The Owners
That's us... We're Charlie and Dane Hewes. We have a young son and daughter. We were looking for a get-a-way a few years ago and found this place. It's perfect for us. We use it on weekends when it's not rented. The kids like catching pearch/bream off the pier. We're not trying to get rich renting it, just off-setting some expenses. We love our puppies and wouldn't travel without them so we have made this property dog friendly.

The House
It's a cottage-size house. There are 3 bedrooms, 2 baths, a living room, breakfast area, and kitchen with a bar. It is an open floor plan with all tile floors The Master has a queen size bed with attached bath. The second bedroom has a full bed and the third has twin beds. All beds have luxury sheets and bedding. There are tvs in every room. There is another full bath in the hallway. The den/living room connects to a covered porch (30 x 10 feet) on the canal and the other porch is approximately 20 feet x 8 feet. The porches are one in an "L" shape. There is a gate blocking the stairs for children or pets. There are two gorgeous views (from both porches)- one of a bend in the Biloxi River and another of a wooded canal. Both of these porches are raised on pilings approximately 14 feet off the ground. An elevator is being installed on January 23rd, 2012! This makes for a nice view. An elevator is being installed on February 23rd, 2012! The house iss almost new (construction completed fall 2005). Cable and high speed wireless or corded internet are provided. We think it's a great place, and hope you will too.

The Steps and Elevator
Unfortunately there's no handicap access. However, the steps are five feet wide. An outside elevator is being installed in February 2012.

The Neighborhood
The area is known as "Retreat Village". It's a residential area that is close to the city but feels like the country. Adjacent properties are wooded empty lots. Most of the people who live around the lake and the river are full-time residents. There are a few people like us who are weekenders. We really like our neighbors and they've been great to us. The house is only two miles north of Interstate 10, but it feels like you're out in the country - it's surprisingly quiet.

The Biloxi River
The cottage is on a canal off of Richard's Lake, which is directly connected to the Biloxi River. It has 70 feet of bulk head water frontage, and a deck/pier that is approximately 65 feet long ranging from 12 to 18 feet wide. The pier is great for lawn chairs, relaxing, fishing, docking boats(no-wake area), etc.. As mentioned above, there is a great view of main river from the house. We like being on the canal, just off the river, because it has far less boat traffic than the main river. You can dock a fairly large boat at the pier. It's about 4-5 feet deep off the pier. Almost all of the neighbors have a boat- ranging from skiffs, to pontoon boats, to a couple of larger fishing/pleasure boats- one of the neighbors has a 23 footer. Just a few minutes down the river you can dock your boat at a couple of waterin' holes - "Jigg's Fish Camp" and "Daffy's On the River". You can also drive your car to the above mentioned establishments and launch your boat. About 15 to 20 minutes down river you'll find Grasshopper Island (a sand-bar where the locals park their boats and play), the Tchoutacabouffa (pronounced chew-tah-ka-buf) River, and back bay Biloxi (which eventually feeds into the Gulf of Mexico).

Fishing From The Pier
The best tackle is an old fashioned cane pole, with a small hook, and a cricket or worm. Poles are provided in the storage area. In the spring you can catch Bream on most every cast. As the weather gets warmer you can catch a few Blue Gill every now and then. With the right bait, and some luck, you can catch an occasional Bass. When it's really cold you won't have much luck from the pier. Further south, in the "Back Bay" of Biloxi you can catch Speckled Trout and Redfish (to have any luck you'll have to fish from a boat). And of course, in Mississippi's Gulf of Mexico there's some of the best fishing anywhere.

The Floods - THIS PROPERTY WILL FLOOD!
The coast is a great place to live and play; but, as is true in any area next to the water, you have be prepared for tropical storms and hurricanes. During the storms and periods of extreme weather or even during extended periods of rain the river will rise onto the property, which is why the house is raised. The good news is that the weather folks are good at predicting and tracking these storms. The Harrison County Civil Defense puts out warning messages on the TV and on the radio. This shouldn't be a problem for you because you'll want to 'hit the road' as soon you hear of severe weather that causes the Biloxi River to flood. Our policy - if you need to evacuate, or if you're in doubt, just go and we'll work out something reasonable. If it is recommended that you evacuate due to rising water and you do not, we are not responsible for any losses that might be incurred.

The Gulf Coast
There are so many things to do that we could never list them all on this web site. If you want more info, you can do a "google" search for or visit the local Mississippi Coast Chamber of Commerce. The property has easy access to Interstate-10 (2 miles), all casinos, golfing, fishing, beaches (7 miles), shopping, and other attractions. It's an hour drive west to downtown New Orleans, LA or an hour drive East to Mobile, AL. There's a festival of some sort on most weekends.

The No Smoking Policy
Our policy is ABSOLUTELY NO SMOKING IN THE HOUSE. There are plenty of outdoor areas where you can smoke. Smokers are welcome but we require that you not smoke indoors or the upstairs porches (smoke can blow inside). If you smoke indoors you forfeit your deposit. No butts in the yard either please.

We hope you'll come visit!

Quiet Cottage on the Biloxi River
5/5

Wonderful Cottage!

Date of Stay: 11/06/11 Review Submitted: 12/16/11

Your Cottage was amazing! My stay was perfect due to the its warm and comfortable setting. It was impeccably clean and all the little touches (books on the table, couple of ingredients and in the cupboard, coffee, magazines spread out, towels, TV/DVD players, internet access and cable, etc.) that helped make it feel so homelike. The wraparound porch with the river below was amazing and wonderful to enjoy day or night. Canoeing or kayaking would be on the list for my next visit. Although easy to get to and not far from the interstate, the cottage was private and peaceful. Pet friendly was definitely a plus! I simply could not ask for more for a perfect stay. Thank you!
