The landscape is diverse with dunes, bogs, heath, wet meadows, deciduous and coniferous forests and reed areas. The Steinhuder Meer has become a popular center especially for kitesurfing. In season there are over 90 sailing regattas at the Steinhuder Meer. The Steinhuder Meer is also known for the so-called "emigrants" - over 100 year old sailing boats that only exist here. Swimming and bathing in the lake is allowed and is extra fun in healthy moor water. The focal point is the artificial, 35,000 square meter bathing island in Steinhude in the south with a sandy beach and sunbathing areas. The guarded bathing beach "White Dune" on the north shore in Mardorf lures. The surf beach is also nearby.
