All aboard the Skunk Train! Sorry, what?
If you fancy an excursion, Mendocino Coast Botanical Gardens provide beautifully tended green stuff in a striking coastal setting, with guided walks. Otherwise, the city of Fort Bragg is only a 20-minute drive away, and is famous for 'Glass Beach', where the glass from the former town trash dump has been worn down by the sea into colorful pebbles. Fort Bragg is also the home of the Skunk Train, a quirky heritage railway that takes scenic trips out into the forest. It will delight the kids almost as much as encountering a real skunk, and smells a whole lot better.
Plenty of elbow room on the beach
With this being the North Coast, you're unlikely to be sharing those beaches and ocean views with very many fellow vacationers. Pretty much next door to your Little River vacation rental, Van Damme State Park boasts 1,800 acres of diverse habitat, plus 10 miles of hiking and biking trails with camping options. At the shoreline it becomes a marine park, and kayak tours of its sea caves are a must. And that's not all. Little River even has its own golf course, while the village of Mendocino, just up the coast, has a popular classical music festival every July.
Keeping it all in excellent order
That Pacific coastline tends to keep the weather in Littler River pretty even-tempered. You'll get summers that are dry and warm without being too hot, though you might find yourself blundering around in some of the area's famous sea fog. And a winter vacation isn't out of the question either. Winters are generally mild, with the temperature rarely dropping below freezing. Most of the rain is between November and April, and if you spent the rest of your life in your Little River vacation rental, you wouldn't see a flake of snow for the remainder of your days.
Join clawed Van Damme
Little River is named after the stream that finds its way into the Pacific Ocean just nearby. The estuary is part of Van Damme State Park (named for a local businessman, rather than 'The Muscles from Brussels' himself) which also boasts an enticing mix of beaches, coves, wetlands, and canyons. The sea caves are a big draw, with the dramatic spitting and splashing of the Little River Blowhole always a crowd-pleaser. The best way to see them is by kayak, with harbor seals and marine birds for company. And maybe even an otter, if you're very lucky.
