Owner info

Year Purchased: 2001

About the owner: Built in the 1740's, the house has enchanted us and our friends. When digging the vegetable patch, I found Native American skin scrapers and arrow heads. There have been people living on this hill overlooking the river and flood plain for thousands of years. We have felt blessed to be here. The farm is named for the praying mantis that live here, along with the owls, coyotes, ground hogs, opossum, deer, raccoons and eagles.

Why the Owner Chose Hudson:
Within an easy 2 hour drive of New York City and yet surrounded by true bucolic beauty - this area first drew our attention. As we spent more time here, Columbia county has unfolded with more and more wonderful connections. The lovely, unusual friends and neighbors. The towns of Hudson and Rhinebeck and all they have to offer. Art, unique stores, antiques, a high standard of restaurant foods and a few great wine stores. Then there's the outdoor living that is spectacular ... kayaking on the Hudson, horse back riding, skiing, cycling, fishing and of course swimming. There is roughly 5 acres of fenced in garden around the house that is a treat for any dog to hunt, roam and run.

The Unique Benefits at this House:
The house lends it's self to the season so perfectly. A roaring fireplace in the living room to sit by for screening nights. 'Formal-ish' dining room for the dinner parties. A large claw foot tub to soak in, before friends arrive. A library/den for games or peaceful reading. There is a large outdoor porch with seating areas, and a large table for dinners and parties. You will enjoy the great swimming spots on the creek (the Taconic) that runs through the property, and the woods and fields to explore on the 70 acres. The master bath is adorned with unique tiles that were made by a previous owner; an illustrator for the New Yorker in the 1950's, and done in this style. Fresh organic eggs daily from our own free range chickens and the fully stocked kitchen with twin ovens adds to the bucolic life of quality country living.
