enthusiast Korado Korlevic. The new observatory is located in Tican only a few kilometers from Visnjan and represents an important education center for young people and is also an important tourist destination. The mission of the observatory is: "To motivate, educate and support children, teachers, parents to express their talents, and to grow into experts, educators and leaders capable of creating and managing the world to come."
