This property is located just in the middle of Upper Haight and Lower Haight.
Haight Street (Lower)
Now: Less touristy and more low-key than the Upper Haight, this is an eclectic alternative to the Mission, very similar in style. The diverse restaurants, shops and salons cater to residents more than visitors.
Then: Long a cultural annex to the Upper Haight, this area became stylish on its own during the 1990s and the hipster migrations.
How To Get There: From the Church Street or Duboce Park Muni stops, it is an easy walk up Fillmore Street to Haight. You can come the opposite way down Fillmore from Hayes Valley or Alamo Square, or down the slope from Upper Haight Street.
Haight Street (Upper)
Now: Any day of the week, the Upper Haight is filled with a potent mix of locals and tourists. Many shops are geared toward luring visitors with some kind of reflection of the neighborhood's storied past. The carnival-like energy and strong vintage atmosphere comes through everywhere, from the clothing shops to the ornate Victorian architecture.
Then: Once the connection between the dense downtown area and the new Golden Gate Park was bridged by a cable car line in 1883, homes began to be built around Haight Ashbury. Although most of the neighborhood survived the 1906 earthquake and fire, it was a somewhat forlorn area through the first half of the 20th century. The 1960s brought an influx of young people and appreciation for the Haight bloomed.
How To Get There: The N-Judah Muni train passes very close to Upper Haight Street - you can get off at either Carl and Cole, or Carl and Stanyan, and walk four blocks down to Haight Street. The Haight Street buses (6, 7, 71) depart from the end of Haight, two blocks down Market Street from the Van Ness Muni station. If you're driving directly to the Upper Haight, there is an inexpensive parking lot at Stanyan Street, two blocks south of Haight (near Frederick Street).

Happy ending to this story

Since posting the review below, I've had several conversations with the rental agent. He has been extremely concerned and responsive about the problems I outlined in the previous review of this property. The owner will be beginning work immediately on all of the items below, and re-stocking the kitchen, etc. Based on this, I am now changing my review from a 1 to a 5 for future renters. With changes made, I believe you will find a very comfortable, quiet, and extremely convenient apartment. The location on several bus lines with very frequent service near downtown made it a great base to explore the city. The Haight Market a few blocks away is a good place for both basic groceries and prepared food, and the Magnolia Gastropub is enjoyable and affordable. Our college-age daughter thought the shopping at the Haight's boutiques and vintage shops was better than Union Street shops and other touted shopping districts. Like I said, a very responsive agent, and a very happy ending to this story!!

Charming apartment in Haight/Ashbury Neighborhood

This apartment worked out perfectly for our week-long stay in SF (2 adults, 2 teens). The cost of the apartment was probably the same as a nice hotel downtown, but we had more space, we had a washer and dryer and we were able to fix meals here instead of eat out everyday. Two main bus lines (6 and 71) run down Haight all day and evening, so you do not need a car to get to the tourist areas or to a grocery store (Buy a 7-day Muni pass at the airport for around $30 and a bus map for $3 and you will be set!). Parking may be 'free', but having a car is a burden because there is no where to park anywhere within the city. I actually liked not having to worry about a car for the week and the public transportation is amazing in this city. Also, this apartment is walking distance from the Haight/Ashbury corner, Golden Gate park and from Alamo park where the 'painted ladies' victorian houses are. I also liked staying here because it is a couple of miles from all the mass congestion of the tourist areas and you get to see more of the neighborhoods of SF. The owner, Bernat, was always very quick to respond to my emails and we had no problems getting into the apartment when we arrived. My only complaints/"room for improvement" about the apartment would be: The bathroom sink is very slow to drain, 'linens and towels' did not include washclothes, the lock to the main gate is a little fussy, and you can easily blow a fuse if you have too many appliances on at the same time (the electrical panel is right there so you can flip the switch). Other then those few minor things, I would still choose staying here again over a hotel in a heartbeat.
