Below is a list of some of our favorite things to do in and around Hermann. If that is not enough, search the web, you will find something to keep you busy.
HERMANN
Wineries - Hermannhoff Winery and Stone Hill Winery are a short distance from the cottage and five more wineries are a short drive away.
Restaurants - Hermann has a number of casual restaurants as well as fine dining at the Vintage Restaurant at Stone Hill Winery. We recommend the Rivers Edge Restaurant in Fredericksburg MO for fun casual dining and The Cottage Restaurant and Gallery for fresh hand-grafted dishes.
Shops - Many quaint antique and specialty shops line 1st St., 4th St. and Market St.
Biking - The Katy Trail is located just across the Missouri River and a new bridge has been built with a bike lane for direct access. For more serious riders the rolling hills that surround Hermann are favorites.
Museums - Deutschheim State Historic Site and German School Museum are only a few block from the cottage.
Golf - Loutre Shore Country Club is three miles away offering a semi private 9 hole course.
REGION
Fishing - The Missouri and Gasconade Rivers are favorite fishing spot of locals and visitors alike, as are the many lakes dotting the area.
Canoing & Kayaking - The upper and middle Gasconade are some of the best floating areas in Missouri without the crowd of the Maramec. But, if you want the party of the Maramec it is only an hour away.
Hunting - There are plenty of hunting grounds in the area.
Hiking - Many state and national parks surround Hermann.
Wineries - Besides the wineries mentioned above, eleven more are within a short drive. You can spend a couple days traveling the beautiful countryside sampling Missouri's best wines.
More Shops - Just poke around, you will be amazed at what you will find.
DAY TRIPS
Six Flags - Fun for the whole family only is an hour away.
St. Louis - Home of the Gateway Arch, Rams Football, Cardinal Baseball, Blues Hockey, museums, festivals, etc, is only 1 1/2 hour away.
Jefferson City - Our state capital is an hour from Hermann.
Columbia - At just over an hour away is University of Missouri among other things.
Purina Farms - A Small animal farm that is fun event for the whole family.
Rafting - An endless number of fantastic floating rivers cover central and southern Missouri.

I stayed in the Apfelbaum Cottage for four days and loved every minute of it! Not only was it immaculate and charming, it was within easy walking distance to all of Hermann's downtown attractions. The bed was comfortable, the shower was hot, the cottage was well stocked, and the owner was really nice! The house is in a residential neighborhood, and I awoke each morning to a rooster crowing. While you're there, be sure to visit the local bakery for fresh sourdough bread, enjoy homemade chocolates of all sorts at the Chocolate Box, and take a few hours to check out local history at the Deutschheim State Historic Site and the Old German School Museum.Recommended for: Sightseeing, adventure seekers, age 55+, pet owners, romantic getaway.

Perfect for a long weekend getaway! Cute, cozy cottage with a fenced-in yard for the fuzzy family members; perfect for resting between antiquing, hiking, and walking the riverbank. We enjoyed it, loved that it is pet-friendly (too few vacation rentals are!) and would love to visit again sometime!Recommended for: Sightseeing, pet owners, romantic getaway.

The Baileys & McClures enjoyed every minute of our stay & Hermann. We played "pitch" on your kitchen table & sat outdoors on your picnic table with a bottle of wine and solved parenting problems. We always met here because your place was quiet and comfortable.Did you find this review helpful? Yes | No Helpful votes: 0/0

Owner info
Year Purchased: 2007
About the owner: In 2000 my wife and I were hiking in the Mark Twain National Forest when we came upon a bluff and looked out over the Missouri River. Just across the river was a quaint little town looking like it came out of a post card, so we decided to check it out. It was Hermann, and we fell in love. We came back over and over again, visitng at least three times a year always dreaming of living there. Since real life prohibited us from live in Hermann we decided to purchased a small place where we could spend our weekends. In 2007, that idea became the Apfelbaum Cottge. We are very proud of our 2nd home, as quaint as it is, and love to share it (and Hermann) with others. Welcome!
