  • Most beautiful spot on the island!

"This was a fabulous home for our vacation. The location was perfect and the views were unsurpassed. We enjoyed sitting on the master bedroom balcony each morning and each evening, watching the boats. There is outdoor seating all over the house, not just off the master bedroom. There is even a sunroom so you can enjoy the view even if it rains. The house was large enough for our family of 5, including 3 adult children. The additional apartment was cleverly designed so it could either be a completely closed off private apartment, with its own entrance and deck, or it can kept open and act as a bedroom that flows with the rest of the house. We were worried that one of our kids would be isolated, but it worked out well. The house included everything from cooking supplies to towels to games. My husband and I are kayakers, so we were especially excited when the owner let us use her kayaks and canoe. Stonington was a perfect little town. It was peaceful with just enough vacation-y things to do, mostly within walking distance. We walked to the area restaurants (Fisherman's Friend was our favorite) and to the local shops, and made quite a few trips to 44 North coffee shop, which we loved so much, we are now ordering the coffee online. If you have to drive anywhere, it is always scenic and pleasurable. We drove out to Bar Harbor one day, about an hour drive, and not only was it a great day trip, the drive there and back was beautiful. There were just a few cons, and these are pretty minor compared to all the pros: First, the owner lived on the premises, which was kind of awkward. Sallie is super sweet and was always very helpful, but it was hard not to feel self-conscious. Neighbors and guests and their children often roamed around the property. The windows were always open (for air) and the yard is small, so we felt pretty exposed at times. The third con is that all the indoor chairs were uncomfortable and the master bedroom bed had springs poking through. Also, both the owner and the neighbor had dogs that ran through the backyard. And although we do like pets, we signed a "no pets on premises" lease, so I didn't expect to see dogs squatting down in the garden. The last con is that there was no cell service inside the house and wi-fi was very weak. These are all very minor things but I thought they were worth mentioning. I would still strongly recommend the Stronghold for a family vacation. It is the most beautiful house and the most perfect spot on the island."

  • Perfect base camp in Bass Harbor

"Our second stay at the Ebb Tide with our pooch was as perfect as the first. Such a perfect location on the water in Bass Harbor. The house is wonderful with awesome views of the sunset from the house, patio with a fire ring, or chairs down at the water. It was so nice to have a quiet place to come back too and unwind after a day of exploring the wonderful hiking trails that Acadia National Park offers. Shelly maintains beautiful gardens around the house and has several bird feeders that attract lots of birds. The house is equipped with everything you need to make your stay enjoyable and if you do need something Shelly and Larry are eager to assist. We used the gas grill for half our meals, and enjoyed several local establishments in Southwest Harbor the other nights. Highly recommend "Eat a Pita" and the attached "Island Bar" for an awesome meal. Thurston's Lobster Pound is a 10 minute drive or use the canoe that comes with the house and paddle across the harbor and tie up at their dock to earn those steamers and beer! Many evenings we took a drive along the Seawall with walks at Wonderland Trail, Ship Harbor Nature Trail, and the Bass Harbor Lighthouse. We saw lots of deer each night we did this. The shower includes a floor to ceiling window that looks out onto the harbor - how many times do you get to enjoy a wonderful sunset while showering! There is a sun room off the master bedroom with a day bed that our pooch enjoyed - he could watch all the critters and keep us safe :) The house is very bright with lots of windows, but also in a very private setting. The hiking on Acadia is very similar to the terrain in the White Mountains of NH, just shorter peaks but with views of the ocean. Even though there were 2 or 3 cruise ships in Bar Harbor most days, we met very few people on the trails and had many summits to ourselves. Very enjoyable hiking! For dog lovers - dogs are welcome on most trails, but there is also an off leash dog park over by Seal Harbor where dogs and horses are welcome, but no bikes. It has a 5 mile loop along with other trails and a pond for the pooches to go swimming. Very worth checking it out. We highly recommend a stay at Ebb Tide - already planning a return trip next year."

  • The nicest home we've stayed in since coming to Maine in 30 years. Great Place and owner.

"From the moment we pulled up to the house we knew this was going to be a great stay. Great location, very clean and taken care of. The owner Stan answered all our questions via text and email right away. Found some new restaurants in the area that had just opened up and some we had never been too. The Farmhouse Inn is well worth the trip to Blue Hill, go early or make reservations. They have a MiFi setup that worked very well, had some business to take care of. Looking forward to coming back next year."

  • Heaven and Nature sing along the shore!!

"Looking for privacy and unending Penobscot views? Or access to lobsterman and their fresh catch or a well equipped kitchen and your very own vegetable garden? Or an owner who personally communicates and tends to details? This is THAT place! Easy access to grocery, sand beach, farmer's markets and the best lobster roll around. Plenty of opportunities for hiking, kayaking and day tripping. We were drawn to the area for the landscape and all things quintessentially Maine. And after several trips to Stonington now, we have fallen in love with the art and artists and the artisans behind 44 North Coffee, wood fired Tinder Hearth Bakery and Aragosta. This was a great situation for our family and our curious 2 year old and we so appreciate the owners sharing this gem with us."
