  • An Experience That Will Stay With You Forever

"I had such a memorable time at the Sunset House; it was such an enjoyable experience. The Sunset House is in a prime location between the West End and the West Bay, making access to fun activities a breeze. The house has so many fun and thoughtful amenities that it truly reflects the manager's mindfulness in making certain that guests are beyond satisfied. Subtleties that may go unnoticed, like having staff--who I must mention are kind, thoughtful, and very helpful--constantly rake/turn over sand and spraying plants to keep unwanted pests away made our time at the home extremely comfortable. Other things, such as paddle boards, kayaks, snorkeling gear, ping pong table, hammocks (ohh how I loved the hammocks and their location on the property), a Bluetooth speaker to blast music while swimming at the dock, night lights under the dock to see beautiful sea life... the list goes on! Wake up, grab some breakfast, then a kayak with some snorkeling gear, paddle out about 100 yards (no joke!), and snorkel the coral reef and its lovely creatures that will literally have you in a state of awe--it's like Finding Nemo all over again! If that's too far, there are lively creatures to see right off the dock--sting rays, small jellyfish, numerous kinds of exotic fish. I decided to go for my PADI certification on the island where one of the most beautiful scuba locations I went to was right in front of the Sunset House!! Sea turtles, sting rays, magnificent coral, and uncountable variety of fish! Want some fresh lion fish tacos? Walk on the dock and get water taxi that will take you to the West End. Or head out to the West Bay to have some Monkey Lalas (a unique island drink that's all over the island) with my all time favorite fresh sea bass fish and chips (I'd get the fish and fish it's so damn good). All in all, the manager's/owner's effort that goes into this place is palpable and made my experience priceless--thank you!"

  • This is the best house, you can stop looking now.

"A little background on the group that went. We were in our late 20's and 30's, rented the main house and boathouse for a month so we had a lot of time to spend on the property. 5 of us were there for the month, and at times there were up to 10 of us. Even with 10 there, everyone had enough space to not feel crowded. Also Paul is a great home-owner and is always an email away. From the moment you get off the plane, Franklin is there to greet you and your mind forgets about whatever it was thinking about and tunes into island time. The trip to the house is filled with a nice tour given by Franklin himself telling you all about Roatan and answering your questions before you even think to answer them. Upon arriving to the house, we were blown away not only by the beautiful bay, which is right at your feet, but the build quality of the house is the best i've ever seen on an island, anywhere! The boat house was also amazing seeing how it was built right on stilts above the bay. The kayaks, which we used almost everyday, were a lot of fun and you are able to kayak about 100 yards and tie them up to a post so you can snorkel your own private reef. We were always the only ones snorkeling at any given time. Its so quiet and peaceful. So beyond the immaculate house, and amazing water you, Franklin was the best part of the whole trip. He made you feel comfortable and assured you that anything you need he can do. His knowledge of the house, the island, and the people who live there is second to none. Everywhere we went he knew people! He really takes the trip and makes it special. He was there for everything we needed and we left with a new friend who might be the biggest reason for coming back. Overall, Sea-Grove Retreat lived up to and beyond expectations. Do yourself a favor, and book yourself a stay here."

  • Excellent place to stay on Ambergris Caye

"After reading all of the excellent reviews I chose Athens Gate as the place to stay for our first trip to Belize. Man was that a good call! My wife and I along with another couple stayed in a 2 bedroom/2 bath unit on the 4th floor. No elevator, but the stairs were a good work out. The units are right on the beach, with large living and dining areas and a large master suite. The second bedroom was quite small, but adequate for our group. The lanai overlooking the pool and Caribbean was huge. The staff was very friendly and took care of everything we needed. Special thanks to E for setting up our snorkeling trip (on the Lady Leslie catamaran - a must do excursion if you go to Ambergris Caye) , arranging a golf car rental and cabs for us, and for turning us on to Sushi night at the Blue Water Grill on the beach in San Pedro. Soto, the bar tender (and personal chef) provided the best service ever, especially the lobster, fish and vegetable dinner grilled to perfection. Setting up the reservation and all transfers required to get to Athens Gate was a breeze thanks to Lori. She took care of all the details for us. We took a snorkeling trip with Lady Leslie Tours to the Hol Chan Marine Reserve at the Reef, Shark and Sting Ray Alley and Caye Caulker. Martin Leslie and his sons are excellent hosts, and snorkeling guides. Best boat ride ever and I will do this trip every time I come back to Belize. The restaurant across the street from Athens Gate has good food and you have to try the lobster fajitas. There is a small market a couple of blocks away and larger grocery stores on the south side of San Pedro. I would definitely stay at Athens Gate again and recommend it to friends and family."

  • A Costa Rica Gem...

"We've been grateful to visit many places around the globe, but it's still a thrilling surprise to find a place crafted and decorated with such care and inspiration. The owners are gracious and exceptionally accommodating, the setting is gorgeous, and the villa is nothing less than extraordinary. Yes, a 4X4 is a MUST; but that simply goes with the territory (side road in Costa Rica hills). Easy access to three entirely charming towns. Uvita has a great farmers market, not one but two supermarkets, a great coffee shop/restaurant, and others besides. Ojochal is home to some extraordinary restaurants. And Dominical has some brilliant places to eat and shop at and see. Gorgeous wildlife and countryside all around. We stayed at this Villa hoping to have a wonderful and rejuvenating holiday. It was indeed that; a truly exceptional place and setting."
