Cantilevered over stunning rugged coast at Table Cape, north west Tasmania, Australia, The Winged House presents a dramatic art and architectural experience. Designed by award-winning architect Richard Goodwin, the zinc wings seem to lift you and the luxurious 180 degree observatory towards the horizon, with waves breaking on rocks to the east and Rocky Point to the west.

The Winged House has easy access to World Heritage listed - Cradle Mountain's sub-antarctic rain forests, The Tarkine, wild west coast, Cape Grim, Stanley and Dismal Swamp and Rocky Cape National Park with its unique flora. Kayaking, trout fishing, hiking and less challenging short walks are all available in this spectacular island setting which is closer in topography, fauna and flora to Antarctica than the Australian mainland.

Vineyards and wineries, orchards of apples, cherries, pears and olives, crayfish, ocean salmon and ocean trout all contribute to the Ten Days on The Island art, culture and gourmet experience held every two years in March-April.

Why the Owner Chose Table Cape

We chose to build a property that was sympathetic to the rugged coastline, with its sweeping views and magnificent natural heritage of Tasmania

The Unique Benefits at this House

Quoting from the Citation from one of the awards The Winged House has won:"Your first view is of a plane or bird - or maybe a giant silver moth - perched halfway down the giant precipitous slope and poised to take off. As you drive closer it waits; becoming more house than bird. Then you enter and are suspended, not just by the grandeur of the view beneath your feet, but by this moment of arrested flight. You are inside the bird/plane; you feel you really could take off, over the cliffs, sliding through the gently buffering airs rising above the sun-polished sea. Flying off and away - and this feeling is the essence of holiday"

Owner's Map of Table Cape

The land on which The Winged House sits was purchased in 2007. Before beginning building, we spent almost one year clearing parts of the steep block, which was infested with Gorse an introduced pest plant covered in spikes and reaching up to 3m high, Since undertaking the construction of the House, we have gradually revegetated the block with native plants and some exotics. In June 2009, we planted 100 Protea plants down the driveway and 60 small olive trees on one terraced area. Now we are entering an exciting project to try and find bore water under the earth - drilling up to 100m down - with no guarantee of success! If we are fortunate and do find water, we can really go ahead with planting - even putting in some grape vines to take advantage of the Mediterranean-type climate here.

    • WOW! WOW! WOW! The Winged House certainly exceeded all of our expectations. it was our first trip to Tassie, and it proved to be a great decision to stay in Table Cape. The property was fantastic for our 4 children who only wanted to explore the property itself, not the rest of tassie. The house was warm and homely, with all the comforts of a 5 star hotel! even the fridge was stocked for our arrival. we will definitely be back, and would definitely recommend it for a great family holiday, or a romantic getaway. We loved the views, and the peacefulness. But mostly we loved that it was just US and BASS STRAIT.

    • A wonderfully luxurious and relaxing escape for a complete break. The superb interior design and gourmet pantry were a delight to encounter. The dramatic location and views are spectacular and would be enjoyed regardless of the weather. The open fire would make winter as big a treat as the stunning blue sky of summer reflected in the sea. It is the perfect place to bury oneself in a book - there is an extensive library within the house. The fishing rods were used with great success from the rock platform below the house. We have already recommended the house to several friends. Julie and Peter Anderson

    • Our stay at the winged house commenced on 10th January, 2009. That afternoon we looked out to see a large pod of dolphins in front of the house. From the area covered by the pod and the number of breachings I would think there were about 30 dolphins. They were herding salmon into the shore. The next day at breakfast they returned for another feast. It was truly wonderful to see. We found the winged house to be restful and private with marvellous views. It is close to the wilderness areas which we enjoyed. Very special John and Jan Daley

    • Everything that is promised in the advertisement for The Winged House is delivered plus more! This is the most wonderful accommodation. You will lack for nothing. Regardless of the season or the weather the views will be extraordinary. The house is furnished beautifully, the note about generous pantry provisions is an understatement! The owners have thought of every need and catered to it. A wonderful house in a stunning location.
