  • Wonderful Place!

"If you are looking for a comfortable place to stay while in the very small fishing village of Jiquillio then Casa De Portugales is the place! We loved it here and wished we would have stayed longer. It was great to rent the surfboards for the week so we could just use them when we wanted. The kitchen has everything you will need, its clean, and well appointed. The owners arranged a ride from the airport which also took us to a large grocery store in a nearby town so we could get provisions for the week. I suggest planning your meals ahead of time and make a shopping list. Fresh fruits and vegetables could be purchased off trucks that roll through town every other day or so. Some small things like sweet drinks and junk food can be purchased at nearby stores run out of family homes. We started in the 2 bedroom house (we have 2 teenagers) but switched to the one bedroom. The one bedroom has a great vibe: color scheme, floor to ceiling windows, privacy, a patio with seating....it was really great. The kids slept in the bedroom and my husband and I had the double bed in the living room which was fine. The beds were pretty comfortable. Jiquillio is very small with no public services (trash, water) so be prepared for that! Water is delivered by truck and the caretaker who is always on site takes care of everything and is happy to help. The property is clean but the area itself has a LOT of trash everywhere. There is good food at Rancho Esperanza and descent food at Cafe Pacifico. We arranged a beach horse riding trip and a fishing trip through Bodhi which was really great. The surf was good for beginners with a nice sandy bottom. Spend a day observing the tides to see whats up. My daughter and I had boogie boards which was perfect. Its extremely hot in Jiquillio so plan to have siesta time every afternoon to get through it. Hammocks on the property are lovely and the fans in the house are an absolute necessity. I cant say enough about the beach! We had it practically to ourselves and of course the Pacific sunsets are amazing. To the north is the town and the fishing boats which are very interesting to watch being launched. To the south it is completely undeveloped and goes on for miles. This area of the beach is surprisingly clean! And to the north beyond the town is also quite deserted and clean as well. This house and Jiquillio is definitely a place we would love to go back!"

  • Awesome

"What a fantastic place. Perfectly off the beaten track but not too far from Managua, Pochomil is the perfect getaway spot. Luis was waiting for us at the airport, organised our car hire and drove us to the coast, couldn't have been easier. Luis was a star throughout, nothing was too much trouble and he came surfing with us everyday, showing us new spots when the beach break in front of the house was a little heavy. He also took us for fresh fish and lobster (via his brother) and lovely fruit and vegetables. They were all transported back to Lesbia who would magic them into fresh cerviche or fillets for lunch and dinner. The kids adored Luis and Lesbia and the holiday just wouldn't have been the same without them! Nothing was too much trouble and waking up to fresh coffee, fruit and the sound of waves crashing is exactly how the day should start. The villa itself is perfect, the pool maintained beautifully and a direct walk onto the expansive beach. The broad beach is sandy but with lots of shells to collect and rock pools to explore. Just perfect to wonder along. We will definitely be back."

  • Can't get any better

"The location is great, the rooms are great, the pictures don't do the spaciousness justice. It is bright and very open. A horse back ride on Kieth's ranch should be mandatory-the horses are gentle and sure-footed. Our hosts are gracious and helpful, they treat you like old friends. The staff are great and friendly. The two k. Beach is across the road. The only thingwrongwiththis is my poor Spanish. We are halfway through our two week stay and definitely thinking seriously about returning next year-all eight of us"

  • Relaxing getaway on an awesome beach.

"The property is nicely located on the beach and the Crowsnest accommodation provided the basics I needed for my week long stay in a self-catering unit. It is clear that the design of the space was well thought out and developed with attention to details. Overall the maintenance is good and the place is clean and comfortable. Communication with the owners was very prompt. Staff were helpful with what I needed and otherwise I had the independence & solitude I was looking for. Wifi and body boards were a great added bonus. Would have preferred if the bikes were free to use. The lobster dinner I ordered was good but pricey at 500 cordobas (only 300 elsewhere). My one disappointment was the deck area. It was located at the back of the property and thus did not face the beach. Additionally the deck was useless in the rain because it got wet and worse yet, water collected in the overhead canvas. I got soaked twice and the cleaning lady regularly got wet when trying to drain the collected water. This inability to use the deck during rainy times meant there was no good place to sit and eat. It also meant I ended up sitting inside on my bed to read or watch a movie when it was raining rather than being able to use the awesome deck chairs outside. It seems like this is something that could be easily improved. Yes I would recommend this accommodation but FYI: - If you are planning to self-cater - the grocery situation is poor. The Commisary is mostly empty shelves. Use the pulperias but you will probably have to visit a few to get what you want. I recommend bringing as much as you can with you from the mainland. - Some taxi drivers do not like to go to the end of Long Bay road - 4 drivers turned me down at the airport when I arrived before I got ride. Also, a driver during the week would not drive off the paved road. Granted it's not a really long walk along the beach... just something to be aware of."
