Omgiven av sju tunnland gräsmattor, park och skog, är Carraigin Castle en idyllisk stuga i en vacker miljö vid stranden av Lough Corrib, en av Irlands största sjöar, känd för sin öring och dess mångfald av pittoreska öar. Från slottet kan man njuta av båtliv och fiske på sjön, vandring, ridning och sightseeing hela Galway och Mayo, eller bara koppla av vid öppna spisen och begrunda charm och enkla storhet i denna gamla bostad, en sällsynt och vackert exempel på en befäst medeltida "hall house".

Familjegrupper eller nära vänner kommer att älska den avslappnade atmosfären i detta autentiska 13-talet herrgård, som har restaurerats av den nuvarande ägaren efter tynar bort i mer än två århundraden som en smula, taklösa ruin. Carraigin kyrka-liknande struktur sitter på en ökning nås genom en allé över den trädkantade Pleasure Ground. Den antika utseende, spik-dubbade dörr på bottenvåningen, ofta misstas för en autentisk antiken, gjordes faktiskt av ägaren under byggnadens restaurering på 1970-talet. Runt hörnet, leder en imponerande stentrappa till en annan storslagen entré, i den höga, ek-strålade Great Hall med ett brett, sten välvda spis som ger en tröstande doft av torv och trä-rök.

The Great Hall är den centrala vardagsrum och matsal i slottet. Den har en blandning av gammal ek och bekväma moderna möbler som omger välkomnande härd. Dess vita väggar i stor utsträckning inredda med konst, inklusive gobelänger, mässing gnugga porträtt av gamla kungar och riddare och en magnifik triptyk med ett Galway Galleon (som på den stadens vapen). Det finns en liten men välutrustat kök intill med utsikt över de höga träden i Pleasure Ground.

På samma nivå som Hall är en ek strålade sovrum med en king size-säng och badrum. En stentrappa vindar upp över denna sovrummet till en familj loft rum med utsikt över Stora salen. Från båda dessa rum andra våningen kan du promenera ut på slottet räcken med fantastisk utsikt över Lough Corrib och kullarna i Connemara och Mayo, och även de av Clare, på andra sidan av Galway Bay.

Resten av er sova i fyra mysiga "Valv" på bottenvåningen nedan, deras väggar kantas också med gobelänger och andra konstverk. The Vaults har mycket pittoreska charm med sina ek-timrade partitioner, valv och välvda tak, och de fungerar om du känner varandra väl som rummen leder i varandra. Vault I den största av de fyra, sover två i våningssängar och har en rättvis och medelstora arbets bord och stolar för upptagna tonåringar och en mini-soffa för en eller två i fönstret embrasure. Vault II (från nr 1) har en dubbelsäng och en liknande fönsterplats. Vault III (också av nr 1) har en dubbelsäng och en enkelsäng och en fönsterplats. Vault III i sin tur ger tillgång till Vault IV, ett litet enkelrum med en tre-ljus gotiska fönster ser på den stående sten solur på gräsmattan.

Dream Come True!

This property was AMAZING!!!! It was a dream come true, as we have always wanted to stay in a castle. My son was studying abroad in Galway from America, and we did not want to leave him on our Thanksgiving holiday. We ended up finding this property and surprised the kids with it. The property exceeded any picture and was so cozy and grand at the same time. There was a lot of love put into the renovation and how it is decorated. It felt authentic and like home at the same time. Our teenage kids loved exploring the castle and the property and we played many games in the great room. The kids loved making the fire every day and being together. Perhaps what was even better than the castle were the people who support it. From Anne, the owner, to Geraldine the property manager, to Tina, the caterer, they are all wonderful and beyond helpful! When my son's housing plans fell through, Anne was helpful with locating reliable people in the town. When our rental cars were not given to us, Geraldine went above and beyond helping us to find car service and even bringing us to the grocery store to stock up on food. Geraldine was such a lovely presence and made everything special during our entire stay. Also, Tina catered two meals for us, and both were outstanding!!!! We feasted on them for days! I can't say enough about the wonderful treatment and beautiful accommodation. Our family felt as if it was truly an Irish blessing. We hope to be back in the future!

Amazing restored castle

So glad the owners had the vision and fortitude to restore this castle from crumbling ruins to what it is today, and allow others to experience staying in an actual private castle. The grounds and view of the lake (especially from the parapets) were beautiful! Many interesting staircases, doors, books and sunlit window seats. The large fireplace and dining table were great for gathering around. Definitely a memorable stay.

Carraigin Castle - ein unvergessliches Erlebnis

Für unsere erste Irlandreise durften wir eine Woche in Carraigin Castle verbringen. Wir, das sind 2 Familien mit je einem Kind (11 Jahre). Es war für uns alle ein unvergessliches Erlebnis. Wir fühlten uns sehr wohl. Die Burg ist super ausgestattet - es hat nichts gefehlt. Die Küche ist zwar klein, aber alles notwendige ist da. Leider hatte Tina keine Zeit. Sonst hätten wir uns gerne am ersten Abend von ihr bewirten lassen. Die Begrüßung durch Geraldine ist sehr herzlich. David hat unseren Männern eine kompetente Einweisung für das Boot gegeben so dass wir damit alleine fahren konnten. Geraldine und David bleibt so wie ihr seid - herzlich und bodenständig. Wer gerne stilecht in Irland übernachten möchte, bitte nicht lange überlegen, sondern einfach Carraigin Castle buchen.

Magical place

What a joy it was for our family to stay in Carraigin Castle. The grandchildren loved the "cell" bedrooms, and we all loved the great room with its giant fireplace. From the charming reading nooks, we looked out on the lake or the fields with sheep. Tina provided delicious meals, while David gave us an entertaining boat ride! The owners were also so helpful, with tips on places to visit. Highly recommended!

Carraigin Castle

The Carraigin Castle and grounds are a special place. Once in ruins, the new owner lovingly and meticulously restored the Castle to its original glory (and added running water and electricity). Our party of ten (ages 9-78) enjoyed our stay immensely. The owners are very hospitable and shared with us the history of the site. As descendants of George Staunton on my mother's side, the time at the Castle and at Cargin Cemetery held special meaning for us. Geraldine is a delightful housekeeper. We recommend that you retain Tina to cater your first meal (an enormous feast) as the leftovers (along with soda bread, scones and fruit) will fill your party for several days. We would have liked to take the boat out onto Lough Corrib but some flight cancellations affected our opportunity to use the boat. The white castle, verdant green landscaping, and the reflection of the cloudy, blue sky on the lake is beautiful and peaceful. We hope to return again for a longer stay.

A gift from a true Templar.

I want to let everyone know who thinks of not staying at this 13th Century Grand Norman Castle, you're out of your mind! My family stayed a few days and loved the great people, Geraldine, JT, and David. They were the best. They were there at anytime with the best Irish smiles and hospitality. Well, the Castle is AMAZING!! The Castle is absolutely built to Norman Architectural plans, and there are treasures everywhere in the construction, and with the Deco inside. Throughout the Castle, many treasures are awaiting your stay! Our family loved every minute and every experience that we had and would of stayed longer, but this is a place that everyone should visit. I Tip My "Texan Hat" to those who are involved in letting my family stay. The memories built there together will out live any other family adventures. I would tell you more, but I need to book another stay! Before you:) Thank you to Geraldine, JT, and David!!! see you soon, hopefully. Thank you JM-Sir, you are a great MAN!

An Ideal and Dream Come True Visit

Perfection is just one word to describe our stay! Others would be superb accommodations, wonderful scenery, delightful local flavor, and superior guest relations! Geraldine Egan is a wonderful manager and made us feel right at home. She was thoughtful and considerate and took care of us in splendid fashion. The meal awaiting us upon our arrival was a fabulous spread prepared by the talented Tina Matthews. The entire visit was such a great experience, one that made our hearts smile.

Amazing Castle

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay here. The castle and grounds are even better than the photos. It was chilly enough to use the fireplace which added to the fun. Take advantage of Tina's prepared meal for your first night. We also went out on the lake with David. Another great experience. We would definitely stay again.

AMAZING castle stay

What an incredible stay!!! Very authentic--loved to see all the work and effort that went into lovingly restoring this castle. We had an amazing stay. The grounds are also amazing as is the opportunity to go out on Lake. The dinner ( that you can order) the first night is so incredible and so generous we ate from it for days afterwords. It was a dream vacation for my 60th birthday in the land of my birth and it was worth every penny! An excellent stay for grownups and younger ones alike!!!

Beautiful site and lovely people

Carraigin Castle: Our family stayed one week at the castle and we absolutely loved the premises with the access to the lake and the stunning view! Annemarie had already provided us with useful informations about what not to miss during our stay in advance via email so that we were well prepared. When we arrived Geraldine gave us a warm welcome and showed us around in the castle explaining everything we needed to know, she also responded quickly to the questions we had during our stay. Since we read so much praise about Tina‘s food we asked her to cater for us on the first evening - and it was amazing! Some of the dishes lasted several days - and even then they were as tasty as on the first day! Thanks to David‘s perfect introduction to the boat we were able to drive around on the lake which we totally enjoyed. We also received additional great advice from his family and Tina where to go while being in this part of Ireland so that we saw some impressive places away from the crowds. Therefore thanks to everyone involved!

Even Better Than We Could Have Hoped!

Everything about our castle experience exceeded expectations. The beautiful pictures don't do the property justice. The view in every direction is picturesque, the grounds are beautifully maintained, and the interior was a unique delight. Geraldine gave us a warm welcome with a tour and provided nibbles (bread, fruit, crackers) that lasted for days. We took the advice of other reviews and had our first night catered by Tina which provided not only a delicious meal, but leftovers for days, and after that, still enough to make ourselves a stew. David gave us a tour of the lake on the fishing boat that is provided. Like everyone we encountered, he was friendly and informative. The interior was plenty spacious for our group of 8. There are a total of ten beds with 4 of them being queens (?) and very comfortable. My youngest daughter loved the small room in the "tower." Any questions or issues that came up were handled promptly (Geraldine lives close by). Everyone was delighted with our stay. I can't say enough good things about the experience!

Everything we hoped for!

We can't say enough about our experience with the host, her staff, and the property. We booked the castle six months in advance and Annemarie was available to promptly assist the entire time. Communication was easy and friendly. We had issues with a flight cancellation, which caused us to miss out on an entire day of our Ireland trip. Annmarie asked us for a grocery list and had the food waiting for us at the castle. The castle was lovely! It was such a unique accommodation experience. We were sad to leave! Many thanks to Geradline (housekeeper), her husband, and David Scully (boatman) for their hospitality! Please book this castle property! You won't regret it.

Unique and beautiful stay

It's been a few weeks since we returned from Ireland, and we still can't get over it. We stayed at the castle for a week, and it was a wonderful home base for day trips to all of southwest Ireland. My only wish is that we had reserved a day to just hang out at the castle and enjoy it before heading home. The owners were responsive and clearly take pride in their property, Geraldine the housekeeper was lovely (as was Bob the dog who made a welcome appearance), the boat guide (whose name I just forgot), and we enjoyed the dinner from Tina. However, we felt bad needing to throw away so many leftovers, so perhaps try to request LESS food unless you know that you'll be around for leftovers. Next time I'd also bring a hammock to hang and laze in the amazing forest area. We didn't realize how beautiful the total setting is for the castle, with landscaping, forests, and a giant lake. 10/10 would recommend staying here.

Best Birthday Location EVER!!

Carraigin Castle is magical. One night in and I was looking to book again for next year!! Warm and cosy with all manner of nooks and crannies to explore and escape to. Absolutely loved it.

Tayler - Mekayla Birthday Extravaganza

What a spectacular experience we had. It was agreed upon by our group, that Carraigin Castle holds a very unique, inviting, and warm energy. The history and design was exactly what we hoped for, with it being most of our 1st trips to the Irish countryside. The castle held 10 people (1 couple and 8 single adults) comfortably to sleep, and a dinner party of 21 people total. Geraldine was quite responsive and delightful, as well as Tina, who provided all the catering for the dinner. Our only wish is that we had more time to stay! We hope to return in the summer at some point, as the grounds were equally as enchanting! To have an opportunity to use the boat on the lake would be a dream. Highly recommend it if the time of year allows it. Overall, everyone was extremely pleased with this castle. It was just the right amount of charm in every way.

Family Christmas Trip

We had a fabulous time at Carraigin Castle. This was our family trip to Ireland. The castle was beautiful it was even decorated with Christmas decorations, including a tree! The history of this building is fascinating. A lovely relaxing time was shared by the entire family!

Most Amazing stay EvEr!!!

My family and I spend Christmas 2022 at the castle. Annemarie was so gracious and helpful leading up to the stay. Tina is an absolute magician in the kitchen. She provided a full dinner for us (per our request and cost), as well as Christmas Dinner. I had additional personalized request that they made happen as well. Thank you for the memories and we look forward to returning.

Pure magic!

THE CASTLE! What a dream!!! While I won’t be able to give this place the level of love and adoration it deserves in a review, I’m going to do my best. Just book it! You have to see it and experience it for yourself. The magic began as we pulled into the drive to be met by the lovely Geraldine. This woman! So kind, helpful and welcoming. She was there to greet us, show us everything we needed to know about the castle and ensure we had a warm fire burning on our arrival. She was available and quick to respond to any questions we had. Simply put, she’s the best! She returned later with Tina to deliver the home cooked meal that we’d arranged for our first night. Do yourselves a favor and have Tina cook for you. You won’t regret it. The food was INCREDIBLE and we truly had enough left over to eat on for the remainder of our stay. The accommodations are just right. You truly have everything you need. A few people have mentioned how small the kitchen is. That is true, but you have literally every utensil, pot, plate, mug, etc that you could possibly need and there is plenty of room at the dining table for everyone. The beds are warm and cozy. The bath water is hot. The views are spectacular. On that note…. Explore! This place is like stepping into a fairytale. We spent so much time just exploring the castle inside and out. The views from inside are stunning. The views from outside are absolutely unreal. Take a morning walk, sit by the water, explore the woods behind the castle, breathe in the fresh air. This place is MAGICAL!

AMAZING!

This place is even better than in the pictures! Geraldine, who is absolutely wonderful, met us on site to help walk us through how everything works and provided fantastic insight on places around town for our group to do. AnneMarie was also just as wonderful with her communication before hand to get everything set up and planned. The whole stay from beginning to end was perfect and we couldn’t have asked for anything better!!!

Our visit to carraigin castle

We were a party of 3 for 3 nights. From the beginning to the end it was an excellent stay. Anne helped us get started with the rental, Geraldine met us at the property and Tina catered in a dinner for us. All three ladies are excellent at what they do and really made the stay a lot of fun. Be warned if Tina caters a meal you will have enough for several days and it is excellent! The castle itself is stunning we loved being able to spread out and enjoy the fire in the great room and our beds were very comfortable. I highly recommend staying at the castle it’s a fabulous experience and would be great for kids too.

Magical Vacation

Somewhat indescribable. The castle itself is vibrating love from the devotion to its restoration, the people who have made it so incredibly special and the energy from folks who've inhabited, visited for the last 700 years. The gorgeous views, singing birds, and buzzing from the wildflowers are still with me. I'm not sure I've ever slept so fitfully with those 5+ ft thick walls, lovely quiet evenings. I hope to go back!

A little peace of paradise

Carraigin was FANTASTIC!!!!! We took full advantage of all there was to offer. Smooth check in with Geraldine, great experience on the loch with David and we CANNOT say enough about Tina! Her meal was GREAT! We had chicken, beef and salmon. She even made a birthday cake for us! Lots of space, beds were comfy. Washer and dryer are a plus, kitchen is small but VERY workable! Amazing views and quite peaceful.
