Wonderful home!

We again enjoyed our stay at the Canal House. The location and beach passes are perfect. The weather wasn't the best, but plenty of space to spread out and relax. My favorite space is the screened in porch. We will be back next year! The new master bathroom was a great addition. Thanks for another relaxing week at the beach. Our happy place!

Another amazing week at Canal House!

This is our 3rd year staying at Canal House. We like it better every year. So much to do either the canal out back, the proximity to the beach and all the fun things to do in the area! Thanks Jane! We will be back next year!!

Great Place to Stay

Loved being on the canal. Lots of room to spread out with lots of books and games and even a piano to enjoy. Only one complaint, while having all the kitchen amenities was nice , having one empty cabinet to store food brought from home would have made it the kitchen/dining area feel less cluttered. Thanks!

Family time

The home was a perfect location to reconnect with our kids and their significant others. Loved the set up of the home, the bedrooms and multiple living spaces easily allowed 11 of us to be together comfortably. The canal location offered us a perfect opportunities and balance for non-beach activities. The joy of being together!

Off Season Stay

We had a great time. The house was well equip and had plenty of living areas. It was great to have access to bikes and beach chairs as well as extra blankets and pillows. Plenty of space for a large group. Easy walk to the beach (less than 10 min)! Thanks for making our fall pandemic get-away a wonderful experience.

Spacious and convenient

Great location in South Bethany. We were blown away by how big it is compared to many original South Bethany homes -- it could easily fit 2 families. Lovely space out back by the canal that is always shaded. Having bikes to use was a lifesaver when one of our tires ruptured. I would definitely recommend this place and stay here again.

Another great week

This was our second visit to this property. Again, we had a great time. The house is fully equipped and the owner is very responsive for any issues that come up. It's great having the canal out back for crabbing and fishing. The house has lots of space to gather as a family or to find a quiet spot if you want some time alone.

Beautiful and relaxing family home

The Canal House was the perfect place for our family over Easter weekend. We have adult children and a new grandbaby so it fit our needs perfectly. We enjoyed the quietness of it and the beautiful canal view. The layout inside was also great for us. I wish we had more time to enjoy all of the outside sitting areas and decks. It would be great if there was an outside fire-pit, as the spring evenings are cooler, but we had no complaints. We loved it here and plan to be back next Easter wkd!! Fun Vacation at the Canal House

We had a great time staying the The Canal House. There was plenty of room for the family ( 7 all together). The house is well stocked with dishes, cups, pots, pans, books & games. The brand new kitchen appliances are a nice addition. We enjoyed the eclectic combination of furnishings & décor. Thank goodness for the central a/c as it was very hot during our time there. We added 2 jigsaw puzzles to the collection! My 2 year old grandson loved the Arcades & Funland amusement park rides on the Rehoboth Beach Boardwalk. Our first rental experience was certainly a positive one! Thank you!

Fall at Beach

Very nice layout for our group 6 week old to sixties. Lots of lounge spots if you want some private time. Screened in porch off of family room and open deck on top floor were well used and enjoyed. Recommend updating master bedroom bed and making it a king if it fits, it would also help to update master bath vanity and toilet. I am 6’3” and it was a long way down. Above paragraph was a wishlist. Everything worked fine and there were lots of extras, crabbing equipment, nice Weber gas grill and Weber charcoal grill if that was your choice, tons of cutlery and plates. Hosts were very nice and attentive. We stayed for 10 nights and barely saw the sun and still had a wonderful time. Would definitely return!

Perfect Bethany Beach Canal House

We were thrilled with our stay at Canal House. It has "all of the things" and none of the fuss. A simple beach house, that provides exactly what you need for an easy week at the beach. Very well stocked with kitchen items, utensils and cookware, plenty of beach items (chairs, boards, coolers, etc.), and even bikes to use. The owners truly do make it feel like they have opened up their own home... it's not just an empty rental. It was fun to sit down at the piano for a minute or two, and play a few notes while passing through the main level. There was plenty of room to spread out inside, and the outdoor space was perfect for the little ones to catch tadpoles and crabs with their net, and multiple seating areas allowed us to eat outside easily even with 11 people. Only a half mile walk to the beach! Exactly as advertised and expected!

Great location - house smells of creosote - twin beds loud /creaky - entry level tile very slippery

We don't let issues with our lodging ruin our vacation, so we had a great vacation. However, I CANNOT recommend this house due to the strong smell -- particularly in the basement and other major issues. Here's a list of pros / cons. Read on for the full story. PROS: BEAUTIFUL screened porch LOVELY back yard on the canal Good kitchen layout/appliances Two fridges! Easy access to beach and bay - 3 bikes included CONS: Creosote / musty smell made basement unusable and permeated the house Twin beds were so creaky they kept kids awake all night Visible mold on air conditioning vents Tiles of basement and bathrooms so slippery when wet - dangerous Very few windows have screens No curtains in bedrooms - VERY BRIGHT in morning When we arrived, we notified the manager - Phyllis of three issues - 1) The strong musty / off smell in the house. 2) The twin beds were extremely loud and creaky - when the kids rolled over during the first night - I could hear it in the bedroom across the hall - and it sounded like someone was dragging a kayak through stones. I mean, I'd never heard a bed make that noise. 3) Three of the 5 ceiling fans did not work - including the one on the screened porch. Phyllis and her husband were incredibly responsive and came over almost immediately. They fixed the fans, checked out the beds and acknowledged the problem and identified that the issue was the box springs. She also acknowledged the smell was an issue. Later, she let us know that the OWNER informed her that the smell was creosote (look it up) and there was nothing to be done about it. She told us also that the beds were something that would be addressed, but not during our stay (?!?!). We took action on the beds - removed the box springs out of the beds and leaned them against the wall. There were just enough slats on bed frame to hold up the mattresses. Problem solved. We had some lovely days in the 70s, so tried to open up the windows to air out the house a little, but very few of the windows had screens in them, so leaving the windows open was not really an option, which is unfortunate in a beach house with such a nice breeze. In addition, when we arrived at check in time, the cleaning crew was there. They told us they were not going to mop the basement because when it is wet, it is incredibly slippery. We found this to be the case - which is problematic when people come in after rinsing off just outside with wet feet. Too many issues to recommend

The house was great for us to enjoy a vacation with our adult children and grandchildren. There are lots of books, toys, games, and gear for kids. We appreciated the well-equipped kitchen and large capacity washer & dryer. We spent a lot of time on the screened porch and lower deck overlooking the canal. It is a quiet neighborhood great for safe bike riding & jogging. Location is an easy walk to the beach. The only disappointment is that we never found the advertised kayaks.

We were a three generation family with an age range from 75 to 5 years old. The house was well equipped and met all our needs perfectly. The house space provided plenty of opportunities to hang out together or find a nice private area for relaxing. The owners (Jane) were very responsive to our questions. We loved the screened in porch, the porch swing and overlooking the canal. We took advantage of the provided beach passes to South Bethany Beach less than a 5 min. drive. We love this area.

Excellent stay

We really enjoyed our stay at the Canal House. The house is comfortable and well appointed, and we love the shade provided by trees in the yard. We took advantage of being on the canal by bringing our crabbing boat (and snagged close to a bushel out in the Bay), and doing some kayaking along the local canals and creeks. Saw lots of birds along the way. Thank you, Butlers!

Dirty, stinky, garage sale

The house is dirty, moldy and smells like cat pee. Very old rickty. All amenities like beach toys and bikes were broken or not working. There was meat blood in the poorly cleaned fridge, mold on all shower curtains, no reasonable to use pans, no furniture was moved and cleaned behind or under. Very disappointing for the cost.

Summer Family Vacay

The House was the perfect size lots of room for the children to play and ride bikes outside and a safe place. Having the three separate living, Spaces was perfect. Distance to the beach was great and the house was more than adequately equipped for everything we could’ve needed.

Perfect Vacation Home

The Canal House is an absolute must stay. It is a short distance to the beach and MANY other attractions. We love the screened porch and seating area out back of the house. The owners care about their property. The updated master bathroom was terrific. We LOVE the Canal House!

This house has been in our family since 1999 when Jane's parent's purchased it to use as a rental property. Although from the Hudson Valley of New York the family has vacationed on the Delmarva Peninsula for years. Because of our longstanding interest in the area Jane's in-laws started renting properties here too, and now a contingent of over twenty cousins, siblings and other family and friends convene once a year. One sister-in-law has had Pasta Night followed by board games and cards games at her nearby rental for over 30 years. And trivia night, Mexican night and more continue to be family traditions for us all. The house is our center of fun and we welcome and encourage others to use it similarly to strengthen the bonds of family. My two rules for this house are that I must go to the beach every day, and I must play the piano every day.

This house is so comfortable to be in with its breezy atmosphere and multiple porches. There is a nook for everyone to enjoy. It is a great house for families and for kids.

Vad som gör detta boende unikt

The canal is tough to beat with the opportunities for crabbing, fishing and launching of a small craft. It is a pleasure to simply sit out there and read a book. The screen-in porch gets the most attention it seems since it overlooks the canal and draws folks for breakfast, lunch, dinner, reading, games, crafts, you name it. It is a lovely spot to sit. That porch swing downstairs is pretty terrific also. And besides the pleasure of the bay and the quiet community we can just as easily walk to the ocean and enjoy the thrill of the beach and the water. We get the best of both worlds at this house.
