  • a fabulous week !

"While not inexpensive, it is not "pricey". Collie has included so many amenities that added to our wonderful week: from the 3 boat trips to get all of the food & gear for 15 people (8 adults, 7 children) over to the island & back. The 4 kayakers in our party had excellent safety training from a top notch professional trip leader. We had a very complete orientation from Collie on the ins & outs of living off the grid. We rented his ATV to enable the 77 year old with physical challenges to enjoy her stay - there even were 2 gardens planted with veggies & herbs for the picking. We also rented a small outboard boat that let the fisher-people catch our fill of mackerel, with a 6-hook mackerel jig we had our fill of fish. The 5 stars are very well deserved !"

  • Sweet Pea Cottage

"Comfortable small cottage. Owner was very helpful answering questions. Good value for the money in a quiet neighborhood. It was nice to be able to take our dog with us. We made sure we vacuumed and picked up after her when we were getting ready to leave. The owner was very prompt returning our deposit. Would try to rent the property again if we were returning to stay in the area."

  • Most beautiful spot on the island!

"This was a fabulous home for our vacation. The location was perfect and the views were unsurpassed. We enjoyed sitting on the master bedroom balcony each morning and each evening, watching the boats. There is outdoor seating all over the house, not just off the master bedroom. There is even a sunroom so you can enjoy the view even if it rains. The house was large enough for our family of 5, including 3 adult children. The additional apartment was cleverly designed so it could either be a completely closed off private apartment, with its own entrance and deck, or it can kept open and act as a bedroom that flows with the rest of the house. We were worried that one of our kids would be isolated, but it worked out well. The house included everything from cooking supplies to towels to games. My husband and I are kayakers, so we were especially excited when the owner let us use her kayaks and canoe. Stonington was a perfect little town. It was peaceful with just enough vacation-y things to do, mostly within walking distance. We walked to the area restaurants (Fisherman's Friend was our favorite) and to the local shops, and made quite a few trips to 44 North coffee shop, which we loved so much, we are now ordering the coffee online. If you have to drive anywhere, it is always scenic and pleasurable. We drove out to Bar Harbor one day, about an hour drive, and not only was it a great day trip, the drive there and back was beautiful. There were just a few cons, and these are pretty minor compared to all the pros: First, the owner lived on the premises, which was kind of awkward. Sallie is super sweet and was always very helpful, but it was hard not to feel self-conscious. Neighbors and guests and their children often roamed around the property. The windows were always open (for air) and the yard is small, so we felt pretty exposed at times. The third con is that all the indoor chairs were uncomfortable and the master bedroom bed had springs poking through. Also, both the owner and the neighbor had dogs that ran through the backyard. And although we do like pets, we signed a "no pets on premises" lease, so I didn't expect to see dogs squatting down in the garden. The last con is that there was no cell service inside the house and wi-fi was very weak. These are all very minor things but I thought they were worth mentioning. I would still strongly recommend the Stronghold for a family vacation. It is the most beautiful house and the most perfect spot on the island."

  • Secluded spot on Islesboro

"We -- two couples-- were there only a few days but plan to go back for a longer stay. Two more couples could have joined -- perfect for a large family or even 2 small ones. This secluded spot is an ideal, almost isolated getaway, a few other houses around. The house is right on the shore, close enough to hear the waves lapping. House is comfy, clean, well stocked with whatever you didn't think of. On a secluded road with access to another shore just on the other side. Perfect for shoreline walks, with Maine woods walks also nearby. conveniently close to a small store for necessities. The owners are very nice and helpful. Saw a bald eagle, first in my life."
