Levanto, a town of pre-Romanesque origins, lies at the northern end of the seductive villages of the Cinque Terre. The name Levanto derives from the medieval Latin levantem, oriente, meaning 'place to the east of Genoa'. The town of Levanto has an interesting historical centre, many beautiful painted villas, a lively Wednesday market, good restaurants and shops. In the main square, Piazza della Loggia, there is a delightful 13th-century loggia. Levanto boasts a particularly mild climate. The long sandy beach is ideal for all bathing activities. It is an excellent base for surfers, who come from all parts of Europe. Also on the beach, there is a swimming pool and a diving centre. In summer, there are many concerts and live music events. Genoa, Pisa, Lucca and Florence can easily be visited in a day, by train or car. Levanto is close to the airports of Genoa (60 km) and Pisa (70 km).
