Stugan (3 sovrum, 2 badrum) rymmer 6 personer.
Casa do Celeiro upptäcktes av dess arkitekt / konstnärsägare 1980. Det var en ruin som hade varit stallen / ladugården i ett "quinta" (herrgård och gård). De viktigaste attraktionerna på platsen var dess utsikt över Serra och havet och dess avskildhet och intimitet på grund av att det var en innergård inbyggd i en kulle. Huset idag har samma grundformat men passar nu för självhushållsgrupper på upp till 6. Det finns en 8m dia. pool högst upp på fastigheten och en stenterrass med pergola och stor trädgård framför stugan. Stugan har 3 sovrum, 2 badrum, ett stort sit-in vinterträdgård på övre plan med utsikt mot en privat innergård. Köket / vardagsrummet ligger på bottenvåningen. Stugan som rymmer upp till 6 vuxna är prissatt på prislistan. Huset är bekvämt inredda och även om det inte är lyxigt är det charmigt och bekvämt. Den lugna miljön, fantastisk utsikt över havet och kullarna och närheten till Almoçageme den lokala byn gör denna fastighet till en magnifik reträtt.

Konstkurser: Ägarna bor på plats i separata kvarter. De arbetar som konstnärer och erbjuder korta kurser då och då. Gäster kan vara intresserade av att delta i rit- och målnings- eller etsningskurser och uppmuntras att ange sitt intresse när de bokar.
Mary är en målare och en skrivare. Be ägarna om deras webbplats för mer information / foton av hus, kurser och område.
Piano: det finns ett gammalt upprätt piano (Hoffmann) i stugan i vardagsrummet, som även om det är lite avsmält och med slitna tangenter är helt ok för synläsning och komposition men inte för skäl.

Ägarnas bakgrund: Alan som är brittisk arbetade som arkitekt i London på BDP (Building Design Partnership). Han kvalificerade sig vid AA (Architectural Association). När han flyttade till Portugal öppnade han ett arkitektkontor i Cascais 1980. Han gick i pension 1992. Han målar nu akvareller och designer och skapar skulpturer och smycken. Mary, amerikan, arbetade också som arkitekt, efter att ha avslutat sitt examensbevis på Central London Poly (nu Westminster College). Hon har också examen inom konsthistoria, internationell utbildning och målning och etsning. Hon var chef för konstavdelningen i St. Julians skola i Lissabon och fortsätter att undervisa på deltid. Hon och Alan ställer ut sitt arbete regelbundet.

Golf, tennis, stränder: Flera golfbanor inom 20 minuters bilresa. Beloura anses vara den bästa golfbanan för turister eftersom det har en mer öppen och vänlig atmosfär. Tennis och vattensporter inom 10 minuter. 3 stränder inom 5-10 minuters bilresa: Praias (stranden) das Maças, Adraga och Grande har alla restauranger och kaféer vid vattnet / Guincho-stranden (15 minuters bilresa) har internationell surfing / vindsurfing och utmärkta marknadsrestauranger / kan rekommendera en surfing skola

A Biker's Paradise
En av de största fördelarna med att placera vårt hus är att det ligger precis i Serra de Sintra med fantastisk utsikt upp och ner på Lissabon-kusten. För en mountainbiker är detta mycket fördelaktigt eftersom vi är vid ingången till en av bergsvägarna så att du kan rida direkt in i Serra. Från denna väg finns det många grusvägar som tar dig djupare in i Serra. En hund och en katt i lokalerna.

Great place for a relaxed stay

We had a lovely week here as a family with two boys (11 & 9). The pool is large and deep with great views both from there and from the outdoor table at the front of the house - a great spot for lazy days without needing to go out. There's great walking in the hills behind the house and the location is near plenty of interesting places. Mary is a very welcoming host and had loads of good suggestions for us. We'd definitely recommend here for others - families or couples.

Fantastic location!

We had a wonderful week. The house has so much to offer. Wondeful beds. There are beautiful paintings everywhere, made by Maru and her husband. Mary is a lovely hostess. She can give you a lot of tips. The swimmingpool is wonderfully private. This location is highly recommended.

Picturesque, unique spot in a fantastic location

Had an amazing time in this historic and artistic home. Beautiful ocean views, gardens, and pool. Great for relaxing afternoons and watching shooting stars at night. There are many beaches, villages, and monuments within a 15 km radius. We stayed for two weeks and still didn't see everything! Mary is a very welcoming host and keen to share her love of the arts. Highly recommend this property for families!

Great property, lovely host

Spent a fabulous 2 weeks at Mary's property. The house is perfectly located to explore the area and had everything we needed. The photos don't do the place justice. Mary is the perfect host, she readily answered all of our questions (we chose to communicate by WhatsApp) but otherwise left us to it. The way the house is configured lends itself to families as well as couples travelling together.

Spectacular hilltop rental near Sintra

If you are looking for a spacious hilltop retreat with spectacular views of the sea, only 45 mins from Lisbon and close to all the cultural and natural riches Sintra has to offer (palaces, castles, parks, great Portuguese food, beaches, trails), look no further than Casa do Celeiro. Two architects/artists have lavished their gifts on this beautiful converted farmhouse and stable, and filled it with their artwork. I've been here and there with summer rentals, but this place is simply a jewel. Our family (including 3 teens) had a delightful time; I can't recommend it highly enough.

Lovely spacious house on a great spot

We rented the house for a week. First we stayed with 4 people, later on 2 people joined us so we stayed with 6. It's a spacious house with multi levels outside. The view from the terrace on front, looking on the Atlantic ocean, is lovely. The garden up front is peacebringing. At the back there are several terraces and the swimminpool. Nice round pool with fresh water. We used it every day. The location is great to discover the middle part of portugal. We rented a car and visited Lissabon twice, Cascais twice and Sintra once. We drove to the supermarket on daily basis to get fresh fruit, bread etc. just 5 minutes by car. Well, our conclusion: we give this villa 5 starts at least. Great time! Mary and Allen, thanks for the hospitality and privicy. All the best and maybe we'll meet again.

Rustic cottage with ocean view near Sintra

Located up on a high hill with jaw dropping views of the ocean, this is a lovely rustic cottage that was a farmer’s home in times past. Mary and her husband restored the property 40 years ago and graciously rent the cottage which is next to their home. If you want a traditional home in the hills of Sintra, this is for you. If you need sleek and modern, keep looking. The cottage is about an hour drive from Lisbon airport, up a narrow winding (beautiful) road and less than 30 minutes from the town in Sintra. There are numerous beaches a short drive from the house. The cottage has two bedrooms upstairs (2 single beds each) with a shared bathroom and sunroom. The ground floor has a well stocked country kitchen and small sitting area with a piano, lots of books and games. There is a washing machine and dishwasher. Down about 2 stairs from the kitchen is a bedroom (Queen) with a bathroom. The surrounding woods are beautiful with a small hiking path to the summit. We loved the nearby town of Cascais—beaches food shopping wild coastline. Excellent communication with the owners.

Wonderful stay in an idyllic retreat

We (two adults and two children, age 8 and 9) just returned from a nearly 2 week stay in Mary and Alan's beautiful home. The setting is picture-perfect and the photos do not adequately capture the gorgeous landscaping and special setting: it is high up on a hill (very steep driveway!) with spectacular views of the ocean from virtually every window. Sunsets are incredible, and we often enjoyed a glass of wine on the outside terrace (under a grape arbor) while watching them. The aerial photo gives a sense of the terraced quality of the property. Our boys particularly liked the garden/yard level (first floor of the house with the outdoor terrace) where they played with the sweet dog Alma. They also loved the daily swims in the pool (third level) -- the pool and gardens surrounding it are lovely and this level has spectacular views as well. The house is comfortable and has all amenities needed and was very clean. Mary thoughtfully stocked the kitchen with basics before our arrival. She was incredibly helpful and responsive throughout our stay with great suggestions and ideas. We also arranged for Mary to give a private drawing lesson to our sons, and we'll treasure the drawings they did. Mary's artwork adorns the house, and we purchased a beautiful print of the mountains to remind us of our stay. The location is incredibly well situated for getting to beaches, exploring Sintra and Cascais (we went back to both a few times). Colares and Almocageme are perfect small towns for basics -- several good bars and restaurants, good grocery stores (don't let the size of the one in Almocageme fool you -- it's well priced and stocked!). One of our favorite meals at home included the delicious grilled chicken (available on the main square in Almocageme or next to the grocery store in Colares.) And of course lots of vino verdhe! The farmer's market in Almocageme was terrific as well (Saturday / Sunday). We hiked on the trail that begins on the property and while the first part of the passage is fairly overgrown, it opens up to a nice trail that is shaded and offers a lovely walk for the whole family. A friend came for the last week and stayed in the downstairs bedroom (of the main cottage, not the annex). It is a private set up and quite separate from the upstairs bedrooms where we stayed. We've stayed in many rental homes and this one is quite special -- both the place and the lovely host. We can't recommend it more!

Fantastischer Aufenthalt / Workcation

Wir waren für vier Wochen im November für eine Mischung aus Arbeit und Urlaub in dem Anwesen. Die Gegend mit der Mischung aus Stränden und dem Nationalpark mit seinen "verwunschenen Wäldern" ist magisch. Mary war jederzeit ansprechbar und hat sich um alles direkt gekümmert. Jederzeit wieder!

Heerlijk huis op prachtige locatie!

Wij verbleven met opa en oma en onze twee jongens in het knusse huis. Het was niet heel warm toen we aankwamen en dus had Mary, onze host, de haard voor ons aangemaakt. Een warm ontvangst! Ondanks het niet altijd warme weer genoten onze jongens elke dag van het zwembad en wij van het uitzicht, zittende aan de rand. Je kunt heerlijk wandendelen in de omgeving en bent in een paar auto minuten op de mooiste stranden van Portugal. Onze jongste zoon heeft een kunst klas bij Mary gevolgd en raakt er niet over uitgepraat. Bedankt voor de heerlijke week, Mary!

Great views in rustic setting

Mary war ein rundum aufmerksamer Gastgeber und wir haben uns sehr wohl gefühlt. Pool und Ausblick sind spektakulär, Einrichtung einfach, aber funktional. Ein toller Ausgangspunkt für Hiker und Biker. Die Restauranttips von Mary waren spot on. Danke!

Wunderschöne Unterkunft, prima gelegen und doch in der Natur

Wir haben unseren Aufenthalt als Familie mit zwei Teenagern sehr genossen. Das Cottage ist sehr geräumig mit vielen Rückzugsmöglichkeiten, einem wunderbaren Pool und Sitzplatz mit traumhafter Aussicht. Mary ist sehr gastfreundlich und hilft mit vielen guten Tipps, zB bei der Restaurantauswahl. Wirklich sehr zu empfehlen!

Our 3 weeks 2021 summer stay

The house was exactly as described on the site. Lots of space, with all modern amenities to make life easy. The views are simply breathtaking. From the kitchen window, upper bedrooms and even bathroom you can see the beautiful garden, villages in the distance, coastline, and Atlantic Ocean! The garden is beautiful and the Pool is private with lots of space to relax. Our host Mary was wonderful, respecting our privacy but always available when we had any questions. The great plus we want to mention is the location. All great things of the Lisbon region are so close! 37 minutes’ drive to Lisbon. Several beaches about 8 minutes’ drive away, fantastic lookout points 15 minutes out, Palaces and Sintra less than 20 minutes. At home, you can relax in a country atmosphere, on the other hand if you like to dine out, lots of restaurants no more than 10 minutes’ drive away. So sun, sea and culture and relax. Our three weeks have been wonderful. Hope to come back.

Prachtig huis

Heerlijke dagen gehad in de accomodatie. Het huisje is erg huiselijk, gemoedelijk en knus, muren zijn vol met prachtige kunstwerken gemaakt door de eigenaresse. Ook de omgeving is erg leuk. Colares is een prachtig dorpje met een aantal leuke restaurantjes. Strandjes in de omgeving zijn heel erg mooi. Veel surfers.

traumhafte Lage, sehr nette Gastgeberin, kein Winterquartier

mein Lebensgefährte und ich waren in der 2. Januarwoche da. Es war ein Urlaub mit traumhaften Erlebnissen, aber er hatte auch Schattenseiten. Das Haus ist wirklich sehr, sehr alt, die Wände 1 m dick. Es liegt direkt am Naturpark und auf einem traumhaften Grundstück. Die Sicht auf den Atlantik ist gigantisch. Mary ist ein supernette Gastgeberin, die den Spagat zwischen aufmerksamer Betreuung und Zurückhaltung perfekt beherrscht. Der Parkplatz war nur wenige Meter von der Eingangstür entfernt. Leider waren wir mit dem Haus nicht glücklich, was hauptsächlich daran lag, dass wir zur falschen Jahreszeit da waren. Als wir ankamen war zwar die Heizung (Nachtspeicher) angestellt und im Kaminofen brannte ein Feuer - trotzdem war das Haus ausgekühlt, die Wände klamm, in einem Raum war kurz bevor wir kamen die Wand mit einer Lauge abgewaschen worden, es roch sehr danach. In den Tagen unseres Aufenthaltes wurde das Haus allmählich warm, wir fanden dann einige sehr große, dicke schwarze Spinnen in unserer auf dem Bett liegenden Kleidung im Schlafzimmer. Auf dem Fenstersims dann leider auch Ameisen, die auf unserer Kamera herumkrabbelten. Diese Ameisen fanden sich auch in der Küche. Der Effekt war ein permanentes Unbehagen während der Zeit, die wir im Haus verbracht haben, was wirklich schade war. Unser Urlaub war ansonsten nämlich wirklich schön, wir hatten Glück mit dem Wetter, meist so um die 15 - 18 Grad, wir waren viel unterwegs und es gibt sehr viel dort zu sehen. Wir werden wieder kommen. Wir würden auch wieder zu Mary kommen - wenn Sie uns nach dieser Bewertung noch nimmt :-( , aber nur im Sommer. PS: Liebe Mary, es tut mir leid, dass ich das so deutlich hier schreibe, denn Du bist wirklich nett und eine tolle Gastgeberin. Wir haben Deine Bilder sehr bewundert und waren beeindruckt von Deiner Kreativität. Wir grüßen Dich, C+R

Mary St.George är värd

I grew up in Wisconsin, studied history of art at Connecticut College and then lived and worked in NYC. I moved to the UK where I met my architect husband. I also studied architecture and we moved to Portugal in 1980 to set up an architectural practice. I also taught art at a local British secondary school and now work as an artist and teach in my studio.

Varför värden valde detta boende

We found a 17th ruin (barn and stable) attached to an old 'quinta' (up-market farm) and as architects took our time developing it for our family and now for guests.

Vad som gör detta boende unikt

World Heritage Site (Serra de Sintra), secluded setting with panoramic views of Atlantic and Serra. Close enough to amenities but away from noise and crowds. Converted by owners / architects. Full of paintings, etchings and sculpture. A place for artists to retreat to work or relax. Mary open to teach art students in her studio.

Old upright piano. There is a sturdy Hoffman piano which is fine for sight reading and composing but not for recitals. Slightly out of tune and with worn keys but still fun to play on.

BIRD WATCHERS PARADISE:
One of the advantages of our position in the Serra de Sintra is that we are within easy reach of spotting interesting local birds. Our house is on the edge of the Serra (Pé da Serra, Colares, Sintra) so that one can walk up into the low wooded mountains directly from the house. Some of the local birds in the area include: Sparrow Hawk, Bonelli’s Eagle, Black Swift, Green Woodpecker, Black Cap Warbler, ‘Ferreinha alpina’ among others.
