Historic 1911 Queen Anne Victorian overlooking Head Harbor on Isle au Haut
The Fogline at Head Harbor— A historic 1911 Queen Anne Victorian overlooking Head Harbor on Isle au Haut, surrounded by Acadia National Park. Nearly every room offers ocean views. Enjoy trails, kayaking, and ocean and freshwater swimming just steps away. Thoughtfully restored for Summer 2026 — see mock photos for the design. Accessible by mailboat or private mooring, with complimentary island vehicle provided.
The Fogline blends historic Maine camp heritage with refined, modern comfort.
The space
Commanding the corner of beloved Head Harbor, this oceanfront Queen Anne Victorian offers sweeping views of sea, sky, and peninsula. Nearly every room looks out over a sandy beach and the tranquil harbor. Built in 1911 for renowned fisherman Gooden Grant, the home is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and stands among the island’s most iconic landmarks.
The Fogline features a gracious white-railed porch overlooking the harbor and a charming boathouse at the water’s edge, which doubles as an outdoor dining area for large groups. One of its most distinctive details is the octagonal turret, home to the primary bedroom — a light-filled perch above the sea. Inside, the home retains original wood floors, exceptional wainscoting, and other period details from its early 20th-century craftsmanship.
The Fogline’s kitchen is designed for people who love to cook — a warm, light-filled space equipped with high-quality cookware, sharp professional knives, durable prep tools, and coordinated stoneware and glassware that elevate every meal.
Everything has been curated with care: premium stainless cookware, cast-iron pieces for slow cooking and roasting, elegant serving bowls and platters, and a cohesive suite of tableware that feels refined and timeless.
Thoughtful touches like well-balanced utensils, quality cutting boards, and soft-toned small appliances make preparing meals intuitive and enjoyable. Whether you’re cooking lobster, baking something simple, or hosting a long dinner with friends, the kitchen is equipped to support real cooking, not just vacation basics.
This is a space meant for gathering — for big meals, slow breakfasts, and the kind of everyday rituals that linger in memory.
The spacious living room is framed by four large windows overlooking the ocean. Upstairs, two guest bedrooms and the turreted primary suite capture the sunrise and shifting coastal light. A fenced-in garden off the porch includes a workspace and sink, perfect for cleaning vegetables, arranging flowers, or preparing the day’s catch.
The Fogline is currently undergoing a thoughtful renovation, blending the home’s historic charm with refined, coastal Maine interiors — all in time for the Summer 2026 season. To get a sense of the design vision, please see the mock photos provided in the listing, which illustrate the completed interiors.
Historic Island Details — Sustainable Toilet System
The Fogline uses a high-quality, modern composting toilet system instead of a septic. It’s odor-free, exceptionally clean, and truer to the heritage of Maine’s island camps. Most guests find it easier and more hygienic than a standard flush toilet.
Historic Island Details — Boathouse Loft Bedroom
The fourth bedroom is a charming boathouse loft accessed by ladder — ideal for kids, teens, and healthy adults who enjoy a bit of adventure. Think of it as a cozy, camp-style nook with beautiful morning light.
Guest access
Guests have access to the main house and boathouse, as well as the private beach
Other things to note
Welcome to The Fogline at Gooden Grant — a timeless oceanfront retreat where history, beauty, and stillness converge on Isle au Haut.
Nature & Surroundings
The property borders a 72-acre nature preserve, part of Acadia National Park, offering direct access to serene trails through spruce forest, meadows, and rugged coastline. From the harbor, you can launch a kayak or wander the beach in search of sea glass and shells.
Just a five-minute walk away, Long Pond invites you to swim in clear freshwater while listening to waves crash on nearby Boom Beach — one of Isle au Haut’s hidden treasures.
Acadia’s Isle au Haut section offers 18 miles of hiking trails, including Cliff Trail, Goat Trail, and Duck Harbor Mountain, where forested ridges open to spectacular ocean views. The island remains one of the quietest corners of Maine’s coast — an extraordinary place for solitude, exploration, and reflection.
⸻
Island Life
Isle au Haut is remote and peaceful, accessible only by daily mailboat ferry from Stonington or by private boat. Guests cannot bring cars to the island; however, during your stay you’ll have use of a vehicle provided free of charge, allowing you to explore the island’s loop road and trailheads at your leisure. We also have ten bikes available for your use when exploring the island.
If arriving by ferry, please review the mailboat schedule carefully when planning your trip. Alternatively, guests with private boats may use The Fogline’s private mooring in Head Harbor.
The island community includes a small grocery store, post office, school, and seasonal food truck, all within reach. Acadia’s protected landscapes begin just beyond the property line.
