The guests’ comments about being accused of checking out late resulted from a misunderstanding. After checkout, we remotely found the heating still running and switched it off, but it restarted 30 minutes later. As it was Saturday and our housekeeper’s day off, we thought the guests might still be at the property. They later said they had checked out “that morning.” Because they were already in the United States, their morning corresponded to the correct checkout day in New Zealand, but we did not know this at the time leaving us to believe they had stayed an extra night. When I questioned the apparent late checkout, the conversation became tense, which likely contributed to the low four-star review. The car is serviced annually, and the guests were correct that the brakes required attention; this has since been rectified.
