Nov. 2009 review: “The accommodations were perfect and the view was great! I have to say, your property managers were absolutely great. They were there when we arrived and provided a wealth of information about the local area. They assured us they would be available to help for anything. We did have to call on them when we managed to get our car keys wet and got stranded on Green beach. They came out and picked us up! It was very comforting to know that they were around. …” Keith, New Hope, Minnesota

    • VIEQUES IS BEACHES! At the Western end, Punta Arenas is the farthest, and one of the prettiest, with great views of the Big Island. The Rompeolas (breakwater), for serious fishing and spectacular sunsets, is also out that way. The most accessible swimming beaches are in the Sun Bay Balneario. It is just east of Esperanza on the south side of the island and has 3 very different beach experiences, one of which is Media Luna, the best toddler beach on earth!. This vast Parques Nacionales area also has the bioluminescent bay. We recommend going on moonless nights with the BioBay Conservation group's pontoon boat and biologists, or another organized group. Many deserted beaches are on the East end Fish and Wildlife Refuge. The road to the main beaches is good, but feel free to explore off the beaten path. Other precious experiences are feeding wild horses, losing yourself on long walks through tropical hills and dales, and weekend nights at the NASA...dancing on the strip in Esperanza.

Spectacular Views Await in Casa Mamey - 3BR/3.5BA Villa

Year Purchased: 2010

Why the Owner Chose Villa Borinquen

We own 2 acres adjacent to Casa Mamey for your walking and exploring pleasure. I loved the spectacular views, the wooded gulley, the trees, and the breath taking beauty of it all. We are working on an avocado grove, but with active plantings of papaya, pineapple, mango, and more varieties of fruit that I can name you are welcome to share our passion for living off the land. Hopefully, root vegetables and bean bushes(gandules) are on the way.

The Unique Benefits at this House

Vieques is a gorgeous island off the coast of Puerto Rico. With its clean and empty beaches and its crystal clear waters, it is often called the best kept secret in the Carribean. We are committed to sharing with others the island we fell in love with after seeking uncharted waters 20 years ago. We knew we had found it from the moment we landed on what was then a barren airstrip with only a cargo container for a terminal and a wind sock for flight control.

We strive to capture that bygone quality of Vieques here by guaranteeing guests absolute privacy on the largest remaining private lot in the hills of Villa Borinquen, directly in the tropical trade winds and with a back deck view of the Atlantic Ocean.

You will definitely see wild horses wandering in the neighborhood, so we pray you keep the gate closed or they will eat all our plantings, With no shopping malls, golf courses, or cruise ship ports, the stress will melt away from your body, mind, and soul. Simplicity is the key to the Vieques island experience. Our home is high on a hill in Villa Borinquen, directly above Bastimento Beach. Spectacular views and cool tropical breezes make this location feel private and remote but it is just minutes from a choice of incredible beaches, in town shopping and restaurants, and all that Vieques has to offer.

A
Bastimento Beach, Atlantic Ocean.

Natural Coral breakwater for 100 yards to the left makes this the perfect waveless toddler and wading beach, ending in a treasure trove of beach glass. To the right are miles of Fish and Wildlife Reserve beaches inaccesible by road for endless walking, snorkeling, or kayaking. (North side roads indicated on map are non-existent. See Fish and Wildlife Caribbean Beach Access, below.) Also, check out our BEACH BUNGALOW rental for a cosy private getaway for 2 (of 4 very close friends) right on the water for your next visit to Vieques. it's the second to last house next to Fish and Wildlife. http://www.homeaway.com/vacation-rental/p128536

B
Fish & Wildlife Reserve

Largest land mass in preservation in the entire Carribbean, Follow the road uphill from Casa Mamey and lose yourself on meandering lanes around Vieques' hills for spectacular 360 degree views and tropical glens.

C
Fish and Wildlife Reserve Caribbean Beach Access by Car

Endless beaches, larger ones with picnic tables. The reason people come to Vieques. Get off the beaten track and you can be the first, and only person to lay down new foot prints in the sand that day!

D
Bioluminescent Bay

One of the very few in the Western Hemisphere, the other reason people come to Vieques. Hold off for a moonless night and go with a guided group from Esperanza. ( Our favorite is Bio Bay Conservation, for in-depth ecology tour and walking right off their pontoon boat.) Get ready see the stars on the Southern horizon meet the sparkle of ocean micro life!

E
"Sun Bay" Beaches

Most accessible swimming beaches on the Island. This P.R. National Parkland has the great swimming and walking for all ages. Walk or jog all the way to Esperanza village along the beach, or follow the dirt track by car on to Media Luna (Half Moon) for table flat shallow water on powder sand(There is no better baby/toddler beach experience on Earth!) or Navio Beach for waves and occasional views of passing porpoises.

Owner's Map of Villa Borinquen

As longtime visitors to Vieques (we bought our own cottage in Monte Santo 12 years ago after 6 years of renting) I know exaclty what you want from your brief stay on this unique island. Simplicity, privacy, beach, security, beach glass and being able to walk forever w/o seeing a soul. I am a bilingual psychoanalyst who shares a passion for the land with my painter wife.
Our Spanish speaking, mixed American/Colombian family has lots of local friends that will take good care of you with one phone call. My house manager will pick up/drop off at the airport/ferry, and even stock the fridge. Both of us will make sure your feel right at home while exploring the last safest place to step completely outside of your routine, without needing a passport.

Caribbean Getaway

What an amazingly beautiful place. And what a workout it is to get to the top of the driveway! The house is beautiful and equipped with snorkeling equipment, very nice lounge chairs for the beach, and gorgeous views of the Atlantic, Puerto Rico, and St. Thomas. Walking through the grounds, I found grapefruit, starfruit, and mangos ripe for the picking. Sheets and towels were soft, clean, and comfortable. The kitchen was well equipped with a coffee maker, smoothie maker, microwave, etc. and there was a grill out on the upstairs deck for fresh grilled fish we bought at the market in town. Definitely going back!!

Heaven on Earth

I couldn't ask for more from my stay at Casa Mamey from Christmas to New Years. The house is situated atop a hill, offering breathtaking views of the ocean. It's also a perfect distance between Isabel and Esperanza, Vieques' two major towns. The casa itself is everything you could want from a vacation house - high ceilings, beautiful tiles, terraces, and an airy flow. It begs for the company of small group, as there is space to escape in privacy, as well as areas large enough to comfortable hang out. If you make it to the fish market, you'll find that Casa Mamey is a joy for cooking. Its kitchen is large and stocked, appliances are in top-notch shape, and the barbeque is convenient. Feast on the large dining table for a meal nobody will forget. Lastly, the owner offered impeccable customer service. She helped us organize car and bike rentals, provided a bevvy of information about the island, and was totally on call to make our stay the best possible. Can't wait to return to Casa Mamey!!!!!!

Very comfy, great value

This is a great house, very comfortable, clean and quiet. Awesome to have A/C in all the bedrooms. We stayed for 3 nights with 5 adults and one child. We had plenty of room, and it's nice that each bedroom has its own bath. While it's not super close to the beach, it does have a great ocean view and a nice deck to hang out on. And we spent our time driving around Vieques anyway, stopping at beaches along the way. It was a great value, I would recommend it.

Perfect Set-up for a Family Vacation

Date of Stay: 03/05/11 Review Submitted: 05/02/11

What a wonderful house! At first, I was sceptical about being on an island but not on the beach. Boy was I wrong!!! This wonderful house keeps water views front and center no matter where you are in the house. Fold back and patio doors open up wide to let the sea breezes cool the interior. Each of the three bedrooms has its own bath which is perfect! (The bedrooms are all air-conditioned, but none of us ever felt the need for it) The living , dining area and kitchen occupy one large space which opens onto the terrace for a perfect interior/exterior blend. Great kitchen with everything you need -- including a lobster pot!!! We chose to grill on the terrace almost every night. For breakfast, we picked bananas, grapefruit, berries.... My daughter declared the smoothies we concocted "the best ever!" Great sheets, towels, beach towels, beach chairs and even snorkeling equipment. The owners seemed to have thought of everything! The location was near perfect. We picked up fresh fish in Isabel in the morning , went to a different beach everyday, and had cocktails overlooking the water in Esperanza before heading back for our nightly bbq. Everything was close and easy. We have already booked for next year. I can't imagine going anywhere else. We have found our vacation home away from home! We are already planning our trip back. We have found our family vacation home!
