Air conditioning is not common on Kauai, and generally not necessary as the climate is temperate (though humid). On those rare occasions when the tradewinds are not blowing, you'll definitely feel how warm and muggy it gets, but thankfully the tradewinds blow almost constantly. We are very clear in our description about the unit having only partial air conditioning and urge guests to read the description to be certain the property will meet their needs and to ensure realistic expectations. From description: "The downstairs master suite is air-conditioned for your comfort. The upstairs is island breeze cooled, no AC."

Our mattresses are on the softer side, which might not be everyone's preference, but we'll definitely check them out for any issues. You’re right about the AC—it's only in the downstairs bedroom, just as we mention in the description: "Partially Air Conditioned (downstairs master bedroom)." Usually, the tradewinds keep things comfortable, but on those rare occasions when they die down, it can get muggy. Fans do help, but nothing beats those refreshing tradewinds!

We have since repaired the air-conditioning unit with the appropriate parts, and we regret that our communication during the repair process was inadequate. While the listing clearly states that this unit is only partially air-conditioned in the master suite, we understand that having this amenity unavailable for your stay is a serious inconvenience. We apologize for making it seem as though we expected you to fix the smoke alarm in the basement. Our suggestion was merely that you were welcome to remove the batteries to immediately stop the disruptive noise before our maintenance team made their way to the property. We hope to have the opportunity to provide you with an updated experience more typical of our services in the future, and we're wishing you safe travels on your next adventures. Aloha

We wish this guest had read the entire description which clearly explains that only the downstairs is air-conditioned. We try to be as informative as possible because surprises are not to anyone's benefit. Most of our guests are perfectly comfortable without AC but do enjoy being able to sleep cool. As this guest is aware, and in fairness ought to have mentioned, the key was out of the lockbox because maintenance was making a extra copies so they wouldn't have just the one key, and they brought the keys to them within a few minutes. We didn't detect any unusual odors but nonetheless we aired it thoroughly, cleaned the rugs, and re-washed all the bedding, towels, curtains, pillow covers etc.
