Thanks for the kind comments, Brad. You definitely will be welcome back again. It is our goal to make our guests want to return, so we do our best to provide what they need to make them happy!

We use the philosophy, "the customer is always right", so refunded these guests for the nights they did not stay. But when we checked the cottage after they left, we did not see most of the problems they mentioned. Before and after their stay, we did not see the "mouse droppings" they claimed, and as owner I was personally there before and after their stay. Because our cottage is in secluded woods, there are some spider webs and the outside windows get dirty easily from nighttime bugs that are attracted to the lights, we admit that, but that's normal for a wooded area. We checked the area around the septic tank, actually got down to ground level to sniff for odors, and did not smell anything at all. We tried all the sinks, toilets and drains, and everything worked fine with no "gurgling or odors". We had the septic tank pumped about a week before these guests arrived, so it was in good shape. Maybe these guests could smell the septic truck had recently pumped the system, but we could not smell anything at all, and no other guests mentioned that problem. We did detect a minor "smoke" odor around our indoor fireplace, but no "dust or mouse odor", so maybe these guests were simply highly sensitive and needed an air purifier? We also disagree that our dock is "unstable and unsafe". It is older, but built with heavy 2"x6" treads with steel braces underneath, and we have never had anybody get hurt on it. If kids were horsing around on the dock, they could fall into the water, but the lake is not deep around our dock, with a sandy bottom and no dropoffs, so not a drowning hazard. Our average review is 9.4 at the time of this writing, and nobody else has been so dissatisfied, so we feel this is just a case of somebody with unrealistic expectations. Nonetheless, we take all reviews seriously and use them to improve our property for future guests.
