Location:
Maison Nourat is located amidst rolling hills and farmland in rural Provence, just 5km away from the town of Saint-Rémy-de-Provence. Here you can enjoy a combination of peaceful days in the country and days sightseeing in town.
The closest amenities are just 5km away from the house in the town of Saint-Rémy-de-Provence. The town has been settled for thousands of years and has a rich history which is reflected in its architecture; look out for Roman monuments and ruins, stunning Renaissance facades and grand homes from the 18th century. A great way to get to know the town is to take a guided tour and there are a few to choose from including history tours, tours by electric bike and also wine tours which will take you out of town to local wineries. Another much-loved tour is one based on Vincent van Gogh which will take you to places which inspired the artists paintings which he produced while living here.
After the tour you could head over to Saint-Paul-de-Mausole monastery where Van Gogh lived. The incredible 11th-century monastery and grounds are well worth a visit. Just opposite the monastery you can also visit a fascinating archaeological site which is the ruins of the former Roman town of Glanum, a once thriving and wealthy town which offers us a glimpse into life for those living here in the 1st century BC. After a busy day of sightseeing, you can pick up groceries in town to cook dinner back at home or dine out in one of the many charming restaurants.
If you would like to visit an authentic Provencal village then why not explore Les Baux-de-Provence which is just 6km away. This enchanting village is located on a rocky outcrop and is a lovely place to spend the day. Wander the ancient streets and look at buildings and historic sites once destroyed by the kingâs armies in the 17th century. Visitors can explore the impressive ruins of the former castle plus 20 more historical attractions such as the Church of St-Vincent. With amazing views of the surrounding valleys and fields, you should definitely enjoy dinner with a view in the square.
Avignon, which is known as the city of art and culture, is just 26km away by car and is a must-see place! It has a wealth of brilliant museums, galleries and historic attractions such as the staggering gothic palace which is the former home of the popes who lived here in the 14th century. If you are visiting in July you will be able to join in the events of the performing arts festival where you will find theatrical events and shows popping up all over the city.
This area really lends itself to getting outside in nature and making the most of the gorgeous natural surroundings. Whether you like walking, cycling or even exploring by horseback there is plenty to see in this picture-postcard landscape.
9km away in the Alpilles mountain range is a local attraction which you may want to add to your itinerary. It is called Le Rocher des Deux Trous, which means the rock with two holes. A hike of 4km through a woodland will bring you out at this dramatic rock which offers unrivalled views through the holes. Van Gogh famously painted this scene when staying in the area. There are plenty of other natural sites you can visit nearby including Lac de Peirou and local nature reserves which are ideal picnic locations.
