Adorned with beautiful plane trees, the old town is an inviting place to stroll: pleasant little squares, numerous 17th- and 18th-century town houses, charming fountains, pretty boutiques, lively café terraces, flower, fruit and vegetable markets evoking the colors and fragrances of Provence.
The old town also boasts the Cathédrale Saint-Sauveur and its 12th-13th century cloister, the town hall with its square and clock tower, the romantic Place d'Albertas, and museums such as the Musée du Vieil Aix, the Musée d'Histoire Naturelle and the Atelier Paul Cézanne.
The city has also been famous for its thermal baths since Roman times, offering hydrotherapy cures. Aix-en-Provence also offers a wide range of events, including the Festival International d'Art Lyrique (baroque music and Mozart operas), the FĂȘte de l'Eau and Danse Ă Aix, a contemporary dance festival.
