We wondered why this property was very nearly the last one to rent over Thanksgiving. We found out. We've been coming to Nags Head since the 1960s and have stayed in dozens of beach houses in that time. This one costs about as much as most of the ocean-side places we've rented, but it's much smaller and the views just aren't worth the price. The kitchen is tiny, there's no service bar and if you lean back from the dining table you'll burn the back of your head on the stove. There are no shades or curtains for the huge windows in the not-quite-great room, so you'd better plan on dressing for breakfast. During the day the light pouring in through those windows makes TV watching almost impossible. Rooms run from small to tiny. The very soft beds are fine--if you don't have back issues. The living room could use more light, especially since one of the lamps was broken.
On the other hand, the appliances are first rate and the TV options, once you figure out the controls, are quite good. It has most of what you'd expect in a beach house (but really, no whisk in the kitchen?). The provided soap, TP, and tissues are a nice touch. The décor is above average, highlighted by an enormous swordfish suspended over the big windows.
We stayed in November, but in summer and when an ocean breeze keeps the mosquitos back towards the sound, there's a good deck with a picnic table and, from parts of it, a bit of an ocean view. They keep the wooden railings well sanded-- you'd have to work to get a splinter, and that's often not the case on the OBX.
You can get more room and better views on the land side of the beach road, but if you have small children and are worried about crossing the road with them, you may find the sacrifice of the extra bucks, small quarters, and rare views of...the cottages that surround you, worth it. Also, many of the better places rent only by the week on a rigid Sat to Sat or Sun to Sun schedule. Vrbo gives you flexibility in when you move in and leave and how long you stay that the realtor/rental offices rarely can match.
