Leadville is one of the highest incorporated cities in the United States, with an elevation at 10,152 feet above sea level. At this high elevation, you can expect to have mild and short summers with long, frigid winters. Several feet or more of snow commonly fall in the area throughout the extended winter season as well as in fall and spring months from time to time. Winters may have average highs that do not reach the freezing mark, and summers may have average highs that are in the 60s or 70s on most days of the year. Plan to dress in layers, however, because you can experience drastic temperature changes that are both higher and lower than Leadville's temperatures when you travel up and down the mountain areas in the Rockies.

How to Get There

There is a small airport in Leadville, but most people who travel into the area will take a commercial flight into the Denver International Airport or will drive their own car into the area. From Denver, you can rent a car or take your own car, and you can travel west along Interstate 70 until you reach Copper Mountain. In Copper Mountain, turn south on Highway 91. Travel south on this road until you reach Leadville.
