Escape from reality!

spacious comfort

our family of 10, from ages 15 to 80, had such a pleasant week at Brookwood house. Unfortunately, it rained every day. however, we usually found some time to be able to use the lovely pool. The accommodations were very spacious for all of us to be together in one room or we could find plenty of areas for some quiet alone time as well. It is a beautiful house with a most interesting decor.

We had a great time at the Beautiful Brookwood Estate. We had 4 under 5 and they all had a great time the pool and creek were wonderful. There are a lot of things to do around Roanoke with littles and we thoroughly enjoyed the trip !!

Beautiful and relaxing hide away

Just outside the city and minutes from everything there is a gem of a home. It’s tucked into the mountains and sitting along a beautiful bold creek. We had family in town visiting and booked Brookwood and we were in no way disappointed. Beautiful home, beautiful setting and an excellent host. 10/10 recommended!!!

Just Lovely

The Brookwood House offers my family and me an almost magical experience. This marks our third consecutive year visiting Brookwood. The setting itself is unique, surrounded by nature that “sings” to us songs from the babbling brook and birds, and occasional bullfrog. The large pool offers plenty of built-in fun for my family, and this week my five-year-old granddaughter even added “swimmer” to her growing set of skills, a particular delight to our bank of family Brookwood memories! The structure itself has plenty of space, allowing us family gatherings, as well as “step-away” moments for personal rest and recharging. The house has a “home-like” sensation for my family that is an additional asset to this vacation jewel, and the outdoor spaces, including two porches with swings, allow my adult kids and me, a combination of city-dwellers and suburbanites, to embrace God’s gifts from nature fully. We enjoy this place where thoughtful architecture engages natural beauty, and highly recommend Brookwood House.

Beautiful Escape!

What an absolutely amazing vacation house! The house was stunning, with unique architecture and quirks. We loved exploring all of the different rooms and the artwork hung about. The house offered plenty of space for our families to gather together and even allowed us to all sit together for dinners at the large dining table. The kitchen was fully stocked with various cooking utensils and baking items as well as spices and cooking oils. The pantry also had an array of items you may need from batteries to first aid kits. The covered patio off the dining room was a great place to relax and listen to the creek flow…and watch the occasional thunderstorm roll in! By far the best part of the property was the extremely large pool-it was not only beautifully maintained but provided us all space to float and the kids to play at the same time! It was so awesome to hear the creek and be able to be in nature while cooling off! Lastly, but not least, Natalie, the caretaker, was such a joy! While admittedly we thought it was a bit strange to have someone on property, after meeting her, those thoughts went away. She was incredibly kind and sweet. She answered our few questions we had and asked us before she came over to check a breaker. She truly was wonderful! With the exception of her fixing the breaker per our request, we barely saw her and had our privacy. We’ll certainly be back!

My Husband’s 70th Birthday Celebration

We chose The Brookwood House as the Mecca for a special celebration for my sweet husband’s 70th birthday! The architecturally interesting house, the expansive pool and cabana area, and the very private Creekside location provided the perfect backdrop for our festivities. We had a wonderful time with our kids, our sons-in-law, and our grandchildren from Sunday to Wednesday early afternoon. Then the rest of the time through early Sunday morning, the two of us leisurely explored the area on our own. We enjoyed the Pinball Museum in Roanoke with our sons before they left as well as Market Square downtown. We also meandered through a lovely part of Skyline Drive, and did a forty five minute drive to have lunch at the Los Amigos Marina on part of Smith Mountain Lake. Gorgeous area. Don’t miss the Mellow Mushroom in Roanoke for a great Greek Salad or pizza, Scratch Biscuits for Breakfast, the Outback for a delectable and very reasonable filet mignon, and Katie’s Ice Cream for dessert. The whole family enjoyed the huge swimming pool, and the “resident” card and board games came in handy at night. One son-in-law and teen grandson really enjoyed fishing along Crystal Creek. We could watch them from the outdoor screened porch or in the seating cluster by the upstairs family room window where we assembled most often. Last but not least, we loved the Master Suite; the view is truly mesmerizing. Thank you to Natalie for being so accommodating and responsive the few times we had questions.

Magical Vacation

Our adult children and their families all came at various points during the week to stay at Brookwood with us. From the moment we entered the door we were enchanted by the beauty ,artistry, and thoughtfully designed spaces for quiet and for connection. From the air hockey table to the 'secret room', to exploring the creek- our grandchildren were inspired and hooked! The adults loved the books, stereo system, ambiance, art, and the vision of Brookwood. The beds were super comfortable, and the kitchen had everything we needed and more.

Brookwood House June 4th-11th 2023

The property was very beautiful! We had a wonderful time and hope to come back someday. It was just 3 adults and 1 kid, we were supposed to have more people, but they had a medical emergency to tend to so we had a huge home all to ourselves! We have relatives in the area so we had them over a couple times for swimming and dining. Don't hesitate and book this place, you will not regret it! If i could give it 100 stars, their is no question that I would.

Girls Vacation

Property was as listed. Very large and decorated with much art. Enjoyed noticing something new everyday. We looked up the history of the property and thought it would be nice for the owners to have this available for visitors to read. Not convenient for cooking out at the pool and no table and chairs around the pool. There are lounge chairs and wicker chairs around the pool. Home is beautiful and very peaceful environment.

2nd year here- love this house!

This house is so relaxing, so comfortable, so warm and comforting. Love everything about it. Our family had a wonderful time! Because it’s fragrance free, they do provide detergent if you plan to do laundry- but heads up that they require you to only use the washer and dryer on clothes that haven’t been previously washed with fragranced detergent. Just a heads up for planning ahead. Lots of board games and towels, but only had two jigsaw puzzles - so definitely bring your own. We wish the fridge by the pool worked so we could put drinks in during the week. Having the pool house bathroom and shower is awesome. We love this house!

Exceptional Experience

The property was amazing and every need we had was met by the caretaker. I was most impressed with the cleanliness of the house, especially the appliances. The refrigerator was spotless. The pool is larger than most and features lots of places to lounge and sunbath. The secret playroom was a big hit with our 2 little ones; they loved the vintage view finders and other toys! There is plenty of seating to gather on the main level and lots of privacy with the bedrooms being spread out over 3 floors. There is a caretaker who lives in the bottom studio apartment that was not disclosed to us until 2 days before our stay. The studio does not appear to have sound proofing, as we could hear soft music coming from the apartment, so I am assuming we could be heard when we were playing games on the bottom floor. This posed no issue for our stay, but if you want complete privacy that may be a consideration. Over all, one of the best properties we have experienced. Ohio Guests

Peaceful Family Fun

Our family gathered for the second time at this unique location. The setting makes it a delight for any that love “the woods,” with a babbling brook nearby, songbirds serenading, AND a fun pool too! Two granddaughters learned to dive this week, and all had fun. The “secret room” is a treasure for our young grandson. It’s a lovely place in a beautiful area of our country. We hope to return to Brookwood House for our next family gathering.

Mountain Solitude.

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at this well appointed cabin beside a babbling brook outside of Roanoke, VA. The rooms are thoughtfully decorated, and there are multiple locations to stretch out and relax and listen to the sounds of nature. There is a beautiful pool. We thoroughly enjoyed our time here.

Nice large space

We were so happy to find a place in the area that could accommodate all 10 of us with room to spare! We enjoyed cooking Thanksgiving dinner, relaxing, walking along the creek, reading, listening to music and playing board games with our friends and kids. It’s a shame that it was too cold for the pool, it looks awesome. The owners and the house manager were quick to respond to questions and very helpful. We hope to visit again sometime.

Wonderful!

An incredible relaxing and beautiful environment. It is hard to think of how I'd improve the location for a family gathering. We truly enjoyed the home, the amenities, and the hospitality provided by the guest manager. Fantastic! We prepared all of our own meals over the course of 4 days, and use of the kitchen space and all of the available supplies was wonderful. If you forgot to bring something for the kitchen, rest assured because there are likely extras in their pantry. There was plenty of room and sections of the home for a large gathering that also enabled private conversations and groupings, creating a wonderfully intimate and comfortable setting for catching-up with family after long periods away, and also finding time alone or with your partner. The whole place begs you to return to experience it during all four seasons.

Tranquil Retreat

We very much enjoyed our stay at Brookwood. There was so much to enjoy from the beautiful weather, the porch, the creek and all of the beauty that make Brookwood a home. My family and I booked the house for our daughters wedding at Sundara. It was close to the venue! The house was a great place to catch up with family and breathe. The ONLY negative that I would say is that the caretaker is a smoker and with the home being fragrance free requirement we could smell him smoking in many rooms. With the beautiful weather we opened the windows and sat outside, the smoking didn't make the visit the best. We will recommend the house to others and will plan another visit ourselves.

We had a very enjoyable time everything we needed was there and David (Caretaker)is fantastic. Lots of stairs and if older like us seniors it was difficult going down and back up from the pool. But otherwise we had a great time.

Unforgettable, unimaginable and unbelievable.

My overall impression of the property is 5 stars, but every other review spells that out. Brookwood is EXCELLENT. For a twist, let me tell you about the time we had. Unforgettable - Covid-19 postponed reunion plans THREE times. When I booked this property, my 93 & 94 year old parents were in lock-down at their assisted living facility. For seven months we talked about travel plans, Brookwood photos, menu possibilities, creative play ideas and great grandchildren they hadn't yet met. Those conversations gave them something to hope for and look forward to. We were all vaccinated and wore masks 100% of the time for a MONTH, so we could take them off when we were together. I will never forget how our dreams gave them hope. Unimaginable -- After 2020 it was even more important that we gather to celebrate the joy of family, the miracle of survival and the gift of longevity. 29 of us came from Virginia, North Carolina, Tennessee, Colorado & Minnesota. The parents & children (in our 60s & 70s) stayed at Brookwood - 8 of us. The grand children & great grandchildren - 21 of them - stayed at 5 other sites in Roanoke -- other VRBO properties & hotels. We gathered at Brookwood in groups to explore the creek, splash in the pool, play games and share dinners. We made banana splits and the six 4 - 10 year olds put on a talent show. The great aunt who keeps bees brought a frame of filled honeycomb and we all got sticky on the porch filling jars and licking our fingers. We explored the Blue Ridge Parkway and stood under the Roanoke Star. We created our own "flash mob" singing "Dona Nobis Pacem" in rounds because my Dad said during the lockdown that he wanted to hear it sung by the family one more time. WE DIDN'T COOK ONCE! Local eateries (suggested by David) delivered! Can you imagine? Unbelievable - Some of us hadn't met the 1, 3 & 4 year olds. Many of us hadn't seen each other in several years and most of us not since we lost the oldest son to cancer last year. That we could pull this off and keep everyone -- from 1 to 94 -- safe was unbelievable. Thank you to Adam & David for allowing us to use Brookwood in this unconventional way -- for a family reunion that was unforgettable, unimaginable and unbelievable.

An absolutely relaxing vacation— with KIDS!

We had an amazing stay at the Brookwood. As everyone else has said, the millipedes were there and the WiFi/ Verizon cell service wasn’t great- but the library is new and close, and does have great WiFi. Otherwise, this is the nicest VRBO we’ve ever stayed in. The pool is so nice, the kitchen is well equipped, the beds are comfy, and the house is a total gem. Trips with kids aren’t always relaxing, but this was. There’s a bathroom on every floor, and there’s a master bed/bath on the main floor. The pool has some noodles and toys, and the creek/trees is the perfect backdrop. We didn’t really leave the place all week and didn’t need to. The pool is cleaned frequently by the people who live in the basement, they’re so nice and won’t bother you at all. My only suggestions: It’s a very eco friendly house, so there isn’t much in terms of plasticware, but you can’t bring glass down by the pool. Bring your own plastic cups — they do have plastic plates, but they’re not microwave safe. For our kids, the house is great, and well stocked with toys and spaces for them to play, but there isn’t a high chair or a pack n play, so make sure to bring your own. We had a clip on to the table one that worked with the dining room table on the porch by the kitchen, but if you’re thinking about bringing one, it won’t fit on the dining room table inside (no biggie, since those things get super dirty anyway, I don’t fault them for not keeping one in the house). A second fridge for drinks closer to the pool would also be great, especially if you’re planning to have more than 6 people stay at the house for a week, but it was big enough for 6 of us— and we just brought down drinks to the pool. The front driveway is private and large enough for a toddler to bike around in. Overall, this was the most relaxing vacation we could have asked for, and we’ll be coming back as soon as we can!

Brookwood House is owner operated with a team of professionals who truly enjoy hosting guests from all over while you create memorable experiences.
I the owner, Adam am an architect, builder, sculptor and energy geek. In 1984 I moved to Floyd County,Virginia, where I designed and built in the Roanoke, Floyd and New River Valley area. I was co-owner of Structures Design/Build until I sold it several years ago. I have designed and built hundreds of homes for other folks. Brookwood is the fourth home I designed and built with my wife and life partner, Elizabeth.

The feeling we were striving for at Brookwood is one of relaxation, comfort and safety.
At the time we built I had 40+ employees and was working 7 days a week with no vacations,
I designed and built Brookwood to be a refuge and healing space. When I got home, I
wanted “instant calm and comfort”. We have certainly found the Brookwood “aura” to be this way. In the last 10 years, I have become a leader in the international Passivhaus movement, which is a cutting-edge technology for low energy high performance buildings.

The knowledge I have is now being sought after all over the world. This has led my wife and to relocate to Toronto, where I am acting as an educator for a Canadian Non-Profit promoting Passivhaus on the national level. I was also chosen for a 3-year Edmund Hillary Fellowship in 2018 in New Zealand as a Global Impact Entrepreneur and have just been awarded a permanent designation as an Edmund Hillary Fellow. So, Elizabeth and I have chosen to share Brookwood with others, so Welcome to Brookwood!
