Welcome to The Apiary in downtown Excelsior’s historic "Beehive". This luxurious , with a modern-bohemian vibe, resides in a recently renovated 1857 historical landmark that was the town's first 2-story structure. Steps away from Lake Minnetonka and Excelsior Village, you can enjoy The Apiary's private patio, fire pit, and tranquil grill/chill area. Then, walk up the street and experience lake life at Excelsior's unique restaurants, local shops, and vibrant waterfront community.
The space
The Apiary is a spacious one-bedroom apartment nestled in the heart of downtown Excelsior, MN. Discover the allure of the historic landmark known as the Beehive. Lovingly restored, offering you a tranquil retreat in a vibrant lakeside community.
Dating back to 1857, the Beehive proudly stands as Excelsior’s first two-story building. Throughout its renovation, I was especially mindful of honoring and preserving the integrity of its past while creating a lasting union with a modern future. Original beams, brick, and gorgeous textural stone walls were exposed, complemented by large expanses of glass, clean modern lines, wrapping the new addition in charred cedar (using the ancient Japanese technique Shou Sugi Ban).
Greeted by a spacious private patio, a serene space invites you into airy, open-plan living. Luxury finishes and ample natural light combined to embrace you in a warm and welcoming boho vibe. The fully equipped kitchen caters to your culinary needs, while the dining room hutch stands at the ready; stocked with all the essentials to whip up a favorite cocktail or decant a bottle of wine. Indulge a little with the popcorn and ‘smores fixings provided, help yourself to firewood, and venture out to enjoy an evening fireside. Just beyond, the Grill & Chill patio awaits. So grab a book from the well-stocked shelves, and unwind in the hammock while your favorite kabobs grill to perfection.
On rainy days, select from a wall of countless games/puzzles or settle into the expansive sofa, queue up a movie, and enjoy time with loved ones. If a little work is called for – no worries, I've got you covered with free Wi-Fi and a dedicated workspace.

The Apiary entrance is located in the backyard. Upon arrival, either park in the driveway spot indicated in your Welcome Guide for direct access, or walk around to the back of the building via the temporary gravel alleyway to the right of the building. The Apiary is unit #3.
During your stay, we want you to feel right at home, and that's why we're delighted to let you know that you have unrestricted access to the whole unit. This includes the spacious patio, the inviting backyard, and all the wonderful amenities it offers, such as the fire pit and the "Grill and Chill" area. So, go ahead, make yourself comfortable, and enjoy the full experience of our retreat.
Other things to note
Please note that there are two approximately 2-inch tall steps in The Apiary unit. One is located at the entrance to the hallway, and the other at the entrance to the bedroom. Kindly exercise caution when moving around to ensure a safe and comfortable stay.
In addition to a ductless split style A/C unit, there is also a ceiling fan in the bedroom along with 2 circulating fans in the unit.
There is a large construction project next door that runs M-F 7:30 am to 3:00 pm. The weekday price is reflective of this.
